The only Kilkerran I have is the 12 year old. An extremely well balanced, sweet, lightly smokey whisky with a beautiful vanilla note. It is matured mainly (70%) in ex-bourbon casks, unlike your 8 year old which is matured entirely in re-charred ex-oloroso casks.
Their 8 year ex-bourbon matured expression is also very good. I flip flop between these 2 as my favorite Kilkerran. The 8 bourbon cask matured is wonderfully balanced.
I have only tried the Kilkerran 12 and like it so much I purchased a couple more bottles on line liquor store. I notice today the same bottle I bought has doubled in price since 6 months ago.
Like a few others, my only experience is with the KK 12. While I'm in the minority, I tend to prefer the Kilkerran 12 over some of the pricier Springbank releases (15 year & C.S.) That said, I tend to go to the Glen Scotia 15 & Victoriana even more than the KK 12 when I'm in the mood for Campbeltown. Thanks for the review.
I will be doing a flight fight with the bottles I have in a few months once the temps drop. I'm looking forward to it because I enjoy the bottles I have. Cheers!
Not a peat guy a little I can handle bit of peat but if it’s really peated I just can’t handle those. And I don’t believe I’d become peat blinded ever. I do like me some speyside scotch though I do wish many of the bottles I get would be a higher percentage but those are very rare this one seems to be a hitter. Great review. Enjoy!!
Great Sip of a whisky that! For me I would take the Port over this, Kilkerran is always great. Brilliant indepth review and good luck getting your hands on another one! Cheers
I think this is coming very close to being overly sherried, but I still like it. I have not seen the port in my area, but will certainly be looking out for it. Cheers!
I have yet to try the Kilkerran sherry, sounds delicious! I have a port cask Kilkerran 8 year that is on the verge of tasting like grape brandy. I really enjoy what Kilkerran is doing these days, even if I feel it's a touch expensive.
A new liquor store opened in my area that carries different types of whisk(e)y then Total Wine and More and that's where I found this bottle. AND they did not mark it up like a "local liquor store" would so I'm super happy about that.
I visited the distillery in campbeltown, ended up with a few tasters and Kilkerran 16 year old if i remember correctly. If id know better i would of hit up the sprinbank side and got a bottle...live and learn eh. cheers
@@whiskeyisajourney you need to head to Islay for sure, ive not been yet, had it sorted for my 40th but Covid restrictions put me off, i want the full experience. cheers
Have to agree that Scotch is more of a 'winter whiskey'. Love your enthusiasm, Peter. Been off Scotches lately, but I'm going to pour myself a peated scotch right now!
Nice review Peter! Now I’m really wanting to get my hands on a Kilkerran 8!! The Kilkerran 12 is one of my favorites and I’ve been slowly working my way through a bottle of Kilkerran Heavily Peated Batch 5 which definitely is improved by adding a fair amount of water. Kilkerran is probably my favorite thing out of Campbeltown.
Kilkerran is definitely moving up the ranks with me. I think I have the same batch of the heavily peated...or maybe it's the 6. Not sure, but either way I like it.
Oh man I bet that is a good one. I've been through bottle of their standard 12 and absolutely loved every drop. Gotta put that one on the list. Been leaning away from sherry lately but this one could be an exception. Cheers Peter!
