Collective Records is overcome by emotion at the release of Mercy, the very last recording from the late singer-songwriter Sipokazi Nxumalo, fondly known as SK, who passed away on the 16th August 2021 at the young age of 37. Recorded just four days prior to her sudden passing, this live version, penned by the dynamic and humble songstress, was backed by fellow members of The Jesus Collective during rehearsals for their upcoming debut album, set to release in 2022.
Unquestionably, Mercy was to be the next song released from The Jesus Collective before the close of this difficult year. SK, one of the first members of the evangelical music Ministry was dearly loved and greatly admired by the twenty-three members. Mercy was co-produced by SAMA Winning producer, and singer-songwriter Nqubeko Mbatha and American producer, David "DLO" Outing, known for his work with Gospel greats such as James Fortune and Martha Munizzi.
“This year took and it took and then it took some more. The news drew shock and sadness from the music industry and beyond, but SK is in this song. I am sad, but I will smile when I think of every second that I had the fortune of being in her company. We have lost great musicians, but I believe their music will never die.” says Hilton Petersen, founder of The Jesus Collective and long-time friend of SK. “I can only imagine her excitement if she heard her song airing on radio. SK was so full of life and lived for every moment, and this is a lesson I’m taking from her.”
“SK was one of the most beautiful souls I've ever met. Her heart and her gift that lights the room will never be forgotten by me,” says Khaya Mthethwa, multi award winning singer-songwriter, composer and Idols SA winner.
“We lost a valued member who not only gave her all on the many stages that we shared together, but was also a mentor and a councillor to many of us who, at times, needed spiritual advice and counselling when we were on the brink of giving up.” says Loyiso Bala, fellow member of The Jesus Collective, and multi award-winning singer-songwriter.
In her short but full life, SK had the incredible experience of performing on world famous stages, namely The Sydney Opera House and Carnegie Hall in New York during her time with GRAMMY® award-winning group, The Soweto Gospel Choir, and also spent the past nine years ministering with the Jesus Collective in churches as well as in poverty-stricken areas of Africa.
We extend our support and condolences to all of SK’s loved ones and to her husband Linda Nxumalo and sons, Isaac and Prince.
