The story of Sir John Hotham 'the traitor at the gate' is well told in the city of Hull and being a local I have heard it many times before. However, there is a whole year between Hotham refusing the King entry to the city and his capture and it turns out this is the most interesting part of the story. I don't understand why all the best bits have been discarded over the years.....so I aim to change that. This is a story of plot, intrigue, spying and double crossing that will follow John Hotham and the residents of a nearby town as we discover the events surrounding the start of The English Civil War. I hope you enjoy.
I have shot much of this video from the locations that are mentioned, including from within Sir John Hotham's own house. (Update, turns out this isn't true, but it does lead to another story, one I will tell in good time)
I am looking at another character to follow on the story as the civil war is going to be an area I return to many times over.

Fabulous video, I knew the story of the king being refused entry to hull but to have the story enlarged was great. I have passed comment before regarding the remains of the gate at hull and I believe it would be better covered making a proper museum of it because as your video makes clear this had such a major influence on English history.

Thank you for watching and glad you enjoyed it. They have 'preserved' the remains but I agree, so easy to pass without knowing, in fact it's easy to sit on it without really having a clue. There was an idea to recreate it with lasers a few years back.....I'm not sure how I feel about that 😂

Great work as always! The way you talked about Hotham's deception, and his following escape attempt at Beverley was my favorite part. Your description was so.. vivid, that i could see it happening, like a scene from a movie. Bravo!

Thank you very much and really glad you enjoyed it. This was lovely to read ☺️ It is hard not to get wrapped up in the excitement. The story really drives itself. It was painful how much great stuff needed to be cut. I also have new avenues to explore so I will return to this and it will be bugger and better 😁

Really in depth look at a fascinating part of the region's history! Lots of stuff in there that I didn't know. I really enjoyed the focus on the human stories of the people involved.

Thank you very much. Glad you enjoyed it ☺️ There is so much more to this but I tried to keep the story going at a pace. Cut out some really interesting (other) stuff that happened with bev, they had a real ordeal more than I showed but will find a way to get that out some day. Plus there is a sister story to this but not that far on yet. The events in brid and Scarborough are great too, but I felt it was already a large and unwieldy beast so needed to keep focus.

@@stepthroughhistory It's always the way, I always find so much material that's interesting when I'm researching stuff, and these days I've gotten used to making a note of them on my phone for possible future videos! Look forward to seeing the other stories when they go up!

sounds like a good plan, I am still in file away notes stuffed in semi organised folders. All paper though. One story always leads to two or three more. And despite appearances non of my stories (apart from earlier crap that had a previous non you tube purpose) are stand alone. Though that will only be clear in time so far now I'll just borrow Eric Morecambe's line, 'im playing all the right notes just not necessarily in the right order' 😂

@@stepthroughhistory I realised that I was doing much the same thing, I started with the railways and slowly realised that actually, the REAL story of industrial Hull was about the docks, and the railways plugged into that story. History is rarely a straightforward, easy to tell single story!

It's nice to hear it from someone else who does this kind of thing. I do it largely all on my own and inside a bubble. Your words have been more needed than you may know on a few occasions now. Thank you sir 😁

My family just found out through ancestry that we are direct descendants of Sir John Hotham. This video was very insightful! Fascinating stuff thank you for making it

That's fantastic, I do sympathise with his position and feel he was given a rotten hand. Really glad you enjoyed it 😁 I have a few tweaks to add, one is that ye old white Harte was not yet built so he did not 'plot' in it. I may also delve in to his son and his pursuits on the coast ......in time.

The village of Hotham was part of John's domain too. Wonder if that is where the family got their name?
@JasmineHotham
@JasmineHotham День назад
@@stepthroughhistory it's an ancient anglo-saxon name, the first to use it were settlers of Holtham or Hougham in Lincolnshire. Then through records ties in Yorkshire, the hotham name showed up where they had a seat in yorkshire before the norman conquest, and then as you rightly say the village of Hotham.

Really enjoyed this history of Hull and Beverley. I never knew of its involvement at that time, I feel really proud of them as they stood their ground. It was just a pity that John Hotham changed side, such a silly move on his part. You kept me interested right to the end. If I was a lawyer at that time I think I would have been swayed to be frustrated with John Hotham for his disloyal act and so off with his head...lol 😂

I am always fascinated by people's reaction to Hotham 😊 the responses are always quite varied. It is so much more than what we usually here....John said no to the king in hull and then the war started...😫 Thank you, I am so glad you enjoyed it 😊 it could have been twice as long and maybe in the next few years I will look at it again.

As a Hull Man, born and bred....with a Sister who lives in Beverley, there is still a distinct difference between the two places and peoples. Hull being more Gritty, Urban and Rebellious, Beverley, the more Cultured, Richer and Loyal to the Crown.

Hehe no comment 😂 There was much more to this story on the level of the commoner which I will include at a later date. The turmoil for people who didn't have a choice in what was done to them in the name of their rulers of town etc was horrific. In regards to Hull Vs Beverley a certain rivalry appeared during the Scottish wars of independence as hull rose and Beverley fell (video available though updated podcast is much much better), hull was a deep water port and took Beverley's trade away from it. That is an issue that would rumble on for centuries but you can't stop progress. Watch this space....

Very interesting, I’ve not had the full more in depth story like that before. The people of Hull are always quick to point out how they ‘told the King to F@*# off’ but that, it seems is only because parliament got their message through first and put Hotham on the spot. If the King had have persuaded the Governor of Hull prior to that then I’m sure history would be different.. He must have felt he was doing the right thing at the time - we weren’t there and don’t have the exact viewpoint from the rhetoric and years of build up of the feelings and opinions of the people at that time (let’s think of brexit recently, for example) But then he jumps ship, which ultimately was a mistake.. I found this very interesting as a local person, Hull & Beverley are very close to my heart, I did find your pronunciation of Keyingham funny though! (Out in Holderness it is said as Kay-ingham ) I love history, especially local history so yourself and Hull history nerd are a fantastic find. Keep on with the great work if you can, and Thank you for making this video 👍🏻

Tha KS for your comment. So glad you enjoyed it. The good news is I left more out than I put in, the whole Bridlington scarborough fun is a sister episode to this one, along with sir Michael wharton and Hotham's son, the captain. Keep your eyes peeled. Cheers for the pronunciation ☺️ as I have always been a western east riding man I have not a clue what really goes on over the river Hull 😂 I know more about the surface of the moon 😂

Hotham??? Talk about being between a rock and a hard place. I think ultimately, like many low level players in this conflict, decisions we either forced upon him or swayed by a sense of self preservation. I'm reluctant to condem him. What was he to do? What would would any of us have done in his place?
