On March 10th 1973, Governor Sir Richard Sharples, Captain Hugh Sayers, aide-de-camp, and the Governor's Great Dane, Horsa were assassinated on the grounds of Government House.
It was a sorrowful chapter in the Islands history.
The Governor's coffin was borne by officers of the Bermuda Regiment, and Sayers' by a party from the Welsh Guards. The coffins were carried atop 25-pounder field guns of the Bermuda Regiment, to the frigate HMS Sirius, The ship's Royal Marines provided an honor guard on the flight deck.
HMS Sirius conveyed the bodies from Hamilton to St. George's, where they were interred at St. Peter's Church.
An unnamed Bermudian poet wrote this for Lady Sharples
On beach and ocean shines Bermuda's sun,
But violence and evil cast their gloom
Even where perfumed oleanders bloom:
Even where sales are leaning on the wind.
A light has been extinguished in our midst.
In shame and grief Bermuda bows her head.
Could kindness and brotherhood be dead
Where golden kiskadees and blue birds sing?
