Sir Richard Shirreff on the Armed Conflict in Ukraine: Understanding Causes and Strategies for Peace

In this fascinating lecture at the 5th UNESCO MOST Winter School in Veszprem, Sir Richard Shirreff, author of the bestseller “War with Russia” and former NATO general, provided insight into the armed conflict in Ukraine and its potential causes and future directions. Sir Richard Shirreff argued that Russia's desire for expansion and restoration of its borders was matched by NATO's desire to expand eastwards. "It takes two to tango," he noted, suggesting that NATO and the West could have acted differently to avoid the conflict.
In his speech, Sir Richard Shirreff stressed the importance of strategies for establishing peace, particularly the military strategy of deterrence. He also highlighted the need for quick mobilization, training, and deployment of troops. His warning that "there will be no peace in Europe while Putin is in the Kremlin" suggests that the worst-case scenario must be considered.
The lecture concluded with the Latin phrase "Si vis bellum para pacem" - If you want peace, prepare for war. Don't miss this opportunity to hear from a highly regarded military strategist and expert on Russia's geopolitical ambitions. Watch Sir Richard Shirreff's lecture now to gain invaluable insight into the current state of international relations and what we can do to promote peace and stability. This event was organised by iASK, ISES, University of Pannonia and UNESCO Chair for Cultural Heritage Management and Sustainability Koszeg, Hungary.
