Welcome to Day 5 of Anne Boleyn Week! Join me as I uncover the fascinating stories of Sir Thomas Wyatt the Elder and Sir Richard Page, two men caught in the tumultuous events of Queen Anne Boleyn's downfall in 1536.
Discover the illustrious career of Sir Thomas Wyatt, a poet and diplomat deeply intertwined with courtly life and the intrigue surrounding Anne Boleyn. Explore his relationship with the queen and the circumstances that led to his arrest and subsequent release, thanks in part to his father's connections with Cromwell.
Learn about Sir Richard Page's rise from serving Cardinal Wolsey to becoming a close friend of Queen Anne, and how his loyalty and relationships ultimately spared him from the fate that befell others implicated in Anne's downfall.
Delve into the uncertain times faced by Wyatt and Page while imprisoned in the Tower of London, and follow their paths post-release as they navigated the changing political landscape of Tudor England.
Don't miss this captivating chapter of history, where personal loyalties and courtly ambitions collide against the backdrop of Anne Boleyn's tragic end. Join me tomorrow for more insights into Anne Boleyn's legacy and a live Q&A session on her life and fall. See you then!

It seems so strange that those who had the right connections to the king were spared while those who were executed were the ones who were closest to him. Such an odd dichotomy.

I would be tempted, were I offered a job at Henry's court to feign some nasty contagious illness. Sweating sickness sounds like it would be FAR preferable to serving Henry VIII. In a novel I read, years ago, one of the characters referred to King James VI of Scotland as "The Royal Ingrate." I think, given Henry VII's track record in regards to the fates of friends, wives, and loyal servants, that title would fit Henry MUCH better.

I have ordered two books for my birthday yesterday. Looking forward to getting my hands on this day in Tudor history. It’s going to take six weeks to arrive but I finally took the jump and ordered it.

There's a memorable scene in The Tudors where Thomas Wyatt is told that he's being released, and he shouts "But I'm the only one who's guilty!". Why would he say that?! (Not that The Tudors is ever a good historical source)

It was the scene where Wyatt was writing these lines of poetry "These bloody days have broken my heart; My lust, my youth did them depart" as it showed the other men being executed that always haunted me. Although "The Tudors" was more fiction than fact, I feel this scene, at least the emotion of it, captured the intensity of those days surrounding Anne's execution.

That sort of dialogue is typically for the benefit of the audience rather than a true sentiment passionately expressed by someone ☺️

Do you think Cromwell let them live because he made his point proving that he could destroy anybody he wanted to so watch your step? I had the first comment.

Hmm...I can totally see that. Flexing that power. 💥💪👑 That's a really good question. I agree with you that Cromwell was totally saying,"watch your step."

If that were the case then why would he have executed George? Especially after the defense he offered? You have to remember that all of these men's deaths were forgone conclusions as was Anne's. There was only going to be one outcome and that was death for all of them. Not one of them was guilty of the crimes they were accused of.

What I mean is, there were specific reasons for getting rid of these specific people. Claire has been explaining this. There was no reason to dispense of Wyatt or Page.

Is Alison Weir a reliable source? I've heard she can sometimes play a little fast and loose with fact and her inferences there from, and I've avoided her books because of it. But if Claire finds her reliable enough to quote maybe I've been too harsh. Do you all think I've been a bit hasty?

Were they at the wedding of Henry and Anne? They didn't know about the ed. If I could speak to someone, it would be Thomas Howard, duke of Norfolk.

Hi Claire, I’m in pursuit of finding where my 12th great grandmother Anne Knollys West is buried. I met with a historian at Westminster Abbey and confirmed she is not at the Abbey like her mother and father are. Do you have any leads? Love all your videos as I am a Boleyn.

I'm so glad you enjoy my videos. I don't have anything in my research. Findagrave.com states "Westminster Abbey has confirmed her burial in the Westminster Abbey burial records. There is an Anne West buried at St. Margaret's who died in 1610 and is NOT the same person." but I'm not sure who the source was. I have seen mentions of her dying at Lasham in Hampshire, so perhaps that's a possibility? I don't know. Or Rotherfield Greys?
