I was also talking to a composer who had done a lot of work for films after the production had been completed, and he said I could have put some Jim Reeves (who I hate lol) to give it a more period sort of flavour and I think he might have been right.

I was born in 1975 towards the end of her governing period. My father tells me that there were shortages of essential items during that period. Some people had eaten food from garbage bins. It must have been awful.
That is a total lie. Nobody ate food from garbage bins then. True there were shortages. But people had a ration book each (Sahal potha - rice ration book) for which everybody received rice. Difference was Mr Dudley Senanayake (before her) gave a free measure of rice for each ration book. JR did away with ration books (on IMF terms) . And now you see the results. Do not spread lies if you do not know. I was at school during Sirimavo's time. We had the rice ration. ( for some 12 cts as far as I can remember). How much is a Kilo of rice now. Yes, we have the rice now. But people have no money to buy. The 10 measures being given out now, is simply to get the votes of the fools. Even then HE would lose.

As i remember that middle of 2008 went to meet Madam Sunethra Bandaranaika for the official purpose to Rose meed Places . There is hospitality totally great . As a disabled persons was so happy and proud because accidentally could meet Hon. Madam Sirimawo Bandaranaika was sitting on a wheel chair . She asked me the reason that why i came . I was replying her that i came to meet Madam Sunethra Bandaranaika to hand over an invitation for Sunflower Village annual cultural program. It was a great day in my life because i could meet A great lady of the world the first ever prime minister in the world . Really remarkable day in my life
She was referred to as Mrs.B. Especially her final chapter as PM brought misery to the entire population. It would have been a blessing if she never took to politics.
Next generations should be learn about mother Sirimavo. I am from 95th. I wish if we would lucky to have leaders like her, our future and present would be brighter.
I have gone through the comments on this page and find that most people praise her. She is obviously popular. There are some adverse comments too. I always take a balance view and judge anyone independently. At the end what matters is delivering goods.In this instance (1970 elections ) she failed to deliver what was promised and there were shortages and queues. JR on the other hand ( 1977 ) corrected the situation and delivered what was promised. At least his first term was very successful and the nation prospered. Of course he couldn't prevent the 1983 racial riots which resulted in the loss of many lives and property. You have to judge the two on overall performance and JR is the better leader.
She’s only now popular amongst the young generation that didn’t have to suffer through her terrible tenure. In 1977, it was a different opinion about her
Further to my earlier post policies of JR and Mrs. Bandaranaike were completely opposite. Mrs. B strengthened relations with the Communist World while JR strengthened relations with the West. One was conservative and the other was liberal. Mrs.B nationalised many sectors while the other opened up the economy. Both did it in good faith. Mrs. B failed and JR succeeded.
She was the best politician Sri Lanka had in recent times. Once Dr, Colvin. R. De. Silva said she is not a woman but a man. To me Sri Lanka was best during her period, she did so much for the country. I request current President to follow her foot steps. We have almost forgotten her these days-- please recgonize her service to the country, Mr Prime Minister (Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa ) do not forget Madam. I love you madam. May you attain Supreme Nibbhana. metta

People who praise her should ask themselves why she was so overhelmingly thrown out of power at the 1977 election. Her opponent got a record 5/6th majority.
JR Jayewardene stripped her civic rights as a lesson to future leaders. He wanted to ensure that subsequent leaders were honest and would serve the Country well .

People like her because of an artificially inflated false image. She exceeded her actions required to suppress an insurgency and created shortages of essential food items. She was deservedly thrown out of power in 1977. The new leader, JR Jayawardena rectified the problems created by her and ushered Sri Lanka in a age of prosperity and development.
A total faliure . If she lost the general election in 1970 Sri Lanka would have gone on a better and different path. The worst period for Sri Lankans was 1970/77 prior to the Rajapakse's appalling performance today( 2022 )
