I've heard through the grapevine someone making a comment that 100 mph headwinds in the rain were not possible or common. That would be due to their lack of experience/knowledge in 10/11 meter mobile radio applications. Others have stated Integrity issue. Most all roof mounts sold today are magnetic…I do not want or like that ! In the 80’s We drilled holes, clean installation…worked great, center of vehicle. 360 degree ground plane. Big Mama was one brand antenna we used. Thanks. Oh, think I will add, we had power too. I had a pick up truck, put on my camper, did not wire up the lights on it. Turned on the power, the lights on camper li up whenever I keyed the mic…..had to be careful… 👍🏻
Hi and thanks for the information. I do have a question for you, being a lot more experienced than I am, At the video mark 3.10 or so. You show the bottom part of the antenna, should there be any continuity between the center pin, and the outer ring? Would this indicate a short inside? or is it normal? To confirm the center pin with the outer edge. contacting between Being both parts if then mag~mount. Surely thats not ringht??
I tried to follow the example shown here on how to disassemble, as the SWR was horrible from the git ! Something was strange too, as when screwing the coil assembly into the mount, the cover would slip, and while listening to the receiver, the signals would fluctuate ? Trying to take the coil apart, was impossible ! Would barely turn, if at all ! I ended up cutting slits with a Dremel down both sides ! Not an easy task, as the cover is fairly thick ! I'm guessing I was sold a returned antenna, and someone put lock tight on the coil body threads ! What a nightmare ! Checked for bad connection, and or solder issue, and found nothing ! Out of desperation, I made a cover from a large pill bottle, and spray painted it Black ! Who knows if it will hold up under UV ? As for now, I'm using a small open source N7DDC Tuner, on the Ten and Twelve meter Ham Bands ! So far, so good ! Worked a station in Russia today on 12 meter phone ! Along with various other States and Countries on 10 ! So I know it's putting out some RF ! Using President Lincoln 2 Plus, so not much power ! Am I missing something here when it comes to disassembly ? Like heating with a torch ? Don't think I wasn't tempted ! Lol...! ☹️
I've been using one of these on a sirio body mount on my triple mag mount. The only issue I have with the antenna is that the chrome finish has corroded. The performance is good but not as good as the sirio 4000 high power. I drive at 80mph everyday on the motorway (highway) here in the uk and have never had an issue with the safety or swr of the antenna on my vehicle.
The Siro Performer 5000 Trucker 3/8 beat the Wilson 1000 and 5000 in my tests for both RX/TX, over 1 S unit . The trucker model has a 8" extender bar. I used a generic 3/8 inch heavy mag mount. I also tested Firestik KW-7 and even a Signal Engineering Goldenrod. The Sirio 5000 Performer trucker beat them all.
It's all about procedure .. New radio sales only at this time ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-P0W_Ltzeyyc.html Please watch video and read entire description before contacting. Thank You, 163 Hard Dr.
This is junk. It worked for a couple of days then would get intermittent send/receive and an antenna warning on my Cobra 29. Pulled the antenna apart and found that the nut holding the cable center conductor was loose. By the time I found out what was happening it I was too late, damaged my new radio. You get what you pay for.
Do not buy. Waste of time and money. First of all the package came and the antenna was bent almost 90 degrees. I bent and beat it straight with pliers and a hammer but very disappointed right out of the gate. Then I hook it all up and can't get it tuned and can't get a signal and farther than a block. I think it's a bad ground or something in the antenna.
