A review of the Sirui 1.25X Anamorphic Adapter.
I thought this was going to be a simple, fun review with some sample footage. Through many tests, on various lenses, I had mixed results and feelings. A very difficult review but a journey nonetheless!
It's worth watching for my final conclusion, it was the first time I had a plot twist that I wasn't expecting.
Some of the lenses tested with the Adapter:
Canon EF 1/2L / 50mm EF 1.8 / EF 80-200mm 2.8 / EF 100-300mm L 5.6 /
EF 85mm 1.8 / Sirui 35mm APS-C / Sigma 50mm 1.4 art / Sangyam EF 35 T1.5 / Meike 25mm T2.1

Couple of things you need to realize when using adapters. It’s not always going to work the same in a lot of lenses and this has a lot to do with either one of a few things. How many lens elements the lenses has, how sharp the lens is and also what the front element of the lens looks like. Light has to pass from outside the lens and travel all the way through to hit the image sensor. Lenses themselves are design to try to keep that light bream as sharp as possible when traveling through the back of the lens, of course more expensive sharper lenses do it better. When you add an adapter like this you are adding and extra element that complicates things. Also adding another element to the element count also complicates things. For example telephoto lenses like 70-200mm 2.8 already have around 13 elements to go through, because of this they are also prone to side glare and bad flaring that can effect image quality, adding this adapter can just compound the effect. Also adding a Diopter is another issue. On most of them the quality and coating on the glass isn’t the greatest to that’s going to effect quality. Lastly in your issue with the sigma 50 also the way the front element is shaped can effect the light traveling from the adapter to the sensor, for example the curvature of the front element can throw things off.

Thanks, for the info. All good things to bear in mind for sure. Strange that the cost as I've seen isn't always a defining fact as much as the lens design itself. Either way, my experimentation continues!

Nice video, keep it up. Fun fact: While this adapter (or any for that matter) can be used on many different lenses; the distance from the outermost lens element of the taking lens will effect its performance… sharpness, chromatic aberration etc… I don’t believe there is an issue with your adapter, just the spacing is incorrect.
@minutesback
@minutesback Год назад
Do you think it might be the step up rings that might be causing the issue?
@PatrickBishop1
@PatrickBishop1 Год назад
@@minutesback Its best to use a single step ring from adapter to taking lens. Stacking 2-3 separates the elements apart and will definitely make the image less sharp.
@minutesback
@minutesback Год назад
@@PatrickBishop1 I thought but it didn’t work that way with adapter, some lenses I mention with multiple worked better than some with single rings. Some single step rings didn’t work at all.

First I must commend you on the actual presentation and making of this review, very nicely done. The journey with a plot twist was a fun ride. I'm having a similar experience with the adapter where the results really depends on the taking lens. Appreciate the mention and looking forward to part II.

I recently got this adapter. I have tries to use it on a small B4 lens thats for 1/3 inch, that actually worked incredibly well. Indeed green fringes, but sharpness is actually pretty good when opened up (probably because the physical aperature is very small). Very top heavy, but i like the distortion on a otherwise very clinical look.

Perfect for the S5II or S5IIX, as the softness will help the almost too sharp image sensor.

Great review! I had same mixed feelings, until I've tried it with my Tamron 45mm 1.8 SP. Boy, sharpness and out of focus background were beautiful. Some nice anamorphic image coming out of this combo. Yes, there's still some green tint halo at times, must be kept under control. The closest it can get to the taking lens, the better.

When I do my follow up I will mention that I did get another version and this seems sharper overall. But I've not yet had a chance to do more testing. Thanks for your comment!

Adapter normally doesn't work well with zoom lens, lens with large front element and telephoto lens. My copy works well even with a vintage lens Helios 44m with no flares at all and decent sharpness wide open. The adapter world is indeed more hassle to work with. I have used great joy 1.35x adapter which is a little bit sharper and more characteristics.

I noticed the stack of filters you had between the lens and adapter, does that not act like a macro tube , therefore effecting the focal range and dof? Did you test with and without and get the same results?
@minutesback
@minutesback 4 месяца назад
I tried various combinations and it was the same I only took photo of what was on at a particular time. I assume you mean step up rings and not filters I didn’t use filters. I only used some diopters and tested with and without. In the end I got them to make me a custom one which is perfect and I really love it. I think Sirui have an early production problem as I’ve had 2 duds from them, both which they have corrected but their marketing team is awful now.

What causes the softness issue is actually simple: physics. The Sirui anamorphic adapter uses a variable diopter for focusing, and no manufacturer can make a diopter equially suitable for all lenses. Diopters are always optimized for a certain focal length, so for versatility, DIY anamorphic setups require several diopter-based single-focus solutions. In this case, I suspect the diopter to be optimized for 50mm taking lenses (would love to hear the accurate info from the manufacturer).

I sent the one I had back and the new one looks sharper so build quality makes a big difference. I will do an updated review at somepoint but waiting to hear back from Sirui. I defo think there was a bit of an issue with my last version.

I’ll probably buy one or two of their lenses for Fuji X. The adapter seems to suck. A few days ago I cheated a little and put the Viltrox 13mm on the Fuji and cropped the image. Because of the f1.4 it does look like a 35mm f2 anamorphic, but without the anamorphic artefacts of course. If I could just get a filter that would give me some of the artefacts (oval bokeh and horizontal flares), without destroying the image sharpness, it would look amazing.
@minutesback
@minutesback Год назад
I mean when I got to work on a lens like the 35mm I really liked it plus since the video they changed it over and the adapter is sharper. Will do an update video but for now I’ve been busy. Wish you all the best with your cinematography!

Perhaps the ability to get accurate infinity focus on the taking lenses is impacting sharpness? Some lenses focus just past infinity to allow for tolerences in different temperatures etc?
@minutesback
@minutesback Год назад
Yes, I have found tweaking the infinity focus on the taking lens to help on some lenses. However, I have since got a new adapter, and it is sharper. Also, Sirui has ghosted me on emails, so I think there are some issues they want to ignore.

Intertesting. I will have another look. I have noticed that with my version, there to be only issues with instances in which I did not completely set infinity focus on the take in lens. I tested on Helios 44, Mamiya 645 80mm, Sirui nightwalker 24mm all pretty perfect. It was always important to as well check peaking to ensure focus was achieved. Really like the results for motion.@@minutesback

@@anthonyrock5039 with or 2 instances I noticed I had to move focus just before infinity and then sharpness increased. Obvious on that occasion it is the taking lens and not the adapter lens. 👍

Dear MinutesBack, excellent video and discussion regarding the Sirui 1.25X adapter. I also picked one and had the same difficulties that you described in your video. After some experimentation with it, I think I have found the explanation the variability in sharpness that you have experimented. My understanding is that two issues play into consideration, one is surly the sharpens of the taking lens, but this does not explain the variability, the second issue is critical and is the precision of the taking lens to focus at infinity. You see, this adapter demand that the taking lens be precisely focused at infinity and say put at the position. Even a minor deviation of 1mm will cause the type of image degradation that you have experienced. I tried this lens using some isco red projector lens and racked the focus at infinity as precisely as I could and the results were very good. See the video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pY3m8zO07Ks.html

@@minutesback Sorry about that, it is now live. This video is not a review, exactly, but some footage that I took with this adapter and some spherical projector lenses from ISCOs. Initially, I had tried it out with a Canon 24-105 and a 70-200 and my impressions were like yours. To be frank I was a bit disappointed with the performance that I was getting from this less. But it was when I decided to try it again and decided to use a projector lens e see your it worked that I understood how critical focus in infinity plays a critical role. Even a very slight deviation in the flange distance can be very detrimental to the image quality. I definitely intend to make a video trying to demonstrate that in the near future.
