Bronwen Hughes who directed Harriet the Spy would go on to do multiple episodes of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. So if anything, she was ahead of her time. * I have a love-hate relationship with Harriet the Spy. I applaud its dark themes and highly relatable elements, but struggle with the inconsistent tone desperately trying to keep it light-hearted and comedic too to the point that it's disconcerting. You look at two great female-centric kids films that came out in the 90s-Matilda that same summer and Madeline a couple years later-and how they were each better because the former mixed both tones perfectly while leaning on the darker stuff while the latter picked the lighter tone, but still had pathos with the darker stuff though.

Thumbs up for "Trainspotting", but S & E don't show much knowledge or curiosity about heroin or drug addiction in general. In retrospect, given the enormity of the issue, their dismissive review appears to trivialize a film that Cannes thought was much better.

Heroin and methamphetamine addiction and abuse were rampant in Nazi Germany. "Shoah" is one of Siskel's favorites.

Harriet the Spy was SUPER disappointing. Rather than a fun film about a kid spy, we get a mellow drama about a kid going through a nervous breakdown.

I don't disagree with you, however, must say, it's spelled melodrama.

They "took another look at Independence Day",but didn't screen it again:)=Greatness:)

Twister & Independence Day didn’t make it to their top 10’s best of 96 Because Siskel and ebert feel that the special effects can only work in a predictable story from twister and for Independence Day they thought it was goofy & silly film I gotta agree with them 👎🏻👎🏻 thumbs down for both of these films

Harriet the Spy has to be one of the gloomiest kids movie I watched as a child. Now as an adult, I can clearly see that Harriet was wrong the whole time, and the movie was just sad and depressing (and not in a good way).
