I started watching Sneak Previews on PBS when I was a kid, and watched the show every week, until Gene's passing. People thought that I was nuts because I cried when Gene died in the 90's. As a life long movie lover he left quite a void. I would have never seen a lot of great movies if it wasn't for these guys sharing their passion for films with an audience filled with people like myself. Gene was always my favorite, but now that I'm older, I appreciate Roger's opinions much more than I did the in the past. I can't express how happy I was when I found this channel, and was able to watch my old friends again. I'm aware of how long this comment is, I just wanted to say thank you for showing me what I thought I'd never see again.

Haha. Just watched Cannonball Run II last night with my wife and when I told her it was directed by the same guy who did Rad, she slapped “downstairs” because she hates Rad. 😂😂 As of January 2023, Cannonball Run II is free on RU-vid right now btw.

The Woman in Red, Cannonball Run II and Micki & Maude were the biggest moneymaking hits of 1984 while Friday the 13th Part 4, Silent Night Deadly Night, Starman and Windy City were doing okay at the box office but City Heat, Best Defense, Harry & Son, Where the Boys Are, Sheena, Rhinestone, Dune, Bolero, Johnny Dangerously, Swing Shift and Fandango were all box office disappointments.

I can see how Dune probably would have disappointed the fans of Frank Herbert's epic. There's just no way anyone could've worked everything in that book into a two-hour movie. But for people who had never read it, like me, I thought it worked. You are able to grasp the situation. It's got a good feel. The sets are incredible, the performances are good, the special effects are adequate (despite the obvious miniature work, but that's where we were in '84), and Toto's music is very good, especially the end credits. It's not the greatest sci-fi movie ever made, but it's good enough. It's better than all the Star Wars and Trek clones we had to put up with at that time.

Dune is actually better than the Recent Remake that was made by that Overrated Hack Della Noveu, or whatever his name is.

I’ve read the books and still think Lynch’s Dune is ok. As you said the sets are amazing. Great cast. And follows the books pretty well considering the time constraints
@timreeves8937

It was needlessly gross with too much narration and thoughts instead of good dialog and showing us. People got what Lynch was doing, it just was people did not like it.

Siskel slammed Dune mostly because of things that are in the book, while initially noting that the novel is well-loved. I don't mind critics making legitimate complaints about how a movie ended up, or even if they observe that elements of the story might be distasteful, but his critique here seems to be be very unfocused and rather unfair to the filmmakers.

Director Richard Benjamin made a great film a couple of years before "City Heat" called "My Favorite Year" with Peter O'Toole. What a difference it can make when you have a good script and the right direction which"City Heat " was sorely lacking.

In August/September 1980, he took over the direction from Blake Edwards on "City Heat" at Warners/Turner. Then he brought Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds in their roles. Along with several other supporting cast members including Jane Alexander, Irene Cara, Rip Torn, Richard Roundtree, Madeline Kahn and Tony LoBianco. Plus several crew members including producers Fritz Manes, Art Levinson, Patrick J. Palmer, screen/storywriters Samuel Fuller, Joseph Stinson, casting director Marion Dougherty, costume designer Albert Wolsky, music adaptor/conductor Lennie Niehaus, cinematographer Bruce Surtees (replaced Nick McLean), production designer Edward C. Carfagno and film editors Jacqueline Cambas and Ron Spang. Four years in the making, the troubled production was finally released in theaters on Friday, December 14, 1984 and has now becoming an cult classic. Filmed at Universal Studios in Universal City, California - U.S.A.

1984 was a terrible year for movies, but ironically, it was one of the best years in music ever. Just looking at even the top 100 songs of the year, it is almost astounding how many big hits there were that are still on the radio now by some of the biggest names of all time. I don't know if movie quality is inversely related to music quality, but it sure was in the 1980's. Almost all movies in the mid 80's were like this. Big stars coasting in vanity projects on their names in terrible movies, lame sequels and and buddy cop pictures.

I feel like the only person who didn’t like the woman in red. It was unfunny, cruel, mean spirited, vapid, I was actively rooting against Gene Wilder‘s character, and I just called to say I love you is Stevie Wonder‘s worst song. Fight me. I don’t care

I think you missed the point. Kelly LeBrock's bush is in that movie and that made up for all its shortcomings. It's literally the only thing I remember about The Lady in Red.

@@littlekingtrashmouth9219 I never saw that one, but there so many movies where people shouldn’t love the “hero” if they thought about it for a few minutes. Revenge of the Nerds comes to mind instantly. Filming women in the shower without their permission and “r*** through deception”…

I have a lot of problems with Sheena, but I enjoy it, and wow, did Siskel and Ebert, who I usually respect, get the music wrong. Sheena's lifelong mentor and best friend is unjustly imprisoned and Sheena is summoning animals to help rescue her. It's a tender, sweet, triumphant moment, and the music is appropriately sweet and triumphant. In fact, the music is the movie's best feature, it's very sentimental but I'm a sucker for it.
