It's a Hammond Organ being pushed way out of its comfort zone, including being dropped on the floor with the reverb spring turned full on to make that crashing explosion sound. Jon Lord, a player like no other.

Deep Purple has there 23rd Studio release. The singer is 78 and demonstrates that you never get to old to produce good music. PORTABLE DOOR is the single. The LP is =1

Those instruments were, yes, organ and also synthesizer. Jon Lord had a pitch bend ribbon between the organ output and the amp (or board as the case may be), which accounts for those crazier sounds. See their live performance of "Space Truckin'" at Hofstra University for a "demo."

Ah haha hell yeah! This song got the groove and kick and then some. One of those songs where Deep Purple was just having so much fun fooling around with jammin'. Off of the "Who Do We Think We Are" album, released in 1973, when they were the top Billboard selling rock band in the world (according to a documentary I saw). And the vocalist, Ian Gillan, had prior to recording this album left his notice. He said he'd stay with the band for 6 months then leave after some touring. The year after, in 1974, Deep Purple released the album 'Burn', with a very young David Coverdale on vocals and Glenn Hughes on bass and vocals.

In fact, the conflict between Gillan and Blackmore worsened during the recording of this album. At the first sessions they were able to record only two songs - Woman From Tokyo and Painted Horse - and if the first song became a hit and one of the most recognizable compositions of the group, then on the second Blackmore did not like Gillnan's vocals and demanded a rewrite, but Gillan refused. And if you consider that the album was recorded from July to October 1972 and it was released in February 1973, and Gillan wrote his statement in December 72, then he decided to leave after recording the album, but before its release.

@@ninoorjon Well no Gillan left in the summer of -73, he gave about a 6 months notice and left after they finished their last gig in Japan for the tour of that album. And yes it just gradually worsened from day one till he left. According to Roger Glover, the lyrics of the song "Smooth Dancer" of that album is about Blackmore.
