Thanks to a Mr Oittinen who emailed asking for a Finnish Winter War video, since RU-vid is iffy about World War 2 content, I did what I could, hope you enjoy Mr Oittinen.

You must know how to camuflage and how to think like the enemy and after all of that you are seeing peoples faces. A lot of ex snipers say that it is false that they forget the faces of enemies they killed, they remember them. And also, if you are at war, God forgive, the first thing you go to take out is the machinegun, the next, sniper.

Christian Newaye Except Ivan like most soviet snipers exaggerated their numbers for the war effort. Simo didn’t. Simo had more confirmed sniper kills in 3 months than that filthy commie had in 5 years. When it's winter and around -25~30° celcius, your appreciation for those mittens, colloquially called "no-can-dos", will get a healthy boost! :D Though I gotta say that I've wondered what the deal is with this kind of older FDF footage so commonly showing conscripts in the warm seasons wearing a mitten in one hand...
@TealJosh
@TealJosh 4 года назад
@@MosoKaiser It helps you handle the warmer parts of the rk-62. The plastic cover wasn't a thing back then, or if it was it wasn't nearly as widely in use as it is today. It used to have the barrel bare for you to touch by accident when it's scolding hot.
@MosoKaiser
@MosoKaiser 4 года назад
@@TealJosh Oh indeed, I didn't think of the older style "cheese grater" model! The front hand guard on those does cover the barrel, but not the gas piston tube, which will get warm/hot with prolonged firing. A few guys in my company got issued an older cheese grater model RK when I was in the army; don't recall them having any issues with burning their fingers with them, and we did our shooting wearing fingered regular gloves. But then again, we didn't do prolonged firing, mag dumps, or stuff like that.
@TealJosh
@TealJosh 4 года назад
@@MosoKaiser yeah, I meant the gas piston. I got a chance to deal with some proper heating. I had to pretend to be adversary for new NCO students and me and my friend(moto-AU, ite olin kuski) were given 6 drum magazines full of blanks to split between us. He had to go do something else so all of sudden I had 5 drum magazines to go through in an afternoon. Best part was I didn't have to shoot those hundreds of blanks through my own rifle. Rumor says he might have used brake cleaner to get the dirt off his gas piston and tube. I can't confirm or deny that fact ;)

So interesting to see footage from the transitional age of the assault rifle. Seeing them sprint forward while spraying full auto from the hip. Whereas modern doctrine dictates that the full-auto switch setting on the assault rifle should rarely if ever be touched. But I've also seen it more personally. I'm born '93, never got conscripted because of some medical issues back then. Still managed to become a gun nut and become a self taught shooter. So then one day a friend of mine, born '92 was at my place and we dicked around with my replica guns and saw that his awful outdated chicken wing shooting stance. Seems he was from the batch of our conscripts, from a time and place where they were still teaching outdated weapon handling doctrine. Told everyone in there was also taught to shoot with the other eye closed.

Bike infantry lives on in Europe even in the post-war decades. People have to remember that this isn't a fully motorized Europe yet. It's not strange to see a draft horse once you step outside the city limit. Bike infantry functions like dragoons. Infantry uses the bike to march and then dismounts to fight. One of the manouvers they practiced was pulling a line behind a truck or tractor with an infantry platoon on bikes holding the rope.

It’s crazy to know that valmet has a massive level of influence over western firearm design even though it’s only been fielded by one countryIt’s inspired most is really weapons and next GEN rifle designs after eat itself was inspired by the AK 47 but the fins made their own variation of it and it’s also crazy how in America cost two grand to have one of these beautiful rifles

It had a massive influence on the galil but thats about it really. Sweden was somewhat close to adopting it but it was generally more expensive and harder to produce compared to the Fnc (Ak5) but the galil would see service for abit in the Swedish police before being replaced by numerous different firearms

So I am learning something new here. Finland is using almost exclusively (if not all) Russian equipment? I admit, I am mostly ignorant of Finland's role in the Cold War. I do know they were not part of the NATO allied countries, but they are in NATO's Enhanced Opportunities Partnership. Which is basically part of NATO. However, didn't they fight a very bitter Winter War against the Soviet Union in WWII? Only to basically get a stalemate that included loss of territory (so a loss if you really want to be honest)? How and why did they get all that Soviet equipment?

The number of Russian equipment is getting less and less as the time goes by. Everything new is either domestic or bought from the west.
@pohjantuulet247
@pohjantuulet247 4 года назад
Such is life when you're an independent country next to a dictatorship that tried to conquer you in the past but ultimately failed at it. What pretty much happened, was that while we we're able to preserve our independency, we became political friends with the Soviet Union. For a while, it was considered somewhat dangerous to speak out negatively about the Eastern neighbour, at least in public. We actually had this formal pact signed with the Soviets, that in the event of Western invasion (should the cold war get hot) we would basically have joined the Russians. Hence, the equipment. We were logically training to fight against the East, but ideologically against the west.
@herrakaarme
@herrakaarme 4 года назад
Because it was cheap. The Soviets didn't have much foreign currency (and their own currency was worhtless in the West), so they liked to trade by bartering. Finland exported Western stuff to the Soviet Union and got in return mainly oil and weapons. If Finns bought weapons/vehicles from there with hard currency, it was also cheap compared to equivalent Western stuff. However, it's pure nonsense to say it would be all Soviet equipment. During the Cold War, Finnish military had plenty of Western (including domestic) stuff as well. Nevertheless, if you can get good, usable stuff for half the price, you'd be a fool not to take it. These days it's far more rare, though. But we still get, for example, machine guns from Russia. However, you can't buy anymore any high tech stuff from there. It would be useless during a war because a Russian general in Moscow would press a button and it would cease to work. Not to mention we couldn't get spare parts and supplies anymore if a war happened.

The simple explanation is that we were a very poor country but we got much of our gear fairly cheaply through good relations with the USSR, which was courting us pretty intensely during the Cold War. Without those good relations, it wouldn't just mean no BTRs, it would mean no wheeled APCs at all, because we simply wouldn't have been able to afford any Western counterpart.
