I've been using this tactic to really good effect in a SF near me that is super dense, and impossible to stalk. There's some old logging sites close to water sources that are heavily regrown, with small narrow paths through the regrowth where the old logging tracks were. The deer will quite happily trundle along these tracks to and from the creek, or browsing along the vegetation at the trail edges. When the wind is right, it can be a really easy take. Another good tactic when you have a more broad gully that doesn't funnel them is to sit on the shady side. Especially in the morning. Sambar will almost always walk up the side that let's them catch some rays.
Awesome mate, thank you for sharing 😊 sounds like you've really figured out your spot, and great tip about sitting on the shady side. I've found the same on really cold frosty mornings they seem to be heading up to find some sun and if you're on the shady side you have plenty of time to watch and pick a shot. I've also used gardening pruning tools to create my own paths into places before as well. If I find a place I think would be a great site and wait location but it's a bit thick, I'll actually go a week or two beforehand and clear out a pathway and shooting lanes so when I go to actually hunt I'm in with a better chance 😊
Yeah I think most Sambar seem to live in the really thick places, they're starting to really spread out though, so those more open places will probably get better over time 😊
Be handy if they lived in warrens like bunnies. Just sit in front of an occupied deer warren and wait; certain that they’re there and will come out. Nice work
Thanks mate 😊 really appreciate the feedback. And yeah I'm away in Canada visiting family at the moment but really keen for some actual hunting when I'm home Next week, almost out of venison right now so going to try and self film a proper hunting trip
