SITTING BULL (1954): Full Western Movie, Full Length Cowboy Film, English. Sitting Bull is a 1954 Eastmancolor Western film directed by Sidney Salkow and René Cardona that was filmed in Mexico in CinemaScope. In a greatly fictionalised form, it depicts the war between Sitting Bull and the American forces, leading up to the Battle of the Little Bighorn and Custer's Last Stand. It was the first independent production to be filmed in the CinemaScope process. Featuring sympathetic portrayals of Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, The New York Times called it a "crazy horse opera".
A cavalry officer sympathetic to the wronged Sioux fixes a meeting between Chief Sitting Bull and President Grant but a dishonest Indian Agent and a hateful General Custer test the Sioux's patience, threatening to derail the peace-talks.
Director: Sidney Salkow
Writers: Jack DeWitt (screenplay), Sidney Salkow (screenplay)
Stars: Dale Robertson, Mary Murphy, J. Carrol Naish
PLOT (Wikipedia): Major Robert Parrish (Dale Robertson) of the 7th Cavalry is considered by some to be his own worst enemy because he's not a "team player". Formerly one of the youngest Colonels in the Union Army during the American Civil War, he is now a company commander under Lt. Colonel (formerly Brevet Major General during the Civil War) George Armstrong Custer (Douglas Kennedy). His fiancée Kathy (Mary Murphy), daughter of Parrish's commanding general, breaks off their engagement because he has not risen in rank.
Parrish gains no friends amongst the civilian community when he chastises them and threatens to "break heads" when they violate Sioux lands. Custer and Parrish's exasperated General and once prospective father-in-law reassigns Parrish and his company to the Bureau of Indian Affairs where Parrish is outraged at the treatment of the Indians and refuses to carry out the orders of the Indian Agent to shoot his escaping charges. Parrish is court martialed and visits his former commanding general--now President of the United States--Ulysses S. Grant--who demotes him to Captain. Parrish convinces the President to come to the Western frontier to meet Sitting Bull and prevent a war.
Back in the West, now Captain Parrish meets Kathy who has announced her engagement with Charles Wentworth (William Hopper), a former major and now a war correspondent. Using captured Indians, including Sam, a former slave now a Sioux, Parrish meets with Sitting Bull (J. Carrol Naish) who agrees to meet the President in a secret meeting. Further conflicts with the Sioux lead Custer to lead his Regiment out assigning Parrish to guard supplies.
Following the Battle of the Little Bighorn that eliminates Custer, most of his men, and his romantic rival Wentworth, Parrish tries to befriend Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse (Iron Eyes Cody). As Parrish knows the US Army's plan of attack, he leads the Sioux to safety in the North. Parrish is court-martialed again, stripped of his rank, and sentenced to death by firing squad for treason.
As the execution is about to take place, Sitting Bull comes to the fort to speak with President Grant. Parrish had told him "the Great Chief will understand," believing he would show mercy to him because his only intention was to prevent more killing. Sitting Bull's pleas with Grant to spare his life. Grant then commutes his sentence to being discharged from the service.

Pity the focus of the film is soft in the upload...cinemascope should be appreciated. The ending blows, Sitting Bull met Grover Cleveland but never met Grant. America’s Indian Wars in real time lasted 315 years. If an average lifespan of native Americans was 70 years that would be 4.5 generations in a state of perpetual war with the American military. It was an annihilation of a race of people first founding the North American Continent that began in 1609 and ended in 1974, the last life imprisoned native American is alive at 77 years old today.

The news of Custer's whole command being wiped out - *and reports that his body had been mutilated* - sent the country into a rage and public opinion forced leaders in Washington to send whole armies to the west to crush the American Indians! Sitting Bull himself fled to Canada for 4 years and ultimately was killed by Indian police sent to arrest him on the Standing Rock reservation in South Dakota where he had lived after surrendering. He was 59 years old.

In 1881, about 5 years after the Battle of Little Bighorn, Sitting Bull (1831-1890) surrendered. He made regular appearances at Buffalo Bill's Wild West Shows. On December 15, 1890, Sitting Bull was accused of encouraging Ghost Dance Rituals, he was killed, when he attempted to resist arrest.

It's a romanticized version because they killed Sitting Bull December 15, 1890, just before the Wounded Knee massacre. As with Crazy Horse, his own people colluded with the Calvary to kill him. His spirit still lives on, though, and he was there at Oceti Sakowin camp in 2016. 🇺🇲🦅🌲🐟🐢⚖️⚔️

As a person whose blood is more Native North American than anything else, I am angry that the Indians of old were treated in such a shabby and disrespectful fashion. I am also very much ashamed that the white eyes never, not once, ever kept their word, unless pledging to kill all my blood brothers counts. Dale Robertson puts in a sterling performance, I think he was one of Hollywoods most underrated actors, great to see him in a starring role.

Custer was by virtue an aggressive Indian Hater. He also didn't like being wrong, even though he was wrong in many ways. He was like a lot of palefaces back in the 1800's era, he figured the only good Indian was a Dead Indian. At the Little Big Horn it came back to Haunt him when he refused to let Discretion be the better part of Valor, and it caused his own demise, not to mention the demise of basically his whole command. Another thing was that yes, during the Civil War he had been a General. But as so happens after wars are over, most soldiers are demoted back to a lower rank. So was Custer after the Civil War. He was reduced in rank back to the lower rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Normally and unofficially the ranks earned in battle are called "Blood-Ranks", as they were not earned through the normal promotion channels during peace-time, but were earned in battle to replace the higher ranks which were killed. So, when Custer was assigned to the 7th Cavalry, the paperwork was sent in to promote him back to the rank of Brevet General. (Basically the term brevet means "acting" which also means basically a person is that rank and is entitled to all the privileges of that rank, but doesn't actually receive the higher pay of that higher grade.).But by the time the battle of the Little Big Horn took place the paperwork was not yet officially signed. So, in essence, yes he was a General but only a Brevet General in unofficial terms. Unfortunately Custer was killed before the paperwork was fully completed and signed, so he was still in essence only a Lieutenant Colonel. Though by the time of his death, two things had occurred. (1.) The paperwork was officially signed, though posthumously, without the knowledge that he had been killed in battle. and (2.) Due to the slowness of communication during that era neither the word (or the paperwork), had reached Custer, nor had the word that he had been killed at the battle of the Little Big Horn had reached Washington DC. In all respects he was a Brevet general again even though it was posthumously awarded. But because he was unaware of it being official and it was awarded posthumously he was still nothing more than a Lieutenant Colonel in all respects as well, even though most later written historical records falsely give him credit as being a general prior to and at the battle of the Little Big Horn. I also know that there will be others who will disagree with this, but it's also quite obvious they have not fully researched history, though they will probably say that I didn't either. But either way this is a great movie, and it does show the way the palefaces treated the Indians, as well as the way Custer refused to accept that discretion would have been the better part of Valor and that possibly if he hadn't been so Bull Headed and would have listened to others then that battle and his death along with the death of basically his whole command as well as the deaths of so many of those Indians might just have been averted, and history itself would have been changed.

Hollywood had to fit in a fictitous angle that the americans cared about the welfare of indians just so that the american version of history made them look compassionate. All the indians wanted was a bit of land and to be left alone but because gold was discovered, it led to their destruction. The real truth is that US military acted like Nazi's even before the word was invented. Custer's sole mission was to ride into the Indian village and kill all the women and children.

After their victory over the American army, Sitting Bull and about 5,000 of his people escaped to Canada, where they were given sanctuary and lived in peace and safety (from the American cavalry and settlers) for 5 years.

I had this film at my grandparents house growing up. This is a historically inaccurate film. Crazy Horse was an Oglala Sioux, and not Sitting Bull’s war chief as he was Hunkpapa Sioux. Good quality picture though. I’m not sure if Major Parrish was real or not, but if you read the story of Crazy Horse, I don’t think so.

There's a game it's called age of empires you can play as the Sioux it's a strategy game then I saw your comment and I saw the word hunkpapa that's the same how there camp is called in my game :)

Judging by this movie, the one culprit that caused a lot of men from both sides to die was Custer. Ye thought that by wiping out the Indians he would be a national hero but he was the real problem. So was the man in civilian that starved the Indians n killed Sitting Bull's son.

I love the movie but it's not historically correct. Sitting Bull was not at the little big horn and President Grant was in DC, but that is a Hollywood movie for you.

@@neganrex5693 I have been to the battlefield over a dozen times and have extensive knowledge of the three separate fights. Sitting Bull's camp (Hunkpapa) was the closest Indian camp that was attacked by the initial charge of Major Reno in the valley. I have seen the agreed upon location of Sitting Bull's TP ring that is now where the gas pumps at the Conoco Gas Station is at the trading post and Post Office at GarryOwen. Sitting Bull was among the first to hear the 7th Cav. attack and even saw some of Maj. Reno's skirmishers when they first dismounted. You are incorrect.
@johnandrews3547
@johnandrews3547 Год назад
@@neganrex5693 Sitting Bull planned nothing as he was herding the women and children to safety. It was Chief Gall who initially took charge and directed the fighting . Crazy Horse did not even participate in the Reno fight. Crazy Horse was in for the final closing moments of the battle at last stand hill.
