My grandmother born in Maui, Hawaii. She always sings in other than her Pacific islander world. Never sing in English or tagalog. But this song reminds me of her. Thank you. 😭 I miss her so much.

Ula fala is made from the segments of the pandanus fruit described by botanists as carpels or keys. (Source: Museum of New Zealand). It is mostly adorn by a tulafale during social and customary occasions. The paogo tree( also lau ie and lau fala) is one of the trees whose leaves are used by polynesians to weave mats, fans and other crafts.
Just wanted to help you out the "ula fala" referred to is not pineapple it is the traditional ula paogo "ula fala" is the term used when speaking more formally. I am suprised no one else picked this up. I remember 'cause I used to ask my Dad why they call it a "ula fala" when I had always known it to be ula paogo. Too bad I do not know the English word for paogo; maybe someone can help us out; but it sure ain't pineapple. Love this beautiful song and melody.
'ula fala' is made from the fruits of pandanus trees. Pandanus is generally called 'laufala but when specifically referring to different varieties, there's a 'laufala' variety, there's a 'lauie' variety and there's a 'paogo' variety. Laufala variety has no sharp scales on the sides of the long leaves and texture is not too hard and they are used to weave sleeping mats and floor mats. Another variety is called lauie which has sharp scales at each side (for weaving fine mats)' and another variety is called 'paogo' also has sharp scales too (for weaving papa laufala-hard texture mats used for the floor). Paogo and laufala both bear fruits. My mother has a lot of those laufala and paogo trees, when they bear fruits and when they are ripe, the fragrance is beautiful. Those fruits are used for 'ula fala' and nowadays, ula fala comes in all shapes and sizes with people adding their own creativity in making it and painting it as well. When I was young I used to dread going to get the 'paogo' with sharp scales after my mother had cut them and sent me to carry those from the bush. RIP mum!
