I remember why. Just prior to the film’s release, Ellen Degeneres came out and announced she was dating Anne. It killed the box office and the reviews weren’t good. Apparently Rock Hudson could play a believable straight guy but as soon as people discovered Anne was dating a woman, people suddenly didn’t find her dating a guy to be believable. Not much has changed, except that the internet gives a voice to everyone, and that’s a good and a bad thing.
@@christhornycroft3686 I don't think Anne dating Ellen had any impact on the box office and most people didn't care if someone was gay by the late 90's.
@@BishopWalters12 I agree, it had nothing to do with Anne dating Ellen, it was poorly marketed and there were better movies that summer. Still a very watchable flick.
In summer 1998, there's deep impact, godzilla, the Trueman show, the X-files, disney mulan, armageddon, lethal weapon 4, the mask of zorro, saving private Ryan, blade and there's something about Mary.
FINALLY!!! I’ve been dying for someone to react to this one. It wasn’t a huge hit but it’s so darn much fun. I loved seeing Ford as a beach but kinda guy.
It flopped because she was publicly dating Ellen Degeneres. So blame homophobia, like you can blame the anti woke crowd for a lot of movies and shows featuring non white people in lead roles flopping. The more things change….
I absolutely agree - additionally, Harrison Ford is the epitome of a heart throb that I aspire to be, if only in my own mind. Of course Jacqueline Obradors is an absolute angel!
One of the funniest romantic comedy adventure films ever made! I saw this with my parents in the theater and we loved it! RIP, Ivan Reitman, 1946-2022 director and Anne Heche, 1969-2022.
This was one of the first movies to address concern about Harrison Ford's age and his ability to still be doing action adventure type roles, to the point where they included dialogue to reassure the audience. "You still look good." "I still AM good!" Twenty five years later and he's still proving how good he is.
19:45 The head pirate is played by Temeura Morrison. He played Jango Fett in "Attack of the Clones", the clone troopers in "Attack of the Clones" and "Revenge of the Sith" and most recently, Boba Fett in "The Mandalorian" and "The Book of Boba Fett". He also had a cameo in "Obi-Wan" as a down on his luck former clone trooper.
Second time Han Solo accidentally kills Boba Fett :) (I know Boba Fett didn´t die in Return of the Jedi and that Morrison wasn´t Boba yet at that time)
8:24 Schwimmer's line "Well done, silicone." was a nod to his 1997 TV Movie "Breast Men" in which he played Dr. Kevin Saunders, one of two doctors who pioneered silicone breast implants.
two of the pirates are Temuera Morrison ( starwars) and cliff Curtis ( fear the walking dead ) Both New Zealanders that have starred to together in other films ( once were warriors and river Queen ) they are good friends in real life. Good reactions guys it’s a fun movie.
05:33 Harrison Ford actually flew the DeHavilland Beaver shown in this film. After the film was released he was so enamored by the Beaver that he went out and bought one for himself. In many interviews he's stated that it's his favorite airplane to fly. No, he hasn't run afoul of the FAA in this airplane like his others.
Anne Heche, totally underated(!). She could hold her own with Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman in Wag The Dog. Loved this watchalong with you both, as usual. A romance flick is always welcomed.
One minute she's dating Ellen, then she shoots a movie with Harrison Ford, and a short while later she's straight again. The Force is strong with Harrison.
Years ago, Ann Heche won a daytime Emmy for playing two identical twins, one good, one very bad, on the old soap opera Another World. She was amazing in that.
So Glad that this one finally Won a Poll, it's always been a Fun-Favorite of Mine and for My Mom as well!✌Thanks to You-both for this Reaction💝I hope that more people will re-discover it for themselves🤞and that "Angelica" left an everlasting Impression on Me too! 🥰👌
- "We might be here for a long... long long... long long long... LONG LONG time." 😆 - The actress playing Angelica eventually becomes a series regular on NYPD BLUE in its latter half/third til the finale. She's GREAT on that show, but I still think of her fondly from this movie. Gorgeous! - Was that Boba Fett as one of the pirates?? 🤯
My favourite Harrison Ford fact: once some tourists got lost in the remote area where he lives. He volunteered for the s&r with his private helicopter and joined the searchpattern. And he really found them! Imagine being half starved and frozen to death and bloody Indiana Jones himself climbs out of your rescue vehicle. To bad no one took a picture from their faces in that moment XD
Wow! Great idea about spinning that wheel and hats off to Chuck who chose this movie!! I saw it on TV once...ended up picking it up on DVD because it's a really fun watch. One of those movies that makes your forget about your life for a while. Great reaction from both of you!! Thank you!!
As I understand, Ford agreed to do this movie on two conditions. Everything aviation related had to be accurate. He wasn't going to speak dialogue that no pilot would, especially radio transmissions. And in any scenes that showed him flying, that he would actually be flying the plane. The producers agreed to the first, but insurance said no way to the second condition. So Ford said no. Then the insurance company said ok, as long as there was another pilot in the back hiding on the floor. As a pilot myself, I can confirm the accuracy of the pilot dialogue. After the filming was over, the producers surprised Ford with a DeHavilland Beaver like the one in the film. I think he still has it.
Apparently the character played by Heather Graham in Bowfinger was inspired/based on Anne Heche. Regardless, it is a great comedy with Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy.
Thank you for the rare reaction of this wonderful film! I haven't seen it for a long time, it was nice to review it in your company) This is my parents' favorite movie). By the way, great work by Ivan Reitman, the creator of Ghostbusters, he is good at romantic adventure comedies, such as with Arnold like the Twins!
So here I am watching my favorite movie and I thought to myself I wonder if anyone has reacted to this and ironically here it is one day apart. Destiny you guys are 😂
I really like this movie, fun all around. It showed that anything wrong can happen. Nice reaction. Harrison and Anne make a great couple. RIP Anne Heche, she died in 2022. I know her from I Know What You Did Last Summer, this one, Volcano, and John Q.
This movie is so much fun. Also it was my mums favorite movie. We watched it together many times. She passed away to cancer last July. Thanks for reminding me of this great movie and the joyful moments we had back then. 🥹
The pirate leader is Temuera Morrison. You guys should really check out his breakthrough movie, Once Were Warriors, a New Zealand drama about a Maori family. It's a rather tough watch (due to its dark themes) but definitely worth it. And as a plus you'd probably be the very first to react to it.
I’m not gonna lie you guys are so calming to watch idk why but you just are. I always go back and watch your Michael Myers watches I think you should do more. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for this one (and thank you Charles Mitchell for submitting this one). I haven't seen this in over 15 years. A fun, light predictable Rom-Com, reminiscent of Romancing the Stone. I wasn't sure if Harrison Ford could pull off a Rom-Com, but he did good. A couple of other romance-centric movies he did well: Working Girl, Random Hearts, Regarding Henry are others he did that I liked. Thank you!
Underrated film. Anne Heche was a brilliant actress, check out her roles opposite Johnny Depp in ‘Donnie Brasco’, Robert DeNiro and Dustin Hoffman in 'Wag the Dog', and with VInce Vaughn and Joauqim Phoenix in 'Return to Paradise'. She was before her time. RIP.
Makatea is a real island, a raised atoll, and is part of French Polynesia, of which Tahiti is the largest island. Makatea is about 100 miles northeast of Tahiti, and about 2,000 miles south of the Hawaiian island of Kauai, where the film was shot.
Wow! The Wind and the Lion was on the list. I love that movie. I remember there was a controversy when this movie was released. Shortly before it premiered, Anne Heche announced she was in a gay relationship with Ellen Degeneres. Some said that hurt the movie because no one would believe she was in a romantic relationship with Harrison Ford or David Schwimmer for that matter (different times). Apparently, according to Heche, director Ivan Reitman asked her to downplay her relationship with Ellen because he thought it was a problem for the film. It's an entertaining movie regardless and Heche went on to a number of memorable appearances TV series like Ally McBeal, Everwood, and Men in Trees.
This was a good movie. I enjoyed watching this in the theater because of Han Solo. But both actors were really good in it. Please react to Johnny Dangerously. It’s an airplane style comedy with Michael Keaton.
FUN FACT: This was around the same time Anne Heche revealed her relationship with Ellen DeGeneres. She got a lot of backlash because of it and Harrison Ford and director Ivan Reitman expressed that the press cover might be hurting the film's reputation. Heche almost lost the part and her career. However, Ford also came to her defense and said, "I don't give a damn who you're sleeping with. We're making a romantic comedy together and I'll see you on set". Heche had respect for Ford until her passing in 2022.
Great format with the spinning wheel ! I am sure it will open you guys up to a LOT more movies. There's a ton of gems out there which are going lost in time. I saw this only for the first time about 5yrs ago... Great feel good flick.
I've been hoping someone would react to this movie. I've seen it several times. It's underrated. I'm pretty sure it wasnt a big success due to Anne Heche playing the lead, but I personally think it worked well with her as the love interest. I personally didn't find her attractive enough as a love interest before this, but thought her personality was cute and I bought into it.
