The long history of amusement parks in Michigan, started a long time ago in the 1900’s spanning decades of amusement park entertainment fun. The city of Flint Michigan played an integral part in the automobile industry, and six flags, with ambitious dreams, created a world first - six flags auto world! Opening in July of 1984, autoworld was an engineering marvel and wonder, struck by the unfortunate reality of the Michigan economy at the time among many other factors, the city of Flint’s amusement park industry is short lived, but filled with ambition and far reaching hopes. Lets take a trip to six flags autoworld on todays episode of lost abandoned and forgotten amusement park history!

It’s SO hard to track down, but the historic societies in Flint are a good resource. We couldn’t make it out there to check any of them out or schedules always conflict with their open times but if you’re in that area definitely check it out. Lots of information we missed out there, still something we want to dive into a little bit more!

Wow!! Blast from the past!! I had no idea Autoworld was a Six Flags park. I can't remember the year, but I went there one time between 89-92 on a latch key summer field trip. The only thing I remember is a massive Christmas tree that would talk to you. There was a guy out of view with a microphone who was the tree's "voice". He told me I shook his branches too hard.

A talking christmas tree might haunt me 😂😂 i heard it was ambitious but underwhelming from people who visited - they wanted an amusement park not an epcot about cars type of thing

A Six Flags park without a roller coaster. Oh no, its failing, what should we do. Eh, we will just throw in the towel instead of adding a couple of coasters. Geez, what the hell.

Yeah bad execution. If they had 2/3 coasters it would have made park goers happy and probably willing to experience the dark ride stuff they had and enjoy it more. Basically heard it was an epcot for automobiles with no coasters lol

Basically all news articles and historical society sources on these parks - 1 news station had footage for us to use its not easy putting it together when theres not much out there - waterwinterwonderland, lansing state journal, center for economic accountability article, and 99wfmk article about the park plus some wayne state and detroit historical society clippings. Mlive had a lot of pictures, gary flinn had the autoworld tour video in 84. Reads like old news coverage of it or a school project forsure. Will work on changing things up in future history vids.

I’ve been looking for info on this for years! Before this I’ve only found a few websites that mention it. It was the only reason I watched Roger and Me (which the scene where the woman kills a rabbit still haunts me)

Yup. It's my hometown. So for a brief time this was my home park. Think Epcot but every dark ride is themed to the history of the automobile. For a kid in the 80s it was a huge let down. All this hype for a new amusement park but then it's basically just the Henry Ford Museum with a tiny disappointing carnival in the foyer. It was a cool building. That's about the best thing I can say about it....
