The singers on the video are;
Enrico Caruso 1873 to 1921, Maria Callas 1923 to 1977, Hermann Jadlowker 1877 to 1953
Giuseppe Di Stefano 1921 to 2008, Beniamino Gigli 1890 to 1957, Titta Ruffo 1977 to 1953
I've created a playlist of the "Great Recordings" videos that I hope to steadily add to and if you wanted to listen to them all the link to the playlist is
• Great Recordings
The recordings here are as follows;
0:00 Enrico Caruso : Senza nisciuno (De Curtis) Rec 1919
2:55 Maria Callas : Casta Diva (Norma) (Bellini) Rec 1949
11:47 Hermann Jadlowker : Ecco Ridente In Cielo (The Barber of Seville)
(Rosinni) Rec 1912
15:53 Giuseppe Di Stefano : Salut, demeure chaste et pure.(Faust).
(Gounod).Rec "Live" San Francisco 1950
22:10 Beniamino Gigli : Sebben, crudele (La costanza in amor vince
l'inganno) (Caldara) Rec 1950
25:50 Titta Ruffo : Finch'han dal vino (Don Giovanni) (Mozart) Rec 1914
I've tried to improve the recordings as much as possible but the pre 1925 acoustic recordings, paticularly Jadlowker and Ruffo, are still not very good.
Putting English translations to run with the video photos became difficult after Caruso so, instead, I've put them below. Hopefully they are OK.
English Translations
CASTA DIVA (Chaste Goddess) Is a plea to the Moon Goddess for peace
Chaste goddess, who dost bathe in silver light
These ancient, hallowed trees,
Turn thy fair face upon us,
Unveiled and unclouded
Temper thou the burning hearts,
The excessive zeal of thy people.
Enfold the earth in that sweet peace
Which, through Thee, reigns in heaven....
The holy rites are ended.
From the sacred wood
Let every unbeliever go.
When God, in his dark anger,
Shall demand the Romans' blood,
Then from the Druid temple
My voice will thunder forth.
Yes, he shall fall.
I can punish him -
(But my heart can never do it.)
(Ah! bring back to me
The beauty of our first love.
Then, against the world itself
I shall be your defense.
Ah! Bring back to me
The peace and warmth of love,
And in that love I shall find again
Life, fatherland and heaven itself!)
Ah, be once more as you were
When first I gave my heart to you!.
ECCO, RIDENTE IN CIELO
Lo in the smiling sky,
the lovely dawn is breaking,
and you are not awake,
and you are still asleep?
Arise, my sweetest love,
oh come, my treasured one,
soften the pain, oh God,
of the dart which pierces me.
Oh joy! Do I now see
that dearest vision:
has she taken pity
on this soul in love!
Oh, moment of love!
Oh, moment divine!
Oh, sweet content
which is unequalled!
SALUT! DEMEURE CHASTE ET PURE
What unknown emotion now fills me?
I feel that my whole being is in the grip of love.
O Marguerite, here I am your feet!
Hail, chaste and pure dwelling where
One can feel the presence of an innocent and holy soul.
What wealth in this very poverty!
What bliss in this humble cottage!
O Nature, this is where you created her beauty!
This is where the maid grew up beneath your wing,
Grew up under your gaze!
Here, too, breathing into her soul,
You lovingly turned this angel of heaven
Into a fresh, blooming woman.
This is the place, yes,. here it is!
Hail, chaste and pure dwelling
SEBBEN CRUDELE
Although, cruel love,
you make me languish,
I will always
love you true.
With the patience
of my serving
I will be able to tire out
your pride.
FINCH'HAN DAL VIN
For a carousal,
Where all is madness
Where all is gladness,
Do thou prepare.
Maids are pretty,
Dames that are witty,
All to my castle
Bid them repair.
I'll have no discipline,
Folly shall rule it,
Some minuetting,
Each one shall fool it
Some a fandango,
So they are fair,
Some minuetting,
So they are fair!
Then in the gloaming,
Pensively roaming,
Some pretty damsel with me will stray...
Beauties in plenty my list adorning,
Will, ere the morning,
Not say me nay, none say me nay

Di Stefano from 1950 ......never forgettable this aria sung by him though other tenors had more ( vocal) success with this part, f ex Gedda or Kraus , but Pippo dwells in the ears with this salut demeure chaste et pure......

Thanks for listening Chang, I'm glad that you enjoyed the video. I can't pin the comment with the details in because RU-vid have taken away that facility from me. They call it an advanced feature and, for some reason they say that my channel is not good enough to have it. I could get it back by sending a photo of my passport or a 30 second video of myself through my mobile phone but I don't use it for the internet. See you.
@MountainwalkwithMusic
@MountainwalkwithMusic 10 месяцев назад
@@michaelmcgrailengland Michael! Don't you have a smartphone with Internet connection? Maybe RU-vid is asking you to send a certificate to your phone to verify your identity. These days, phones are being used as a means of proving an individual's identity. This may be because RU-vid does not know your identity exactly with a laptop or computer.

@@MountainwalkwithMusic Yes you are right Chang. It only happened the other day, I contacted the chat line and they said they couldn't help. It had to be done through a phone. I do have a smart phone but I just use it to make calls. I expect I'll have to connect to the internet and do what they ask.
@MountainwalkwithMusic

@@michaelmcgrailengland Connecting your phone to the Internet or Wi-Fi is simple. If you go to the phone store in your town and apply, they will solve it right away. Of course, it costs money, but it's something you have to do if you want to do RU-vid. Good luck. Michael!

Hello Chang, that was a misty day for a walk in your latest video but I'm sure that you would enjoy it anyway. That's a very unusual and attractive tree at about 1:01 I noticed everybody was trying to get a photo of it. The music is very nice but, of course, not something I am familiar with. Good night Chang.

Here comes another great collection of fine arias (plus a hauntingly melancholical and gloomy Neapolitan song) and outstanding voices! And again I‘m grateful for finding some of my favourites among them! Although I‘m a tenor loving person (which doesn‘t mean that I do not love and appreciate other voices as well!) I find it particularly satisfying and enjoyable that you also included the lion among the Italian baritones and the primadonna assoluta among the sopranos - with one of her amazing renditions of „Casta diva“, an aria she performed in such a brilliant way that no one so far has been able to outshine her (with the aria or the role of Medea as a whole.) Excellent choices, magnificent recordings! ✨✨✨ Thank you very much for putting them together and sharing them, Michael! 🙏🍀

It's my pleasure Harriet, thank again for listening. Yes, tenors are my main interest and I must say that since I started my RU-vid channel I've discovered some fine singers and music that I hadn't previously listened to. I'm sparing no expense with shamrocks today. Here, take four, you deserve them! ☘☘☘☘

@@michaelmcgrailengland Michael, I feel so honoured by your generosity and kindness! Four shamrocks! It really must be Christmas time… 😉 Just like you, I discovered a lot of fine singers and recordings when I slammed into RU-vid - as a mere listener, depending on the work and dedication of others. You are one of these others, and you‘re certainly among the very few very best! There‘s something special about tenors… I don‘t know what it is. When they are great they are absolutely fascinating, when they are poor it hurts more than when a baritone or mezzo soprano have their flaws. Is it that we are less forgiving when it comes to tenors? Are their flaws more audible and therefore more disappointing? I‘m not sure… What do you think? Warm regards! Instead of shamrocks or the famous four-leaf good-luck clover it‘s Christmas trees and snowflakes I‘d like to send you today! 🎄❄️🎄❄️🎄❄️🎄

@@hrbooksmusic7878 Thanks for your message Harriet, it's an interesting subject. You've probably got a saying similar to "one man's meat is another man's poison" and it seems to apply to music as much as anything. but I'm happy with my own favourites and forgive them their little flaws. But tenors have always been my favourites and Maria Callas was the only soprano and Paul Robeson the only bass baritone. Thanks for the lovely Christmas trees and snowflakes. Best regards, Michael.

@@michaelmcgrailengland Just like you I‘m a very forgiving person when it comes to my favourites, Michael… After all, nobody is perfect, and we all are happy when others are kind enough to forgive our own little flaws… I‘m not sure if there‘s an exact equivalent to „one man‘s meat is another man‘s poison“, but „des einen Freund, des andern Leid“ (one person‘s joy, another‘s sorrow) at least comes close. And of course everyone has the right to their own taste, and that’s something I try to remember and respect… well, most of the time. Some tastes are so incredibly bad that I feel the urge to make a snarky remark. Say the word „rap“ and experience how I react! 😃 More snowflakes for you, this time embedded in shamrocks for lots of wintery luck… 🍀 ☘️❄️☘️❄️☘️❄️☘️ 🍀

Jadlowker first, before opera was a Jewish Cantor, (as was American Jewish tenor Richard Tucker) and the Romanian born Jew, tenor Joseph Schmidt , but sadly there are no Cantorial records of Jadlowker available, as there are with both Schmidt and Tucker, but by all reviews of his Cantorial singing, Jadlowker's cantorial art was of high quality, and he moved his large voice with great trills and cadenza's and great flexibility, very easily. Jadlowker was born in 1977, he died in 1953. RIP.

Oh I wouldn't know about that, I live in the past with all this stuff. I missed your posting the date myself even though it's perfectly plain! Jan Peerce once told me he visited Jadlowker not long before Jadlowker died, where Jadlowker lived by then in Israel, Anyhow he was a fine Tenor in his day and as you probably know, he was the German Kaiser's favorite tenor!

@@shicoff1398 No, I didn't know he was the Kaiser's favourite, I hadn't heard him until you mentioned him a while ago. I've been experimenting with the video narratives, somebody else said recently that they were just about unreadable.

Yes, he was as he did sing the majority of his roles in German, and in fact I'll tell you what is interesting for me is that my grandfather knew him well, as they both where not only Neighbors growing up in Riga but YES DISTANT COUSINS , my Grandfather left Riga Latvia with his older brother in 1892 for Chicago (at age 12) to escape the Russian army, plus as in Latvia then, it was the situation for a long term. As far as Jadlowker my grandfather was a bigger fan of Caruso's voice and saw him twice as he did not sing in Chicago more than twice, and By The way according to local Chicago news at the time, Caruso was visited backstage by Al Capone the gangster who at the time ran corruption in Chicago, Caruso wanted nothing to do with him and brushed Capone off backstage, he also knew that though Alphonse Capone liked Oprea, that he knew little about it, he was (Capone) IMO a smart man, even if Corrupt and set up Soup kitchens in Chicago during the depression years, so he had quite a loyal following. My grandfather told me that Nobody had a greater voice of the spinto type that Caruso had and he saw them all from about 1902 on to the late 1960's, then with declining health and vision, he spoke some German, so was also a fan of Wagner opera's and was a Melchior fan, he liked the voice, He told me Tucker in his voice type and power, yes but not so much the sound d was the closest he ever saw to Caruso! and that Gigli was magnificent and had very good power as a Lyric tenor, but all in all Caruso in the house had these over tones missing in the recordings, at least that was what he told me , he had a personally autographed picture from Caruso because Caruso had my grandfathers nephew do some translation work for him and the young man (my dads older first cousin was well known in NYC literary circles and a friend of Caruso) I was supposed to get that picture signed with my last name of course from Caruso but a nasty older cousin of mine, (now dead) took it when my grandfather died and I was living then in Los Angeles, by the time I got to Chicago it was gone etc. So you see I did inherit tons of Caruso 78's my cousin didn't want. He wasn't even a big opera fan and that picture is worth signed by EC with my last name is worth a lot of money! Oh well that's family for you. Jadlowker was so popular in Germany even though a Jew that he was the favorite then, it was well before Hitler.!!!!und
