It's GEAR tips and tricks time, brewers, meadmakers, and winemakers! For beginner homebrewers, there can be a lot of questions as you get started. In over a decade of home brewing, I've learned a lot, and I've made a lot beer, mead, wine, and cider. Usually the lessons I've learned have come by trying and failing - sometimes with great fanfare! We made this video to help pass along some tips and tricks specifically about homebrewing gear - some being a bit unconventional or uncommon: including chopsticks and a bidet!

My local supermarket has reusable draw-string mesh bags for carrying fruit. They cost 20p each (25c) and can hold about 2-3kg of cut fruit each. I bought 5 and I can't believe that I used to brew anything without them. The same supermarket just gave me ten x 20 litre lidded buckets from the bakery department for free. They used to contain cooking oil, so they're food-grade plastic. I just need to scrub the smell of doughnuts out of them, drill a hole in the lids, fit gromits and they're good to go. The manager of the department is definitely getting a bottle of something for that.

During the pandemic, I've purchased: mortar & pestle (for whole spices), pH meter, 1 gallon "carboys" for making mead, and a rolling stand for my Grainfather. All have paid dividends.

I got a pair of stainless steel cooking chopsticks. Theyre twice the length of regular chopsticks and washable. They take practice to get used to but once you fo they're the best
@granttapson9581
@granttapson9581 2 года назад
So I'm not the only one who makes regular use of chopsticks. Easy to sanitise and use to get things in (and out) of a carboy neck as well. I've been meaning to get a large funnel for a while. A cut off soda bottle would probably work as a budget solution...

Great tips! ❤ Instead of nut milk bags, I buy these lingerie washing bags at the dollar store. They're very fine mesh, are about 12x14 inches and have a sturdy zipper closure. Because they literally cost $1, I have a few in my laundry room and a few in my brewery area for hops, steeping additives, really anything you can imagine using a small brew bag for, and they wash and sanitize beautifully. 😊

Spring clamps. Useful extra pair of hands, especially for brew in a bag setups
@DointheMost
@DointheMost 2 года назад
Next to my “chip clip” wire clips, my heavy duty clamps definitely come in clutch. Especially for not losing a brew bag in the mash while I’m breaking up dough balls.

my basement had a shower that we never used at my old place. I got an adapter to hook a garden hose (used a braided washer hose) and a garden sprayer to blast out fermenters, etc. Ended up just putting a utility sink in the shower (still using the contraption) for cleaning brewing stuff. worked amazingly well

Instead of nut bags, I just buy a yard of curtain fabric and cut to size. Much cheaper than nut bags and works great!

If you get silicone measuring cup set, they do double duty. It does mean a scale zero between bowls though.

Definitely. I have a couple that are 21 g, but all the rest are 19. So best to tare between measurements!

clean the bags and such with oxiclean every few stains to whiten them up. I use disposable 2oz and 4oz portion cups with lids, like what you get takeaway ketchup in for putting my doses of things for a batch. They are reusable but cheap enough that if you lose or wear them out, it isn't a big loss
@DointheMost
@DointheMost 2 года назад
I probably do need to hit that bag with OxiClean. The sumac really did a number on it!

I have that same funnel, I purchased mine by accident though. I thought I was getting a medium size funnel when I ordered it online. My cellar sink has the built in sprayer and it provides a decent force for cleaning up. I use binder clips and pipe cleaner as third hands to hold hoses in carboys. To clip the carboy jackets closed for different size openings. for clipping paper over to read while making etc..

Chopsticks.. I like the reuseable stainless ones
@DointheMost

Because I’m lazy and like to throw things in the dishwasher, I prefer the disposable ones. The stainless and plastic ones slip through the holes in our cutlery bins!

A Vacuum Degasser no doubt is a tool most do without, but I consider essential. I want all the gas gone before I bottle. With the vacuum, you know when the gas is gone. The smaller version vacuum sucked (pun intended), but I ordered "The Pro" and it's great (powerful and adjustable).

I have 2 manual , long stem Brushes , that bend to shape , like yours . If I like something, I get 2 of em , one to use and one for a spare . / My wash area is outside , on the back side of the House 🏡 . A Double Sink with work area on each side . I raised the Spicket to 4 feet 6 inches , off the ground . Tall enough to stick my Head under it to Cool off . Have a screw on adapter to have a Garden Hose one side and just the Spout on the other side . Also have the same setup out by the Gate's of my Hound Pens . For washing off stuff from the Garden , shucking Corn 🌽 , washing Squash, Cucumbers, Collard Greens, Mustard Greens, Watermelon 🍉 and Honey Dew Melon 🍈 . I don't know what I'd do without 2 double sinks with wash boards on each side . 🐯🤠

Man, we actually have one of these bidets at our house to help us rinse our cloth diapers. I'm embarrassed to say that ours has been horribly underutilized. I'll definitely be putting it to good use in the future. Thanks for the great tip.

Today as I was bottling by myself I wish I had a rack to hold my gallon carboy at an angle so I didn't have to tip it while bottling and making a mess. Suggestions? Otherwise my husband is going to make me one kind of like a tilted wine rank.

how long do you usually do your pbw soak? I'm always concerned that I don't get my pbw cleaned off fully regardless of how many times i rinse my carboy.
@DointheMost
@DointheMost 2 года назад
I usually use OxiClean Free instead of PBW. Soak about a half an hour, then rinse 2-3x. That is usually plenty to lift anything stubborn, and I may use the brush on it if it's really intense.

@@DointheMost so you clean your carboys with Oxyclean Free? What's the process if you don't mind quickly explaining
@DointheMost
@DointheMost 2 года назад
@@briggad00n48 I usually only do that with ones that have serious stuck-on gunk. I use a hefty scoop and fill them with hot water. Let it soak for 30 minutes minimum (overnight if it’s some real grime), then drain, brush, and rinse a few times.
