Six month update on my Prostate Cancer diagnosis

Just over six months ago I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and almost exactly six months ago I decided to share that experience in a video, in the hope that it might help someone else experiencing the sort of symptoms I was. I got an overwhelming response to that video so, six months later I wanted to update you on what has happened since, and how I am travelling.
And its fairly good news....

I was having a wee in a pub in 2016 and there was sign up encouraging over 50s to go to a mass screening. I went, and my PSA was somewhat high. After a few years of checks I eventually had to have a biopsy which revealed cancer but not a serious level. 6 months later another biopsy revealed a deterioration and I had to have hormone treatment followed by 20 sessions of radiotherapy. Outcome. 3 years on, all well. MEN. Get checked.
@MattsPlanet
@MattsPlanet Месяц назад
Thanks for that - pleased all is well even if it wasn't a pleasant experience to get there - I still have the occasional twitch about the biopsy! But the message is clear - get checked!
@malcolmmckenzie9027
@malcolmmckenzie9027 Месяц назад
That’s is very reassuring as I have just 4 days left to go of my 20 days of radiotherapy and will be on 12 weekly Prostap injections for the next 3 years.

I have lymphoma, was on active monitoring (aka watch & wait, watch & worry) for 4 years then had a short course of immunotherapy and now in remission. This waiting is good, prevents treatment too early and preserves the highest quality of life for as long as possible. Good for you finding out about your prostate issue early, my dad had this cancer and passed away at 91 from other conditions, nowadays there are many good treatment options & is much hope for the future. Wishing you all the best.
@MattsPlanet

Thanks for sharing. It is easy to worry about not doing anything, but any level of research reveals that all prostate treatments can be really unpleasant.... Getting those low PSA scores did allay the worries to a great degree

As always wishing you all the very best Matt, I hope that things turn out well for you. My own Leukaemia is body wide throughout all bones, joints and the entire vascular system, so other than a bone marrow and stem cell transplant there's little surgically that can be done for me, that operation is extraordinarily high risk, the disease is currently controlled by a mixture of powerfully toxic daily chemotherapy, weekly self injections, anti-viral drugs and god knows what else they pump into me, but I cope, just, I do what I can when I can, but hey S**t happens. I just used my last remaining Avios on a Business Class return to Malaga in October, I can't wait, I've been following the BA 420 on FR24 and it's either BA, Finnair or DAT equipment being used on that sector ? As for Travel Insurance, Pah! a ten day break in Benidorm with TUI I also have booked for October, holiday cost just over £1000 one insurance company quoted me over 2.5k to cover it, suffice to say I didn't bother, preferring instead to take my chances. Keep well Fella and happy landings too.

Very good news. Some people will not understand why active management beats having the prostate removed. Which unpleasant side effects would that have caused? Some women have breasts removed for small cancers and some even just in case....so what could be so bad about removing it?
@MattsPlanet
@MattsPlanet Месяц назад
I'll not get too explicit but the prostate contributes something quite important to an activity a lot of adults very much enjoy... So no prostate and that adult activity is never the same again.... And if they don't get the prostate out cleanly they can damage nerves in the area which means no adult activity at all.... So I'm keen to hang on to mine for as long as possible!

Sounded to me last November when I commented that you were very early . Those are low PSA numbers and in my PC experience I was much higher before treatment. Like 20’s 30’s + and some much higher on the psa. Those infections aren’t easy to treat as it seems getting the medication to the prostate isn’t as easy as other places . For something serious I don’t ever remember PSA numbers declining . Sounds like an infection and effectively the whole thing could be completely over with .

Great news, Matt - and yes, you’re very lucky to have found out and to be in control! Prostate cancer is so common and as you say if you hadn’t had the presumed inflammation you would never have known. It shows we need a better screening test for men than PSA, because presumably yours would have been in the normal range despite the cancer if it hadn’t been for the inflammation. Although I’m a woman I feel men are rather left behind when it comes to screening in the UK. My dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer with PSA 50 at age 70. He died of an unrelated cancer at 77 but I’m sure if he’d been screened earlier he wouldn’t have had the complications from all the radiotherapy he had to have and would have been in generally better health, and would perhaps have lived a bit longer. It’s great that you’re bringing this to the attention of men - people listen to someone they enjoy watching on RU-vid and who has almost become a family name! Look after yourself and keep up the great videos!

Thanks for that and sorry to hear about your dad... Men can be a bit rubbish about this sort of thing so if I can help a few people in a small way, it makes my experience feel more worthwhile

My insurers are very interested in the skin cancer I had chopped off ten years ago (Australian, it's standard). Matt, you have my best wishes. And I'm not just angling for a CCR invite. Whoever put that organ where it is had a sick sense of humour.

Cheers Peter - the perils of living in Aus eh? At least the place is geared up to offer tests... And its not the most convenient place to have a misfunctioning organ, that's for sure!!!

I am charting my PSA scores!!!
@gavroberts
@gavroberts Месяц назад
Thanks Matt, great things are going on the right direction, massive follower of yourself …. Stupid question…and I feel stupid asking, … but as 5.6 is “bad” what is “really bad” that would mean the more aggressive treatment you mentioned at the start of your video? … again mate, thanks for your content, both myself and my wife and children have travelled in much more luxury and “style “ *(BA style!!) than if I would have never had watched your content 👍👍
@MattsPlanet
@MattsPlanet Месяц назад
Thanks mate - happy to share more!!! My GP semi-panicked when he saw 5.6, but the people in the Urology department didn't think it was a big deal - I've heard of people having scores over 200.... Plus the straight PSA test is only part of the story - the urology people use the PSA divided by the volume of the prostate - I'm a big unit so have a larger than average prostate, so my PSA of 5.6 may be less relative to the volume of my prostate than a small bloke with a score of 5.0... But whatever the score, the judgement on treatment is based on the imminent risk from the tumour itself. It gives me some annoying symptoms (although I've stopped consuming caffeine which has helped), but chemotherapy and radiotherapy can be really unpleasant and removing the prostate entirely (which seems to be the preferred option these days) has permanent consequences. So as long as the prostate is causing less trouble than the treatment they'll leave it alone. The PSA is a signpost that something is up, but its not something that will ever dictate what the treatment should be. Cheers!

Good video, thanks for your advocacy derived from your own personal experiences. Delighted the numbers have dramatically reduced - a short session of sterotatic radio ablation should neutralise the small lesion. All the best

Thanks. Another MRI in 6 months and if the shadow from that mystery infection has gone, we may get a better view of the real issue.... Which may trigger a conversation about whether aggressive intervention is now worthwhile

So, I nipped to Card Factory to get you a thoughtful greetings card, but it turns out they don’t sell “Wish you glee, for quality pee” cards. I think there could be a market for those 😉. Joking aside (and humour is needed), it’s heartening news to know that your results are coming back low. You are a lucky man to have had an infection and that’s a sentence I never thought I’d write. 😮
