@@JohnBradley-y9y Is your fuel tank explosion proof? Since gas cars are over 10 x more likely to catch fire I hope for you they are. Unless you're kind of suicidal.
I have been watching BYD for a while now. We have a KIA EV6 AWD which is a great car, but for our 2nd car, I am waiting for the BYD Shark to hit our shores. With BYD now adding 800VDC architecture and increased LFP Blade capacity in the 2025 models, I would not be surprised if BYD becomes the market leader in Australia.
I notice that few people ever comment on this but an absolute deal breaker for me in not getting a Tesla Model 3 was the lack of a front camera!! Further the lack of indicator stalks and a front panel while not deal breakers pushed me to get the Seal Premium which has all these things and more (HUD). The only things I prefer about the Tesla are its auto-park and FSD both which are unavailable in the Seal.
@@JohnBradley-y9y that's ok, fool, good luck to you, just don't have any baby, or the world will be in trouble 🙏. Enough of my time. "Do not correct a fool, or he will hate you; correct a wise man, and he will appreciate you."
I like the seal it looks like a proper car, a lot of EV cars look pretty silly. If i hadn't planned to do something else, i would have looked at buying one of these Seal performance cars.
The reason why I bought a Tesla was due to their Supercharger network. I've never been disappointed when arriving at a supercharger. I've tried some other chargers and most are working. But when they're out of order it can be very stressful.
Couldn’t agree more. And now that some of them are open to all EVs, it makes it easier to road trip in other brands too 👏

I am owning a BYD Dolphin since 10 months (23,000 km) and I am very impressed about the quality. My complaints are also the software and ADAS, which is quite over-sensitive. I heard, that the Seal is better. But I will try lane-keep-assist again after seeing your video.
@@morganangel340 When I say ADAS, I’m not really referring to the ICC (although that’s not great either) - it was more to do with the lane keeping and emergency braking alerts/manoeuvres during regular driving that were initially potentially dangerous - this has now been rectified thankfully
My experience 5 months in with the seal premium is similar to yours. Now about 11000km on the clock as a daily commuter Wollongong to Sydney and my only real gripe (aside from the traffic sign alerts, thank god I will be able to turn that off permanently soon!) is also the ICC. It has most definitely improved significantly from the suicidal state it was in originally and I am comfortable enough to use it on a straightish road, but a big issue I still have is that when you change lanes with ICC on it will assertively turn the wheel to (over-)"correct" your position in the lane (and then complain that you're out of the lane when it does over-correct), so need to make sure I have a prepared grip on the wheel. Otherwise amazing car, and I hope they keep iterating on that ICC as it has a lot of potential.
I have admired your balanced view of this vehicle and the brand in general. I appreciate you are super educated, but I would still argue it's very hard to offer this sort of viewpoint when you have been so immersed in a compelling ecosystem like Tesla. Its a little like an iPhone guy getting his first Android. Your vox pops have been fair and balanced as far as I can tell. I have enjoyed them, well done.
Hi Tom, thanks for sharing the long term experience. One q, with the AC do you leave it swing automatically or you keep changing settings? Is it good enough in automatic swing?
I find the ICC to work fine on its own, but yea the lane keeping component is still way off where it needs to be. Useful in slow moving heavy traffic but not good to rely on when moving faster.
The lease on my ICE car is ending early next year. Got the option to pay the balloon and keep the car or sell it and get a new car. Thinking of a change like an EV car which make sense on a new lease as there is currently no GST on EV and there is FBT exemption, that is the repayment is 100% deducted before taxable income for the duration of the lease which considerably reduce the cost of the EV. On the other side i have to think if its better to have an ICE or EV vehicle in terms of battery safety, ongoing cost (Insurance, Servicing, battery replacement etc.). Too much to think about for someone who hasn't drive an EV yet. While i have no doubt Tesla engineering is top notch, I kinda find inside a bit boring. I would prefer to have a Heads up display which i'm use to with my current car and also the console behind the steering wheel. I don't want to take my eyes off the road to watch the centre console everytime how fast i'm going. People say you'll get use to it but I don't think I will. Hopefully Model Y Juniper will bring some changes to my liking. If it is, then Tesla will be my first choice, otherwise will look into other model. I have been looking the Polestar 4 and will be interested to see what Xpeng and Sealion has to offer. Any good advice from you Tom?
Test drove a Model 3 Highland RWD last week and loved it.... However... I did miss having a stalk for an indicator and I can see how it would be problematic making consecutive opposite turns and trying to indicate via buttons. Sadly, having to make these sorts of quick turns is a part of my daily commute. I also found that having to glance to the side at the screen to check my speed was a pain. I'm a traditionalist and do want a console in front of me. A HUD would also be awesome and it looks like the Seal provides this. The more I see about the Seal, and watching your videos, I'm beginning to wonder if I take a chance on the BYD Seal instead of the Model 3 as my first EV.
I own a Seal U 2024 and what I can say is that the Infotainment system is great, for me at least, since I am a software engineer and I can install any app from the App Store. I even have ps2 games and a controller to play with it while charging. I can watch tv and use native apple music, waze with splitscreen, which is way better than using Apple CarPlay
Yes 150kW max for the BYD Seal Apparently the next Seal (known as Seal 07 - currently in testing in China) with the new Evo 3.0 platform has 800V architecture which will enable it to charge at 250kW speeds
Will be interesting what the mid-cycle refresh brings, would hope they fix the 7kW AC and up that to 11kW AC. How are the tyres or does the Seal come with the Conti EcoContact 6 already? Also improvements in infotainment system would be good didn't know about the sound system, was never sure what it was like and not a huge sound guy myself I just usually take whatever the manufacturer provides and goes with it. Would you look at selling it say at the 12 month mark and perhaps a XPeng G6 with its crazy charge curve and can see how it compares to the Seal, different class of car obviously being a CUV vs a Sedan I realise.
@LudicrousFeed mainly because I'm fed up with Elon Musk, his conspiracy theories and right-wing musings. I don't feel like putting any more cash into his pockets.
Can you comment on the suspension please? I own 2022 modelY and despite loving so many things about the car I simply feel the suspension is well below the standard.
Just got my seal premium..100% recommend turning off emergency braking every time. It seems like the seal doesn't understand roundabouts well and I've been thrown forward by unexpected breaking twice.
Hmm interesting, this used to be the case when I first took delivery but since the OTA software updates, the ADAS has improved a lot to the point where I don’t need to fiddle with it before each drive anymore
I got to go sit in a Seal today for the first time. I was too tall to fit. I’m so incredibly disappointed. The guy at the BYD showroom said “were you expecting S-class amounts of room?” 😮
@_Sensei_8 I asked the salesman and he said they plan on releasing one new model a year here. He wasn’t sure what was next, but he thought the Sea Lion was a likely candidate. I actually drive a 60kWh LEAF with no issues. I easily got into the Atto 3 there at the showroom too.
Test drove the seal performance version yesterday. Acceleration was like nothing I've ever felt before. I can only imagine what the Tesla model 3 performance goes like. Apart from that it is very smooth and quiet. Suspension felt a bit floaty and i was expecting the stereo to sound much better than it did. Overall though quite a nice car
Cheers, I along with many of our viewers have mentioned it in my other Seal vids - I didn’t want to labour the point. Some passengers actually find OPD uncomfortable with the harsher braking so I don’t personally think it’s a deal breaker. I usually turn it off anyway in some of the other press cars I’ve driven eg Hyundai Ioniq 5
You have to recognise exactly when the HUD ADAS features go from green (engaged) to white (dropped out) WITHOUT WARNING. I've found that the ACC seems to get 'distracted' and be slow to resume/keep up........ very human 😊. A digital dropout ???. It has stalks AND ON THE CORRECT SIDE!!!. Wow. Better quality, quieter and more comfortable than that other brand ....ALSO.
@@LudicrousFeed both brand new. Its a genuine question. I was fixated on Seal until i went to test drive tesla and knowing the price.. Now i am so confused
It’s a difficult question to answer because the price point is important … but if you want me to answer a hypothetical, I’d say: If you’re after software/UX/app integration: go Tesla; if you’re after aesthetics/build/ride comfort/phone protection: go BYD

I have a friend who's eagerly waiting for the Sealion 7, wants to get one as his first EV. He's not a Tesla fan, not sure why, but the SL7 definitely looks good on paper! We also have the Atto 3 but he's not a fan of the interior, which of course is very subjective.

Mm. If that “in general” means for all or most consumers, then every new product would never make it to the second version, including Tesla, and Apple phone. 😂😂😂
Good review , I think the bigger battery is definitely the way to go , if you are thinking of keeping the car long term , how is the battery going so far. ? , cheers
I have mine in Greece for 2 monthe and 4300kms. I have to say the same. Last week we took the 2403 update. Dont switch off nothing either. I enjoy the car everyday. I want to have the lane keeping change as you mentioned and the navigation to take in considetarion the battery Level and the destination so it can tell you where to stop. Funny you should mention EVs in Greece. Heading over next month and hiring a car for a two-day return trip from Athens to Chalcis, where we intend to intend to drive around Euboea for those two days. However, looks like the EV infrastructure in Euboea is very minimal, with the public chargers which do exist limited to 20 MW stations. Does that sound right in your experience of charging in Greece? Also, hiring a car for a day to drive around Crete later in the trip. Efharisto
@@jarrodf_ Hello ...In Euboea indeed there are no DC public chargers, only in chalkis some AC's. I would recommend to hire a non EV car....But if you can arrange with your hotel to have it charged at nighttime, then wouldnt be a problem.........But again in order to enjoy the vacation there.....No EV for me in that situation! Again in Crete for a full day of driving, although there are chargers, i would gt again for a non EV car..In my situation ( I live in Ioannina, and i have i house at the island called Lefkada, where also there arent DC chargers) i charge at home every other night...So in both situation i wouldnot go for an EV.....I hope you have a great vacation!!!!
@g_liout3923 Efharisto poli. Yes, that was my conclusion, too. (Ended up going with an Audi A4 (manual) - which was surprisingly cheap, relative to others, at ~€250 for 2 daya)... Otherwise, I'm sure an EV in Athens it would be fine, but as you say, probably a bit of a challenge outside, travelling on longer road trips... Thanks again. Certainly very much looking forward. Good review Tom, your reviews are worth a lot more than most, because you review it based on the way you use it, which is how most people use an EV. Not just endless twisty roads, with an over reliance on a cars handling as well as efficiency measures and range estimates that are only based on highway speed driving.
@@LudicrousFeed be interested to see how its going in 3 to 5 years time if you still have it , while it is interesting to see how they run at 6 months or a year , they are still basically brand new , long term tells more of a story you know what I mean . the teslas don't have a jack and spare wheel , are the BYD models equipped with a spare ? some people are not fussed by not having a spare , but to me it is a deal breaker .
Glad you are still happy with the Seal, Tom. I just viewed the Sealion and am excited for the Sealion 7 to come. The one thing I liked in the Sealion interior over the Seal is that the driver’s display is in a proper visor rather than being plonked on top of the dash like an afterthought.
V2L is another huge plus of this vehicle. I had a 5-hour power outage this week and was able to power my living room as normal from my Seal and carry on with what I was doing, with TV etc. in the background (while the rest of the neighbourhood was in pitch-black darkness). V2L also means I've been able to get rid of all my gas gear and go fully electric (induction hob, lights, fridge, coffee machine) for day trips and car-camping. Although the car REALLY needs a 'CAMPING MODE' where it can continuously supply 12 VDC (for fridge) and 5 VDC (USB) when the car is locked/unattended - powered from the more efficient DC-DC converter rather than the inefficient DC-AC inverter. (Just having the V2L adapter plugged into the car, even with no 240VAC devices plugged in, uses ~2kWh per day, which is a high overhead when just charging a phone or running an efficient 240VAC/12VDC fridge).
🤪The maximum power of BYD V2L is 6KW, which is more than enough to support the electricity consumption of the entire house. What fascinating circuit and battery technology.
Thanks for the video. I also bought a BYD Seal a few months ago (I am resident of Brazil). Great car. Loving it. The ICC I turned off before it'd drive me mad.
Thank you for your detailed reviews - your earlier ones definitely helped us take the plunge and get a Seal with the novated lease. Such great value and a real pleasure to drive. Lots of people at work very interested in the car with many questions (and compliments!).
Been very happy with my Premium after just over a month (minus a few days at the panelbeaters after copping a scratch at the school drop-off). I usually listen to podcasts on the way to/from work so the sound system hasn’t bothered me although even for music I find it “good enough”. Just tipped over 1500km and looking forward to heading to south west WA for a few nights next week.
@@LudicrousFeed Thanks Tom! Happily the other party waited around to give me their details, and since we were both with the same insurer it was easy to sort it. Good to hear that there are no regrets Tom :) I bought my Performance knowing about the Telsa Supercharger network issue, it wasn't a deal breaker then, but very glad to hear that it's going to be attended to. Charging by solar is good though our solar system is coming on 9 years old now, has paid for itself well & truly but would need an upgrade to be more efficient with the car charging. As it is, we have single phase wiring at home (coming on 70 year old house) & without rewiring the house, the best the installed wallcharger will do is about 4kw (better than the trickle charger) at 20amps, so not going to hit that 7kw max the Seal can take. Again, it's how the house is wired, a known issue, not a deal breaker & has never made me have to run down to a local DC charger. Just needs a bit of active manual monitoring during the day when working from home (eg., taking advantage of a daylight free period from my energy retailer) & setting up the midnight to 6am charge as needed. The only issue I have with the Seal isn't mine but that of my partner who is in the market for a car now that her Audi has had the last rites, but she won't look at an EV, despite her acknowledged comfort & performance of the Seal as a passenger, she wants gears, tactile dials & analogue speedo etc, not touchscreens & digital displays. That's another battle for another day, lol. So I knew what I was getting when I put the order in just before Christmas last year & how the car is 5 months later after delivery has only gotten better :) And when 2403 is installed & the Supercharging fix installed, it will be better again. Think of how many other cars you can hand on heart say are better 6 months after you bought them (without spending a lot of money in aftermarket parts), that would be a very small list

That six months seems to have flown by ! Must admit , I am not sure which I prefer the look of as far as the new M3 or BYD Seal goes . Perhaps the seal by a whisker. As far as my EV journey goes , I am still waiting for the Livewire to be repaired after the bump it got in February. I have also received the first power bill since having the Model 3 SR+ , $379.29 with no special EV Tarif or working PV solar system (my solar system stoped working in February). I have travled about 3100km in that time. The car that the M3 replaced for daily duties drank 95 or 98 RON at a rate of 13.5 to 14L per 100 km , it was costing me over $100 a week to feed.
I noticed in my update yesterday, my audio reactive lighting now works with wireless Android Auto. It used to be static lighting unless i switched to bluetooth or radio. Small things but definitely moving forward
He actually quite likes the car. His criticism was very specific, related to the lack of adequate cooling of the battery during DC fast charging. That said, the overall average charge rate for the Seal during his test was still high enough to have it rank reasonably well across all the cars he has tested.
@@vasil7410 I haven't watched his 1000km challenge yet, but I noticed in the other test he did recently the temnparature of the battery cells as an average between the minimum and maximum was probably lower than the Tesla over the charging curve, it was also only marginally slower to fully charge it compared to the NMC long range Tesla. When he craps on about rapid gating whenever he tests BYD products it just seems like a bit of an overreach and beatup to me. Tesla's whilst they don't charge particulalrly quickly are very efficient though so will travel further on a given charge which is also critical in the 1000km review.
Hi there, i pick up my seal tomorrow. I am a little excited, my first new car! I have a question about whether a tethered or untethered charger is best for me. I will be regularly undertaking relatively long road trips (450-500kms) and wonder whether having a type 2 to type 2 in the car is overkill or not. Cheers
I think it doesn’t hurt to have a Type 2 cable in the car if you’re doing regular long trips. I have a coupon code for this one: evse.com.au/product/5-metre-type-2-to-type-2-ev-charging-cable-22kw | Code: TESLATOM for 5% off site wide
So, I should put the ADAS fuses back in and give it a go? I might do that tomorrow and see how it goes. It's been nice driving a car that hasn't tried to do anything crazy I must say. I'm still a bit cautious about giving it control, but I'll see what can be turned off and kept off now.
@@LudicrousFeed Is yours the performance model? If so, does yours have the overly loud pump noise in the front when charging? I did a video on that, but still haven't got onto BYD to look into it. The K-Mart service guys aren't really BYD specialists, so they didn't know anything about it. I'd say it's a coolant pump, but it really shouldn't be loud.
BYD should hire some western educated staffs to fasttrack their infotainment and user interface system. Chinese market and western market mindset are completely different and not everything is as simple as just a language conversion. The innuendos are different. It may take them another 12-18 months to make it industry standard according to west's standard which they will have to in order to increase their export. I test drove the Seal for Malaysian market couple weeks ago and you can feel the quirkiness in the user interface immediately, not an issue if you have intereact with their cars in their native language like me who stays a couple months a year in Shenzhen/Guandong but even in Malaysia they local buyers consists of ethnic Chinese and Malays are complaining the un-user friendly interface.
Would you ever consider taking the car on a defensive and advanced driving course? It'd be a good way to demonstrate the safety features and dynamic abilities of current EVs. Highly recommend the one run by Driving Solutions at SMSP.
BYD ICC uses 1 front camera and 3 mmWave radar sensors with less than 10TOPS processing power. It’s not their latest Dipilot system but definitely good enough at this price range.

Notice none of these reviewers ever get under the car and inspect the actual meat and bones of the vehicle. How is the suspension built? What kind of materials were used? Is the steel soft or hardened? There's reports in China of soft, brittle steel being used on their cars. They are falling apart. Looking at the interior is nice and all but put it on lift. I appreciate your point on the audio. Using the Dynaudio position tool I've needed to position the audio to around 3 ticks away from the absolute rear of the car and 1 tick to the left. I run Wavelet (though I'm sure there are non sideload alternatives for EQ with android auto) to balance out the audio better across channels to what I could hear...kinda left mids and pumped bass and more importantly treble. Finally pumped the treble to 9, mids at 3/2 (depending on the mood), left bass at 0 and lowered subbass to -2. Probably should check my car instead of guessing all this. I think it sounds somewhat respectable now, but doing radical changes and one sideload seems a bit much.
