Six Months of Rehabilitation for Orphaned Albino Elephant Calf Khanyisa

An incredible six months of rehabilitation and phased integration into the Jabulani herd for little albino elephant calf, Khanyisa at HERD.
Khanyisa was rescued on 7 January 2020, having survived several days on her own in the wild, severely injured from a snare that had wrapped itself around her head, severing the top lobe of her left ear and causing severe lacerations around her head, neck, mouth and cheeks. The four-month-old calf somehow managed to free the snare from the ground, but it remained wrapped around her, continually digging and cutting into her flesh.
It is unclear if her herd had abandoned the albino calf before she was ensnared or after the incident. The fact that she survived so long in the wild is a miracle; she was dehydrated, and her eyes had swollen shut from pressure building from the snare and the swelling around her head. The trauma she experienced, although not visually evident, will no doubt cut much deeper than the physical pain she endured.
The calf was discovered in a nature reserve neighbouring the south-west of the Kruger Park by two employees of the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency. She was taken to Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary in Mpumalanga to be stabilised, while the inter-provincial permit was arranged to translocate her to the province of Limpopo, where HERD is situated. The same day, our elephant care team departed from HERD to join their team to provide essential milk and care for the calf overnight.
On 8 January, the little calf arrived at HERD, to start her long road of love and rehabilitation. It is with immense pride, six months later that we can relate her remarkable story of survival and development.
The Jabulani herd of rescued elephants, all mostly orphans themselves, have accepted and adopted orphans before with great success. Khanyisa's journey began right beside the Herd in our orphanage nursery, with dedicated carers and her companion sheep, Lammie, by her side, giving round-the-clock care, support and attention
Khanyisa's rehabilitation has gone through several milestones in the six months that she has been at HERD, as she has progressed from the skinny, dehydrated 124-kilogram animal to the healthy 250-kilogram elephant she is today.
The most significant part of her rehabilitation process was the long yet successful treatment of her wounds. The open flesh of her deep mouth wounds from the snare had maggots feeding off the decaying flesh, creating gaping holes into her mouth. She also had deep lacerations around her neck and back of her ears, with a severed top lop of her right ear. First, we had to clean & treat the calf's wounds to combat infection.
On 16 January, our dedicated wildlife vet, Dr. Rogers stitched up the calf's cheek and mouth wounds. At the end of January, he stitched the back of her right ear.
Adine started with stemcell treatment on Khanyisa's wounds in March, to assist in the final stage of healing. The treatment was successful; her wounds had healed entirely by the end of March.
During these milestones, Khanyisa suffered occasional bouts of dirrhoea, which is always disconcerting with elephant calves. Diarrhoea can be brought upon from PTSD, bacteria, teething or dietary challenges as their nutritional needs consistently change as a calf grows. But the HERD team, working continuously throughout the COVID-19 Lockdown, saw to every hurdle with efficient care & managed to help the calf through these bouts, with the assistance of Dr Rogers and trusted elephant advisors.
With Khanyisa's physical rehabilitation complete, we started with her phased integration into the Jabulani herd.
Jabulani was the first elephant that Khanyisa met in person, trunk to trunk. He is a rescued orphan who was found in 1997, having suffered a similar fate, found alone, stuck in a mud pool.
Lundi, an older female in the Jabulani herd, was chosen to be Khanyisa's adoptive mother and was introduced to Khanyisa next. Lundi was the ideal choice made by Adine, since the herd Matriarch, Tokwe, already had her time filled caring for her own two children and another two younger orphans.
Over the weeks, the other elephants in the Herd were introduced step by step - at a gradual pace to not overwhelm Khanyisa or the Herd and to better monitor each of their reactions and stress levels, which we track through sampling their dung daily.
Khanyisa started to join the elephants on their daily walks through the wild of the reserve, foraging & roaming. The calf began with shorter two-hour stints and soon built up to four-hour walks, which meant another change: milk feedings in the bush. She is dependent on us to provide her milk until she is fully-weaned at the age of approximately 4 - 5 years old. The cows are not lactating as it is not our objective at HERD to breed with the elephants.
As of this week, she is now spending longer days - stretching from 6AM to 2PM - in the wild with the elephants, and joining them for their afternoon swims too.

No words. Without you all in this world right now it would be even darker. PLEASE KEEP DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING and protecting all our ele's. We need you, they need you. SENDING LOVE. My heros. To all the CARERS, those who sleep with her STILL EVERY NIGHT, feed her, clothed her, etc. you are proof that there is still love in this world in it's purest form, and for that, I believe you all to be the richest people on the planet. May god bless all of you forever. And I must not forget LAMMIE and the ENTIRE HERD. Your love and acceptance can HEAL ANYTHING, and we humans can only learn from your wisdom and what you have to teach us, as you hold the crown when it comes to what this planet needs most. THANK YOU!

Khanyisa is such a special girl. I'm so glad she's with you & the herd. She's come such a long way in her rehabilitation. Beyond the physical, which was of primary concern, her emotional health and well-being has absolutely blossomed. She's now a happy little elephant with a place within the herd. She has so many loving aunties and a surrogate mum or two. She has special human friends and Lammie, her sheep friend. Khanyisa is much loved by everyone who knows her! I'm blessed to be able to watch her growth and progress. Bless everyone who has nurtured this special little girl elephant! We love you Khanyisa and are looking forward to more adventures with you!💕

@Tisha DelRocco Lammie is a very special creature and is given a loving and important place at the orphanage. Lammie sleeps inside with the little elephants and gets to eat the premium feed given to the young elephants. Baby elephants can go into distress if left alone at night. So, there's a human carer AND Lammie! Lammie is also a herd creature, just like elephants, so she gets much satisfaction from her role as carer and nursemaid. I learned that she's a very special breed of sheep that carries fat stores in their tails. That's why her tail looks like that! And it's very full, indeed! Lammie is well loved and provided for, never fear! 💕🐑🐘💕

Thank you for rescuing these very fortunate elephants! What a lot of loving care you re giving them! I live in Monticello,Iowa and had the privilege of riding on yhe back of an elephant in a saddle. I experienced thid love for a teenage gentle giant. The circus came to our wonderful farm town,so I took my daughter of 15 and my son to ride on the miniature horses and to also get up close standing by the elephant to pet him. I m an animal lover, so the circus employed me to clean up at the close of the circus. We no longer have The Evan s Circis come to our Jonrs County Fairgrounds. I feel saddened as I miss the elephant owner and it s trainer. What a wonderful time we had. We ll never forget the experience of working with the workers and professional trainers. They asked me if I wanted to go with them. I would ve loved to.but mu 30 year old son at the time was and still at 50 is completely disabled and needs my care yet today. I akso care for my daughter, who is 37 years old with 3 sons and without her husband and best friend for 9 years had a terrible domestic abuse home based upheaval. I helped my Son-In-Iaw and her get established in and near my residence. Unfortunely he s waiting arraignment. I d love to fund you but am instead watching my Grandson Braden to see what part in ASACP will do. He is studying at The Ames Iowa Universtu to have an internship as an assitant to a veternarian. He hasn t decided which classification of his choice in what type of animals he wants to be a vetetnarian for yet. He s an honor student and wow! I can t tell him which animals to save. He ll is gentle,exceptionally intelligent and very kind. He comes from a loving and giving family. Myom fed raccoons,badgers and deet by hand along with her ducks,geese,exotic chickens and goats. She taught us to love,care and raise our pets with overbounding love. What a wonderfu l set of parents I had, who were married and stayed together in Christ s love till death did they part.They were our great teachers and were well loved by my Grandchildren. It s my privilege to tell you that he,ll be the best veternarian you ll ever meet. I with my Son-In-Law and my Daughter raised 2 great grandchildren for me. My grandddaughter went to college and has a degree after 4 years as a Psychotherapist with patients in Olympia,Washington. She is like her patents very patient snd givers of college graduates with degrees. They too are professionals in their fields of education. What a joyous thing, to see the whole herd swimming, and Khanyisa safely sheperded in the shallows having the time of her life, blowing bubbles and flinging herself joyously about, splashing...my life is immeasureably enriched just to see this. Had me in tears a number of times.The way Khanyisa has been cared for would make a very important learning documentary to inform social workers who work with human orphans or foster children. This is love the way a family is meant to be.💜💜💜

Even if she had managed to get out of the snare by herself, she would never have survived those wounds without the care she got. Question: How do those fences contain the elephants - they don't appear to be electrified.
@herdelephantorphanage
@herdelephantorphanage 4 года назад
That is so true! There is a fence around the land surrounding both the orphanage and the Jabulani elephant stables land - it is switched on for security at times necessary to protect them. As you know, during their days they are out from sunrise to sunset :-)

HERD Elephant Orphanage South Africa so interesting. I would love to watch a video of their daily routines and also a video of their night time routines. Do they all sleep standing up? Do they get a midnight snack? Are they allowed to roam freely after bedtime? Do they all go to their stable willingly at bedtime, or do some protest because they want to stay outside and roam their land? So many questions LOL

The more i see of human intolarance towards other animals the more angry i get , what was the reason for the mistreatment of such a small elephant to start with, those who inflicted it on thisbcreature should be made to undergo the same sort of treatment until they understand the rules of live and let live, i know that these creatures can cause problems with refguards to farming but that is only because the land was once a place these animals owned? Having had the chance to get to know a full grown male lion i quickly learnt that treated with respect for what and who they are, they quickly become friends and strangly enough for a friendship with humans. Its bad enough that people havevlittle respect for the full grown animals but when they pick on the young, for me they really overstep the mark. This elephant clearly is forming one of those relationships and i am very grateful that there are people who are willing to care and help these wonderful creatures, i thank those involved and know that some where alongnlifes path they will be rewarded.
