Good video, Red ...I'm be getting old I prefer my MTR3-LCD a dedicated CW rig on only 3-bands weighing ~4oz! My knees hurt just thinking of the 817 swiss army knife at almost 10x the weight (39oz) but your point of multimodes + more bands is a good one! 5W on 6m during sE season is fun stuff! see you for another S2S, Steve/wGOAT
Thanks Steve - I'm heading the same direction as you. In time I'll ditch the 817 I'm sure LOL. Thanks for watching and we'll catch you on the next one. 73
Thanks Stu! And I didn't know about that connector. Thanks for the info. Logged in the files in my brain for future use should I have the ability to actually recall it hahaha. Thanks for watching. Love you videos. That blister you popped recently looks heinous!
Well Michael, from your QRZ page it looks like you have a solid collection of gear, but the MTR3b would be a nice addition. I need to get a few satellite contacts under my belt like you. 73
Charlie, thanks for posting this video. I am real close to pulling the trigger and getting an MTR3B. I still enjoy my KX3, as well as having the option for ssb, but I can definitely see having this for my longer hikes as well as traveling. Hope to see you make a video of the MTR3B on a SOTA activation. Thanks again, Mike - N6MKW
Nice thing about 2 hams together is Lee carries the radio and antenna, and I carry all the "just in case" stuff. Plus for SSB a 30 watt amp and a not so light brick battery. You would not like the weight of my SOTA pack
I could certainly go lighter myself. I have been taking two dipoles and extra videography equipment that goes unused. The MTR will be great once I get it figured out. GL out there Lin.
Thanks for the info. I have been doing activations with my FT60R and a N9TAX roll-up Jpole of course VHF only. The combo/has been working pretty well. I have been stumped 2x out of the 24 activations I’ve done this summer (not obtaining 4 contacts) and have spent significant time on remoter peaks in order to acquire 4 QSOs! I recently purchased the FT818ND in order to give me more bands to activate. I am learning Morse but still months away from activations using CW. I plan on buying a MTR3b or SW3b soon. Having a blast doing SOTA, 73!
That's awesome Rex - this is pretty much the path I took as well - VHF only with a j-pole to start out. I still use my FT60r regularly. In fact, I'll be using it for an activation tomorrow morning. I have other HTs but it's still my favorite. Thanks for the comments.
One year passed! I have the MTR4BV2 and a SW3B which I have been using for POTA activations. I figure I’ll get it dialed in from a comfy park bench before windy summits. I decided to stay all VHF for first MG I am at 776 points right now. I can’t wait to switch over to CW/SOTA. It will open up quite a few peaks out of QRP VHF range for me! “73”
Nice vid. Welcome to the MTR3B club =) I got mine for backpacking as well, and I've used it quite a bit. Amazingly great rig for the size/weight/power requirements. Mine is the older model without the LCD. On day trips I use my KX2, but for multi-day trips it's MTR FTW! 73 de WU7H
Great video! What are you going to use to charge that small LIPO battery? This video is right on time because I recently bought the same radio. Now if I could find a set of paddles like you have! DE Scott AE4TC
Yeah, the pico palm is great. Too bad it isn't made anymore. You might try emailing N0SA n0sa@att.net and see if you could get on his waiting list for the one he makes, which I also use. I have a iMAX B6 charger that I'll use for charging that little battery. It charges most LiPo's ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RPzJOKoHhhQ.html 73
Hi Joe - Thanks for watching and dropping a note. You know, I considered the fuse, but when I talked to a bunch of MTR3b users on social media a while back I couldn't find a single one that said that they used one - not that I ran into anyway. These guys were all seasoned SOTA ops who had thousands of activations under their belt without a fuse. In fact some actually used 12v without the fuse or other protection circuit. I don't know, you do make a valid point that I've debated for a while. I guess if I run into an issue I'll track you down and ask you to tell me "I told you so" 😂 I do appreciate the comment and good luck on the airwaves.
There is no audio control and there seems to be a connection problem going strait from the earbuds. This info was added after the video was released. Several hams who use the MTR3b reached out to me after viewing the video and told me they had issues going direct to the radio with buds and the TRS adapter was needed.
