SIX of ONE the Prisoner Appreciation Society - a portrait 

As a 19 year old student I travelled up from Cardiff in 1972 on my oily BSA motorbike to see Portmeirion for the first time having been drawn there by avidly watching the original showings of The Prisoner in the 60's. Upon arrival I parked up in the near empty car park where several chaps were constructing some low walls under the supervision of a slim elderly gentlemen wearing what I understand to be plus fours. The gentleman gave me a kindly look and seemed inquisitive about me this somewhat grubby individual wearing a cheap oily motorcycle jacket obviously with no money to his name; I'm sure he wished to converse with me and enquire as to my desire to visit but I must admit I was a little overawed as I began to realise he was Sir Clough Williams-Ellis and I shrunk away having a feeling of lack of self worth..I've often rued that day and see my failure to chat with him as one of the biggest regrets of my life..now I realise at 67 you have to grasp opportunities whenever presented.

For over 50 years, Portmeirion HAS NOT CHANGED. It retains its' beauty and charm, making it a place where time seems to stand still. "The Prisoner" is a timeless classic and, "The Village" is an ageless place. Be seeing you.

I would say, most people in The Village are very agreeable. A still tongue makes a happy life.

The Prisoner - a classic series if EVER there was one... I saw it in the early 80's and was hooked.. I've loved it ever since.. Shame about the remake...

I knew about this TV show forever, but never actually watched an entire episode. Just the other day, I found the pilot episode on RU-vid and watched it. now, I need to watch all of the episodes. This venue still looks much like on the TV show.

The "Village" was an uncanny metaphor and foretaste of the term "Global Village" that gained such prominence in the 1990's. Yes, it is true, we are all prisoners in the "Global Village" also. All of the insidious mechanisms of social control & mind manipulation that Patrick McGoohan sought to expose in this classic piece of "infotainment" are here today. The Global Village, also, poses as a friendly sphere, while in reality, it is an oppressive prison house run by an unseen oligarchy.

At the very beginning of this video is a eerie combination of musical instruments creating such an unusual sound.

When I watched the show here in the US back in the 60's, "Rover" really scared me.... But I've been a fan ever since. They did show Danger Man in the US but it was call Secret Agent Man. But I remembered him from the pervious show but loved them both.

Growing up in a desert a lot of these shows didn't always come through. I had forgotten about this gem and only seen a few of the episodes. Thanks for this incredible documentary and a great reminder of what I'm going to be doing for the next day and a half :-)

I've been a member of the appreciation society for twenty years. There abouts.

Will There be a convention in 2024? My dad and stepmum just went down to Portmeirion, but there was not a single boyo hanging about the shoreline with a weather balloon. A bit disappointing.

Would dearly love to attend one of the conventions but I'm just too far away. Would really love to watch the live chess game. I don't think the original game was ever finished, was it? Be seeing you.

American Fan since inception in 1968/69. Member of both 6 0f 1 and the later Appreciation Society. Had the goodies that both offered. Never got to the meetings; sad to sat.

Living in G.B/U.K, as a 19 year old in 1984, Channel Four re-ran The Prisoner from September 1984 into February 1985 ... I was absolutely hooked and as mentioned in this video, Portmerion is an hidden idle. Some things to Highlight ; The Prisoner was first shown in 1967 (Portmerion filming in September 66 & March 67) therefor it would have screened in August/September of 1967 into 68. It was mentioned that it was re-run in 1976 on the I.T.V. regions ... I'm sure it was re-run in the early 1970s as well, let me explain myself ... As I mentioned in 1984 as a 19 year old, I had no idea of the series at that time and I was Hooked ! on seeing the two men on the cantilever see-saw and the large eye in the observation room and the closing images of Patrick's face behind bars, the Penny Farthing and Rover surfacing from deep water and streaming away !!! it sparked distant childhood memories of seeing that before ... and yes it was shown in some I.T.V. regions (my one being Granada) in 1972 at children's tea time t.v. 4/5pm. You would think I'm a member of Six of One ... I thought about joining it in 1985 and never got round to it!!!

Good times...Portmeirion and Six of One(in...a past life)!

It is fascinating that the name Six Of One is the name of The Prisoner Appreciation Society... "Six Of One". was the working title of an American situation comedy which has ALSO achieved cult status around the world. That is a program I like to refer to as "Friends". Apparently, no one told Patrick McGoogan life in The Village was gonna be this waaaaaaay... (clap clap clap clap)

The very first episode I saw of The Prisoner was, Do Not Forsake Me, Oh, My Darling. It got me hooked. I know! The least popular episode and McGoohan is hardly in it, yet that episode was what made me want to see more. I thought, "Imagine waking up, not recognizing your face or body and trying to convince people you are someone other than the one they see."

My son raced motocross from age 9. On the rear fender of his 60-80cc bikes was a Big Eye and the phrase "Be Seeing You". No one, and I mean no one, got it. (He did win a lot of races, too)

To really appreciate the controversy of The Prisoner you have to watch the Dangerman/Secret Agent series first

You can buy the globe ("ball") chair for Number 2 for about $1,000, brand new. It was created by a Finnish designer in 1963. The next year, and egg-shaped version of the globe chair (ovalia egg chair) was created by a Danish designer in 1968. This chair can also be bought for around $1,000.

N°6 had a big influence on my youth and all life : example : I asked for and did get for my car the number 612 ART ; 6 december being my birthdate did you get that when N°6 meets N°12 , in fact N°6 meets number 1 . 2 in that épisode

i met a man at a party once who was wearing a stripy tea shirt I thought he looked like a character from the prisoner so i said to him you must be number five and he said funny you should say that because i used to work on that programme and i wrote two episodes it turned out to be Ian Rakoff

Looks like the place has had a lick of paint, last time i was there several years ago it looked run down with very little reference to the Prisoner.

i just love the idea of it all having been in his head, there was no village just his own paranoia, i would not have been disappointed had this been the eventual conclusion instead of the final episode ending which had Patrick going into hiding for two weeks, the escape with the dwarf is the only thing contradicting my interpretation, the pulling off the mask to reveal his own face for me dictated the one and only conclusion.

How many “units” is one admission please? ❤

I want information: because that's all there really ever was, is, or will be. A. Einstein once (perhaps more than once) said that we are all prisoners of our own ideas. I thought for a while that if I believed that, I would be a prisoner of his ideas, but now I think that we are all prisoners of everyone else's ideas and are only free in our own ideas, which is only an idea, and the idea that an idea can be mine and mine alone is really a matter of probability - since someone else almost certainly has the same idea that I have, however rare that idea might be. Yet I have the idea that I am free to change my ideas, but the fact remains that that is only an idea- and so I am back to square one. Pawn to King four? Really now! We need to know which King we are in reference to - if we are referring to our opponent's King, we must be also referring to his/her pawn - since we are not allowed to move our pawns backwards, or move their pawns at all, except to remove them in an exchange. But the rules, the pieces, the moves, the strategies, and this conversation, are all just ideas. I shall now set you all free from these ideas by typing no more in this comment (thank you) but will simply fade away with this question remaining: are numbers only ideas, or are numbers more real than other ideas. This is a bad representation of people who love the prisoner! They ain’t all like this lot jeeeeez, what did u do hold auditions for the most geeky uncool oddball nerd type peeps u could find or what..

The village itself is indeed beautiful...but the series is a total dead loss.......don't believe me? Just take a look at the band of Bozo's who make up the "Appreciation" Society. What on earth is there to appreciate about the series? McGoohan himself said he only wanted it to run for 6 or 7 episodes (And that first half dozen were at least interesting) but after that it was just a mish mash of idiotic, half backed ideas all lumped together to try and get the series over the finish line. I like McGoohan as an actor, but in this series he stands out only for his inability to successfully manage a TV series. All these people are "Appreciating" is a load of total & utter rubbish.
