I'm 68, raised 2 children and never drank a drop since my first child came into my life. Like you, I understand the Bible did not condemn the alcohol but the overuse. I, however, did not want my children to become drunkards so I made the choice to refrain from any type of strong drink. It worked. They too are following my example. God bless your ministry.

This is a very good message.......Alcohol and Depression. Alcohol is a depressant. It can slow vital functions, leading to slurred speech, slowed reaction time and impaired memory. While some people may drink to relax, the effects of alcohol can actually include increased anxiety and stress.

I never drank until about two years ago. The first year I started drinking wasn't bad but this last year has been awful. I started drinking to block out my depression. I thought it helped but it only made things worse. I have done and said things this past year that are so out of character. Every time I drink I wake up feeling guilty, ashamed, mortified, and embarrassed. I am praying that Jesus frees me from this. It's causing so much pain and trouble in my life.

Hi my sister in Christ, the Holy Spirit is with you to win this fight. He wants you free for more freedom from sin. God will not condemn, criticize or judge you. The enemy of your soul does that until you recognize where those thoughts are coming from, then you can just ignore them all the while you continue in your walk with Christ. Even as you battle you can rejoice confidently bc your ultimate trust is in the written Word of God that God honors above His name.

Im grateful to the Lord delieving me from the spirit of alcoholism" i fought it for yrs, i grew up with a alcoholic father and he would let me drink at any age. So i was hooked from a young age. But i pleaded with the Lord to deliever me for almost 35 yrs. It finally came and im delievered, but i used AA at times, but i still wanted a drink, well i havnt been to AA in yrs and i have no desire ...iam free in Christ, thank you Lord for answering my prayer and my i be a witness of your grace and freedom. I agree with this pastor, alcohol has no place in a believers life, because it sends a wrong message to the new believers, most new believers are coming out of a life of alcohol and drugs , and they are looking for answers from that life style, well church we need clean up are house first, i see to many churches ok with drinking, well its a new day, we know the facts about alcohol and its not good, if you want the blessing of the Lord in your life, i know i do! Believers take the high road!

I'm only hearing opinions and no biblical basis for this position. I don't drink alcohol but the Bible is very clear that it is permitted. The Bible does, however, speak against drunkenness. I think we should let the Bible speak for itself on this and every other topic. If you are convicted to not drink alcohol or you don't as a matter of perception or you struggle with alcohol, then you would be wise to stay away from it. But if you can take a small drink now, stop and go years without even thinking about having another, then that is permissible, just as long as you don't cause offense or cause a brother or sister in Christ to stumble.
@Shadow-hv2vp

The Bible says the heart is deceitful above all things . Why on earth are you drinking alcohol. I have yet to hear one common sense answer on why someone needs to drink alcohol. The health benefits of alcohol are few to none. You simply do not need to consume alcohol. Also why would I open the door to be drunk or intoxicated. The Bible says Satan comes to kill steal and destroy. You can say you won't get drunk but how do you know that. That's the same thing I hear alcoholics say. There's a reason they call alcohol spirits..... Its a demonic stronghold. So it's more than just opinion, it's wisdom, and biblical common sense.

Alcohol in small amounts is ok, only if one can do it in small amounts, however I can't drink because I was addicted to alcohol and once a drunk, always a drunk, its best not to start. He mentions anti-depressants, I say be careful, medications can be addicting as well. I was suicidal and was put on anti-depressants, and then one week I forgot to take them and realized I wasn't depressed anymore, so I stopped taking them.

I was hoping this message gave biblical reasons not to drink at all. I wouldn't call myself an addict but perhaps I am. I say this because I don't like giving up anything I like. My drinking picked up when I became allergic to starch. I had to give up all breads, pastas, breaded fried foods, cakes, donuts, cookies. This was before low carb diets became popular. I remember stopping drinking because I started a new medication that you couldn't drink with and I said oh well as long as I don't have to give up chocolate. It was no struggle to stop drinking. I didn't like it but I have never had a struggle giving up what I shouldn't have. I just pouted about it. I have been off the medicine. And I went back to drinking. Drinking for me was the same as having chocolate. I didn't have it every day. I just had it when I wanted. Which could be a couple days in a row or once after 3 or 4 months. But there is a part of me that would like to not drink at all. I would like to give up something I like. But at the same time I don't want to have to give up one more thing I like. All the reasons the pastor gave don't apply to me. I'm older and when I do drink I have one glass at home. My kids and grandkids live thousands of miles away. I don't have all those other options for drinks or even foods as the pastor mentioned in this message. I pretty much can only have meat, seafood, low carb dairy, water, wine and distilled alcohols. Grape juice is too high in sugar having 300% more sugar than wine and other alcohols have no sugar. I can't have stevia or any other zero calorie sweeteners. Biblical reasons would apply to everyone. When I read the bible I understand it as a time for fasting and being sober and a time for feasting and drinking. God gave us wine Psalm 104:15 Numbers 18:12 Deuteronomy 33:28. What I see is being full of food all the time and being full of wine all the time is gluttony and drunkedness. But over eating and over drinking during Harvest as Boaz did during the harvest celebration before Ruth laid at his feet is not being a glutton or a drunk. I don't eat a lot nor do I drink a lot. But if the bible really encourage anywhere not to drink at all it would be no issue for my last drink to have been my last drink. I do think it is better for health not to drink. I'm just not convinced.

Encouraging people to turn to Dr prescribed narcotics instead of drinking a beer or two doesn’t make much sense to me but everyone has different convictions and yes you could probably find a scripture to fit what you believe the Bible is saying for whatever you believe. I’m just using common sense. I wouldn’t encourage anyone that has had a problem with alcohol to drink but if you’re not drinking to get drunk and it helps calm you then I think it’s a bit better than taking narcotics. No matter what you believe I think we always should pray and ask the Holy Spirit to guide us and direct us and to always help us to make the right decisions in our lives while convicting us of our shortcomings and delivering us from anything that does not please GOD.

The Bible says, "No drunkard will inherit the kingdom of God." The Greek word translated as drunkard is methusos, and it means to get tipsy. Websters says, tipsy means slightly intoxicated. Why risk eternity in Heaven with Christ for alcohol. As far as Timothy being told he could drink for medicinal purposes doesn't really apply today; we have grocery stores and pharmacies that sell all the medicine we need. Don't drink; you won't need to worry about drunk driving. Don't drink; you won't need to worry about becoming an alcoholic. Don't drink and you won't have to worry about drunkenness disqualifying you from eternity in Heaven. Also, it is obviously a bad witness.

Drinking alcohol doesn't mean being alcoholic. Don't forget part of the wages John Calvin got was some gallons of wine. The bible is just fine. It doesn't condemn drinking but drunkenness. Don't go too far or you are adding rules that are not from God. Drinking or not depends on situation. It should never become a standard rule.

Not defending getting hammered but a few questions. Were people in pain or needing medicinal help at the wedding where the wine ran out. Even if it was mixed with water people were at least getting tipsy. Also, high priest couldn’t drink at all but Jesus partook in wine. The Pharisees even accused him of being a “winebibber” So it’s not so cut and dry. Again, not defending getting wasted. Drunkards can’t enter the kingdom. But what is a drunkard exactly? A buzz? Or wasted? Or being an alcoholic? Is a drunkard someone who has 2 beers on a Friday night? I don’t know for sure

Good comparison. Being fat and being drunk are very similar! I would know I've been both. It's just so sad that its typical for children in America to become overweight. Since we are pointing out addiction I'll say, it's not typical for children in America to become alchoholic's. I would think that would be more an adult thing to deal with the effect's of obesity.

To add a little nuance: it appears like ancient BAC levels at the Passover from 4 cups of 2-3% wine would’ve been between 0.02 BAC and 0.04 BAC. Just enough for slight euphoria but not enough for mental impairment nor physical impairment.

Instead of going to a bar, join one of the many modern gyms where you can work out to handle stress. Most of my parents and extended family used alcohol for their "recreation" because there were none to little "commercial exercise" facilities like the modern gyms when they grew up and matured in the 1940s, 50s and 60s. Modern gyms began to "explode" in the late 1970s and early 80s. So this gives a viable modern option for recreation.
