Big shout out, again, to Jason for the loan iofg this shiny new Ball. I like it. Quite a lot. But I can understand how any or all of the six points listed might put others off. Ball are a bit weird generally speaking, but if you are OK with their particular form of weirdness, then I can see one of these working long term in your collection. I wonder if I can find one for the same price that Jason did...... Cheers, Jody

There are quite a few Alixpress shops that sells odd sized straps. Maikes and Hemsut both makes high quality leather, nylon, sail clothe, etc. for cheap. I have many of them and they are on par, if not better, than some big brand names costing three or four times more.

Maybe there's a chance they didn't bother water resistance testing it so it would keep the cost down? Maybe we should test the WR (but remove the insides first!)! But let's also not forget that GMTs are mainly meant for people traveling, like pilots, so WR isn't up there on the priorities?

I've been intrigued by this brand for years, but it's true that there's always some styling element that feels a bit much (for my tastes). I generally think the necessary block-y design is fine - I'm more of a field watch type, anyway - but then there will be something super ornate/old-fashioned that clashes. That said, a lot of that evaluation is influenced by the price. Those quirks look a lot better at ~$600 than at $1K+.
@CapaNoisyCapa
@CapaNoisyCapa 2 года назад
That's a matter of taste and there's no right or wrong here. But I generally describe Ball watches with an old Brazilian saying: their watches are uglier than beating up your own mother. Or another one: One do not discusses taste, one just laments.

I have to give props to Shopworn, last year I purchased a Cuervo Y Sobrinos 600m diver and something was up with the movement they swapped it out and the new watch was on my wrist within a week. The manufacturer site was still selling the model for over 5k and I purchased it for a fraction of that. Watch came with the original box which is a large wood cigar humidor and came with some of the papers too. Won’t hesitate to purchase from them again.

Hey you reviewed a watch that I own! I purchased the blue dial reference from Shop Worn when it was $650 USD. They then lowered it to $599 later on and they price matched it for me in five minutes with no questions asked. I always fine myself gravitating towards my Balls...compared to my other watches. The only thing that bothered me at first with this watch was the WR, but then I remembered that trains don't go under water.

You walked right up to one of the reasons why it was cheap, but did not take a swing. The model being discontinued means it's a few years old--cutting into the total 12ish year half life of the Tritium. I think that would be the tipping point for me with the other negatives. Of course it didn't stop me from getting a Ball from jomashop previously. That one had better WR and 20mm lugs, so the tradeoff was worth it for these quirky steampunk pieces.

That watch line "trainmaster" is the dress watch line that is why it is smaller than usual and has low water resistance. You are confusing water tightness with depth capacity. Most dive watches fail at depth because the case deforms and interferes with the movement not by leaking. You can have a very watertight watch that fails depth at 20 meters. You can change the depth capacity of an SKX by half, just by changing the thickness of the case back. I love this hobby. Cheers

A dive watch at depth does not fail first because their thick, stainless steel case deforms, they will fail for one of two reasons - excessive pressure causing the seals to fail and water ingress, or the crystal will shatter at extreme depths. Yes, that’s right, the watch crystal is more susceptible to pressure than stainless steel - I’m not even a genius like you and I worked that out.
@Keith-gg5nh

@@stuartcole4845 Stuart, You’re such a nice guy. Where did you get you engineering degree? O-rings seldom if ever fail from over pressurization. They fail from age, heat exposure or from taking a set for an extended period of time at high pressure then being depressurized, but of course you already knew that. Check out the attached videos. You will get to see watches fail under pressure. Eventually the crystals break but long before that the case and case-back deforms. Live and learn and try to be a little bit nicer. I think as far as ball goes I’ll stick with the non Arabic Engineer III. I have the Marvelight and at 40mm it’s perfect. The 43mm is clunky in my opinion, and with the 20mm strap makes it super flexible. I wouldn’t buy one full retail as they do have a tendency to depreciate substantially. I think they’re awesome, mine is the chronometer and of course, like so many other ball watches, a limited edition. I really can’t stand the look of the Arabic numerals, great review again, and I think if you’re okay with the 40mm 38 isn’t really a stretch at all. There are so many great options in that range.

30M water resist is sensible for a TRAIN watch it needs to be moisture proof only and the 19mm band is irrellevant being titanium and a purpose built device why would you undermine the integrity of the TOOL by fiddling with straps. That is a literal opinion on form following function. Marketing wise yes to both niggles I suppose it is a recreational watch afterall.

There is something else to consider if you are looking at a discontinued Ball watch. How old is it. I bought one on Ebay and it was so old that the tritium was fading and not very bright. I have 2 other tritium watches (a T-100 and a T-25). The ball was much darker than my Marathon Navigator. I could barely see it in the dark. I tried to reach out to Marathon about the cost of new tritium tubes. The employee that emailed me back claimed to be looking into the price for a couple weeks, but never actually told me the price. I like it... No niggles for me, it works well, looks great, comfortable size and weight, date complication.

Looks a bit like my old Vostok. At £60, I was happy with those super angular digits. For £600, I’m not so sure.

Nothing but positive experiences with ShopWorn. Most have no signs of handling.

I own several tritium lume watches. I hesitate to buy premium brand tritium watches or used tritium watches because the tubes really do dim after a few years and are significantly faded at 12 years. A Ball watch with exhausted tritium tubes is pretty much "done"...

I wonder how old the tritium is. It decays… probably not too bad yet. To an American, Ball means canning jars first and satellites second and watches a distant third. At least to me. The canning jars and satellites were originally the same company; I don’t think that the watches were.

Odd but beautiful…For the price, how can ya go wrong? I’m sure the owner will enjoy the watch.

In 50 years when it is the trendy thing to do to wear your Ball watch when riding first class on the hyper loop our heirs will be cursing us for not picking this up for $600 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Super watch that none of the negatives would stop me buying, I love the quirky looks.

Great looking watch. No issue in my opinion with the dimensions. A collector needs variety in their collection and this Ball is a great option for a tremendous price.

Could you compare the Seiko Sharp Edge to lower priced 'Do it all' Seikos please? I really like it's dial and movement, but not sure about the details if that worth the extra price. Thanks
