Ralph Vaughn Williams has been one of my favorites since being in UCO Chamber Singers. We performed his "Serenade to Music" with Dr. Webster, Pamela Green and others soloist from faculty. Learned alot from them plus Kay Holt, and Kay Creed. Playing Clarinet in MPS and private lessons with you gave me a love for playing instruments I share with my students at Sooner Elementary in Moore. Had around 15 Sixth Graders join the Band program this past year. Thank you for sharing.🥰
I have listened to several version of "Six." Yours is by far the best of all. The Clarinet seems to allow for a quicker, more deft interpretation of the score. Your pianist was also fabulous. A great recording, too. Fantastic on all fronts!
1. Adagio ("Lovely on the Water'" -- 0:01, 2. Andante sostenuto ("Spurn Point") -- 1:33, 3. Larghetto ("Van Diemen's Land") -- 3:03, 4. Lento ("She Borrowed Some of Her Mother’s Gold") -- 4:30 5. Andante tranquillo ("The Lady and the Dragon") -- 5:55, 6. Allegro vivace ("As I walked over London Bridge") -- 7:47
Thank you so much for your very kind compliment, Robin. Have you heard my other RU-vid video of this piece? It's an even earlier live concert performance tape, from 1987.
David Vandewalker Thank you very much, David. As I was performing this work, we had beautiful images of the English countryside projected on a gigantic movie screen above the stage, behind me. We did this twice -- first on Friday night and then again on the following Sunday afternoon, to packed audiences. It was part of a big APSU music department fundraiser, featuring our music faculty, entitled "I Hear the World Singing". Thanks for listening, and for the compliment!
A beautiful performance Stephen You sound very English in your performance Thank you! I have a printed copy from about 50 years ago and it is written for both A and B flat clarinets. My late teacher James Joseph, principal clarinet of the Northern Sinfonia Orchestra told me that Vaughan Williams planned to write a clarinet concerto and Sidney Fell went to Wales to see the composer every two weeks. What happened to that project who knows. ? Bill. UK
Thank you, Bill -- I'm glad you enjoyed my performance! You might want to listen to another "Six English Studies" RU-vid performance of mine. You may even like it better than this one! I performed it in a 1987 live recital. Give it a try , and let me know which one you prefer. Thanks again, Bill...
Thank you so much, Emily. I really can't recall the specific paintings I used -- it's been several years ago since I published this video. (I have published a total of 331 RU-vid videos, thus far). I Google searched for photos and paintings of the English countryside -- art that effectively reflected the rustic charm and innocence of common folk. Please consider subscribing to my RU-vid channel -- it's absolutely FREE!
What mouthpiece did you use back then? Just curious how you're going about achieving such depth and unhindered clarinet sound (passed th voicing of notes).
