As everyone’s getting ready for Six Zero’s #TripleBlackDiamond (a.k.a., #TheWillinator ), I thought it was worth re-examining where it all started: Six Zero’s Double Black Diamond. This is one of the most popular thermoformed paddles of all time, but is it still relevant? I definitely think so, but super curious what everyone else thinks!

I would be curios what would be good places to add weight on these paddles except for the two that you pointed out.
@MatthewKPickleball
@MatthewKPickleball Месяц назад
Weighting the bottom corners like I described helps with control. Putting weight on the sides generally helps with stability and a little more power. And then weight at the top helps with power. Hope that helps!

Die Hard Fan here. I love my 16mm and 14mm DBD. I am looking forward to their future 14mm releases. Thanks for the review!

Nice! What's the biggest difference with how the 14mm plays? How's the pop?
@scottla1113
@scottla1113 Месяц назад
@@MatthewKPickleball The biggest difference to me is the increased hand speed and the slight increase in pop. If I had to quantify it, I would say 25% more pop in the 14mm. I noticed my control wasn't there when I first switched over. I "softened my hands" up and the adjustment was fairly quick after about a month of play.

Would like comparison of J2H and Black Diamond, as both are carbon fiberglass combinations.

After trying out the Ruby today after 3 months of using my DBD - I can say for a fact that the DBD is just as good if not better than the Ruby. And yes, it is a power paddle with great spin and has less control. I also use lead tape at the lower end of my paddle.

You just hit it with this video. Well done and great transparency.

Appreciate it! Not everyone agrees about its power classification, but it’s still a heavy hitter in my book!

@@MatthewKPickleball it truly is and its great for drives and topsin!!! I absolutely love my DBD. I was just happy I was able to make an informed decision about sticking with my DBD after giving the Ruby a test run in a match today. Almost similar in feel and play but the edge still goes to the DBD for the power feel in drives and serving.

@MathewKPickleball thoughts about the 14 mm DBD? I have the 16 mm DBD and I see it as an all around paddle. Your Thoughts on the 14mm?

I haven’t gotten to play with the 14mm. 😭

My understanding is the DBD has never really been considered a power paddle. Its usually listed as a control paddle or all-court paddle. I personally owned the DBD and it was the least powerful paddle I had ever used and in fact is why I got rid of it. It just lacked power too much. I'm wondering if you are confusing power with pop. It is definitely a poppy paddle.
@MatthewKPickleball
@MatthewKPickleball Месяц назад
It def used to be considered a powerful or power paddle when it was first released. A theory I’ve seen float around is that later and later batches became more muted. But that’s just internet talk. And pop is def part of the attributes of a “power paddle” IMO, but your distinction between “pop” on shots where you don’t use the mechanics of your body to generate power through a swing and then “power” when you do use your body to swing especially for baseline hits is helpful. I talk about this a lot in some of my other videos as well. I could have been clearer in this video’s discussion for sure. But my intent was to convey this paddle takes effort to control because of it being a powerful paddle (which includes aspects of pop and driving power) IMO and not a control-focused paddle.
@duanehensley8835
@duanehensley8835 Месяц назад
@@MatthewKPickleball I'm wondering if you're confusing the Black Diamond Power paddle with the DBD control paddle. I owned both paddles and the Black Diamond was way more poweful than the DBD. I currently have the Ruby and it too is way more powerful than the DBD.
@MatthewKPickleball
@MatthewKPickleball Месяц назад
Never hit with that one! But the DBD came out when Gen1 paddles were still the most used paddles, and I believe lots of folks categorized them as power/powerful paddles at the time. I think PBStudio even made that distinction and has since re-categorized the DBD as all-court and maybe even control in his eyes. But I’d have to dig through old reviews to confirm. Regardless, I think it’s fairly labeled all-court that leans towards power in today’s landscape. But it’s certainly a subjective label, so you can def disagree.
@MatthewKPickleball
@MatthewKPickleball Месяц назад
Even Six Zero currently labels the DBD as control on their site, so you’re def not wrong with your thoughts. But I would be super hesitant to recommend as a control paddle myself for all the reasons I state in the vid.

DBD is all court. Needs lead at the bottom corners for sure. Engage Pursuit Pro have more power and pop.
@duanehensley8835
@duanehensley8835 Месяц назад
All the things you dexcribed about the DBD, hard to control; needing lead tape; too many pop ups, has all to do with "pop" not power.
