Great video. I normally use the small base camp but I’ve been considering the xs... just ordered one based on both your review and this comparison. Thanks again! 👍🏻🇬🇧🇺🇸

I've been going back and forth between the extra small and the small North Face Base Camp over the last few weeks and your videos have really helped me make a decision. I will be using it for 2-3 day, maybe the occasional 4 days, trips and I don't need much other than clothes and toiletries, maybe my iPad and a book, so I think I have decided that the extra small is more than enough for me and I like the fact that I can use it as carry on next time I'm flying somewhere. Thanks for your great reviews!

Really great review thanks I like the size comparison on your back that helped me realise the TNF small is to big for a reliable carry on without risking being told it needs to go in the hold xs it is for me thanks again

thanks so much... great comparison.... the xs seems actually big and can pack many things but still being compact enough for less stressful travel... Maybe have the duffle for most packed items and then a smaller organized sling/tech bag for efficient travel..

I'm a Dad with little Children. I bought the XS NF DB instead of a nappy bag. Here's why: Cheaper, more durable, fits in the Baby Jogger Select basket, and if I need to put other things like groceries, or whatever into the pram's basket, this duffle goes on my back. I can fit more than nappy items in it, I can wipe it out, put in spare clothes for the other Children, and it also has a matching large toiletry bag that I purchased with it for a secure zip-up parent console on the pram's handle bar. When it is no longer needed for a nappy bag, it will be used for camping luggage. I intend to buy a few more like this. Think smart guys, if you are in the same boat as me, or have a partner that could use a new nappy bag to go with the pram as mentioned, then there are other colours as well. Get a matching large toiletry bag for her too as a parent console. You'll get lovin' for weeks to come.

Is there any world the Base Camp Small could be used for a personal item? If you don’t fill it and cinch it down? I just feel the small is more versatile for my uses. But if it won’t work as a personal item then it reduces its value to me

Hi Chris! Does the handle of the Patagonia hurts your back? I’d like the 40L black hole but I’m in doubt for the handles in the back. Thank you!

Hi, Chris. Do you think the 50 L small Base Camp Duffel can hold a 25 in tennis racket? I am not sure about the sizes cuz I want to use it for gym and preferably tennis. Appreciate if you could answer that :)
@ChrisU
@ChrisU 6 лет назад
Hi! That's a great question and a tough one to answer! I'm guessing you could fit the head of the racket in the duffel but the racket would not go completely in the bag as the bag measures about 21 inches. If you positioned the racket so the handle was pointed up out of the bag, behind your head when carrying the bag on your back it may work. Again, this is just a guess based on a normal sized 25" racket and the size of TNF Base Camp Duffel S. Hope this helps and I have to add that TNF Base Camp duffels are awesome bags. Take care!

Have you ever had any problems using the xs as a personal item?
@ChrisU
@ChrisU 6 лет назад
Hi David! I've had no issues using the XS as a personal item. I actually used it this past weekend on American Airlines and Spirit Airlines, both times using as my personal item and placing under the seat. I've also used on Delta, United and Southwest placing under the seat. As always, your experience may vary but I feel this is the perfect bag to use for your personal item. Take care!

Hey Chris, which one has the thicker material? Appreciate if you can answer that :)
@ChrisU
@ChrisU 6 лет назад
Hi Chui Zhen Cheong! To me, The North Face duffels seem to made of a thicker material. Not to take anything away from the Patagonia Black Hole duffel because it is also made of a very durable material. I feel that both the Patagonia and TNF will stand up to years of use and abuse. Take care!

Which material wears better, Black Hole or Base Camp? I want a material that doesn't scuff up or mark too easily. Thanks.
@ChrisU
@ChrisU 4 года назад
Hey Laser Sharp! Both bags have held up very well with overall minimal scuffs, etc. I have more miles in the Base Camp so it's showing a bit more wear, plus I've beat it up pretty good over the years. My Black Holes still look almost new. Really hard to say which may scuff/mark up easier, as both have done well for me. Color may come into play, as darker bags will probably show less wear, scuffs, etc. Sorry I couldn't be more help : )

Which bag do you think is best for kids sports?
@ChrisU
@ChrisU 6 лет назад
Hi Elizabeth! In my opinion, I would go with either the North Face Base Camp duffel XS or S. The Small holds quite a bit more, so it would depend on how much equipment and items you need to pack. The XS would be great for smaller kids and if you were packing extra clothes, uniform, shoes, shin guards and similar type items. The S is a probably my favorite "all around" bag. Hope this helps! Take care!

Hi Chris! I am planning to use Base Camp XS as carry on luggage. The carry on size is 55x40x23 cm (22x14x9 inches) and the bag has 45x28x28 cm (18x11x11 inches) so on height is to big. Do you think this shoul be a problem taking into consideration the other sizes are much smaller than the limit? Cheers
@ChrisU
@ChrisU 5 лет назад
Hi Fitoiu Fabian! In my opinion and experience, you should have no problem. I’ve used it completely full as my carry-on on Delta Airlines. I’ve also used as my personal item, placed under the seat in front of me, on multiple airlines. Wasn’t completely full when used as my personal item though. I would have no hesitation using it as the bag is flexible yet durable. Hope this helps. Take care!

So I want to get one for a personal item bag, but am unsure whether the small will squish under the seat. I know the xs would be more ideal, but I waited too long to get the color I wanted in xs, so I’m still debating. Would the small squish enough under the seat?
@ChrisU
@ChrisU 5 лет назад
Hi Rachel! Great but tough question! The XS I can speak from experience using as a personal item on multiple airlines. It worked great and I had no issues. I've not had the opportunity to try the S as a personal item. Normally using a soft sided bag like the Base Camp duffel gives you some flexibility as long as you don't pack too much into the bag. But I'm hesitant to say it would work because I can't back it up with personal experience. Take care!

Can All three of these bags be taken on as carry-on bags?
@ChrisU
@ChrisU 5 лет назад
Hi Jesse! My short answer is yes but... The last time I flew back in April, I saw 3 Black Hole 60L duffels being used as carry-ons. Definitely flexibility in a soft sided bag and, to me, the key is not overpacking the bag. I personally would have no issues using any of these bags as my carry-on. Take care!

Do you think the 60 L is too large for a smaller woman?
@ChrisU
@ChrisU 6 лет назад
Hi cheyzah! That's a great question! Since it's a 60 L bag, it is a larger bag and you can pack a lot in it. In saying that, the bag can become heavy. The bag carries it's weight well though and if you're used to carrying a heavy bag, it's not a problem. 2 other options to consider are The North Face Base Camp Small duffel and the Patagonia Black Hole 45 L duffel. Both smaller but not by too much. I haven't had a chance to look at the 45 L Patagonia but it's on my list. I apologize for the long answer but depending on how much you pack and the weight of the bag, you might not find it too large. Hope this helps. Take care!

Do you know if a 15.6/16 inch laptop could fit in the base camp xs, with about two days worth of clothes?

Hi Nico K! Yes, a 15.6/16 inch laptop will fit in the North Face Base Camp Duffel XS. There is no dedicated laptop pocket though. Hope this helps. Take care!

Great stuff, I ultimately decided on the Patagonia 60 L insteand of the TNF Small, because it's a) bigger and more importantly b) has handles which the TNF used to have but have been eliminated with recent(?) design update. Again...great work Chris!

Hi opentoesandals! Thank you!!! Can definitely be a touch decision but all great reasons to choose the Patagonia 60L! All around awesome bag! Take care!
