Perspective is everything and your perspective on this is very helpful. Amazing how happiness and purpose can determine so many successes. Proud of you for what you’ve created in all your woodworking spaces!

Love your perspective and something I will definitely remember when I get frustrated when I feel like I "need" a big shop when it is probably more of a "want". Thanks again for sharing what you do and have gone through!!

This is very insightful, and honestly great content. I've struggled with some of these questions too, and decided that I'm happy with my 2.5-car shop and wet/hot/snowy cars. I think also you've somehow managed to not fall too deeply into the YT algorithm-grind-a-thon because your joy is derived from the creating of durable, quality furniture/cabinetry... at least that's how I perceive your situation. Happiness I've found is a choice, not a condition you find yourself in, and you appear to understand that. It took me 45 years to learn that, you you're far ahead of the curve - good job, dude.

Great video thanks for sharing this! The only small thing I would mention for the sake of your viewers is that if you run a small business out of your garage you 100% do need business insurance as your home insurance won't cover a lot of things that could happen to you or your customers. Otherwise really interesting look at the costs and pros/cons of getting a larger space!
@FortressFineWoodworks
@FortressFineWoodworks 10 месяцев назад
Thats very true here in the US. I think my point was that in order to even step foot in the warehouse, they required me to have insurance. But in my house, it was really up to my own decision. Thanks for your insight!

Agreed and most HOA’s and a lot of municipalities (including small towns/cities) have rules/codes that bar you from having customers meet you in your home business. Also from a tax perspective, running a business out of your garage can get complicated if you actually park a car inside it and the same goes for any interior space used as an office and computer equipment that you also use for non-business activities that required for the business which will definitely be needed for design and probably accounting and possibly payroll if you were to have even a part time assistant.

Now that I’ve gotten through the whole video….I really enjoyed this. It was a great video. I do remember being quite happy with my old shop. And thinking how grand it was. I have a tendency to cram even my large shop full of stuff and make it feel small. But now that I do it as a “business”… the expectations are different. And sometimes the joy is sucked out. But mainly…. I enjoy every day that I get to be in my shop. I would love to make it more efficient. I think I could take it further as a business if I was more organized. And… I’m drooling over your jointer. Thant thing looks amazing. I have an old delta 6” jointer I bought from marketplace. I love it… but I hope one day to get a larger one. I’ve spent a lot of time in my “business” making money… only to spend it on the next tool. But I’ve come to the point where I have the tools I need to make just about anything I want. great video. Look forward to seeing more.

I can see why your 6 inch jointer would make you happy but leave you wanting a bit more capacity. But if you mill the boards to rough width first, its not too often that you need over 6 inches.

ROFL at the "storing lumber on your spouse's side of the bed". I store my baltic birch plywood behind my dresser in my bedroom. I don't have room in my current garage shop. But I'm single. For me, the answer is halfway in-between. I currently have a one-car garage that has to be both a garage for one of my cars AND my workshop for both working on cars and playing with wood. That doesn't work. So I am building a new garage with attached living quarters next door. Comfortable space for three cars and a lift plus plenty of room to make sawdust. If I need more room a car or two can get booted out into the driveway for a while. And yup, I am going to be DEEP in bed with a bank again. Sigh. Sure was nice having a paid off house for a while... The new living quarters are going to be nice too. going from 220sf garage and 770sf house to 1000sf garage and 1300sf house. I'm keeping my current place as a rental property. And the new garage will be properly insulated and air-conditioned. I'm in Florida, so that is knda important. Really loving your channel!

I know you have a lot of $$$ invested in your business, so don't take this the wrong way. While the cost of living in Colorado is 31% higher than the national average, it is still 35-40% cheaper than where I live.....California. I wish you nothing but the best and I really enjoy your videos. I am not a patron, but I try to watch all your videos.

I went from 8300 commercials building to a 2700 square ft in my back yard on an acre . Best thing i ever did . My house payment is much less than my shop rent. Unfortunately i dont have enough power to run my timesaver. Buying auction equipment is the way to go its so cheap if your patient.

I’m laughing. Im at 1:53 in. Your one car garage looks about the size of my old shop. I don’t know that I actually could have put a car in my 1 car garage. I know a car never went into it. It was always used for other stuff. For me… it was a shop. That was 2012/2013. Fast forward and I’m super blessed to have a 35x32 shop that is attached to my house. And it’s not a garage. So no pesky garage doors. And not chance of someone asking to park a car in it. LOL. I laugh because I recently had someone over in my shop and made the comment I wanted to build cabinets for my shop…. And then later for my laundry room. Maybe one day my kitchen. He told me my shop was not “big enough” to do cabinets. Not sure what the heck he was thinking. So when I see you in your car garage I laugh at his comment even more.

Happiness is happenstance ? Joy is a gift from Your creator Corey ? I come to give you life and give it abundantly? I am a finish carpenter that came to that cross road? Rent in Northern Calif can be nutz ! So I bought a 3/4 ton van , cabinet saw in the shop/ garage, a Dewalt portable table saw with stand ( I hv no idea how a carpenter works at ground level ?) . Outfitted my van ( Sold my truck) and run with crazy nice Festool Miter saw & stand ( I just bought it and hv a big Makita miter saw also w/ stand & best fence system) . Akibus custom tool belt and my pack outs ! I build a lot of cabinets but not full kitchens ( no room) and I no longer paint ( with some exceptions which is will I be paid properly ). Doors ( you should advertise doors brother builders who do customs are always looking ) plus with a domino 500 you can build great doors ! I guess I am stating I like a shop , maybe a big shop ? Just scares me ! You your young ! You guys should look at land and build a cozy 2500 sq ft or 1800 is plenty ! You guys are going to be fine! Though finding your purpose ( I mean who called you to carpentry ; you are a finish carpenter) is what grounded me and set joy in my being ! God Bless you and yours !
