The lyrics of ’Stars‘ is based on the poem of the same name by Sara Teasdale, published in 1920. For us, a probably unintended layer of meaning can be read into it: that of the angel babies (German: star children). Miscarriages, stillbirths and the death of newborns are insufficiently visible fates, which is why we dedicate our video to this topic. We wanted to include the work of a visual artist and came across Lydia Wassner-Hauser, who has created a glass work of art for a memorial for angel babies in Eberstalzell, Austria. Through these elements, music and image meet here on another level, for Ēriks Ešenvalds set ’Stars‘ to music for women's voices and tuned glasses. And just as fragile as the glass is the young life itself.

Der Text von Stars basiert auf dem gleichnamigen, 1920 veröffentlichten Gedicht von Sara Teasdale. Für uns lässt sich darin eine wahrscheinlich unbeabsichtigte Ebene hineinlesen: die der Sternenkinder. Fehlgeburten, Totgeburten und das Sterben von Neugeborenen sind unzureichend sichtbare Schicksale, weshalb wir uns dieser Thematik in unserem Video widmen. Wir wollten hierin das Werk einer bildenden Künstlerin einbinden und stießen auf Lydia Wassner-Hauser, die im österreichischen Eberstalzell ein Glaskunstwerk für eine Sternenkinder-Gedenkstätte errichtet hat. Durch diese Elemente begegnen sich Musik und Bild hier auf einer weiteren Ebene, denn Ēriks Ešenvalds vertonte Stars für Frauenstimmen und gestimmte Gläser. Und ebenso fragil wie das Glas ist das junge Leben selbst.
