GP3 100 is like an old radio signal bouncing around the atmosphere looking for a receiver. The look and behavior feel out of place here in the 21st century. GP3 performs like a vintage film inspired by glass plate technology, and it delivers images that would have been cutting-edge in the late 1950s. And, for me, that gives it a unique place in the market with the potential to deliver captivating images, but if we’re honest, it is far from the ideal film for everyone.
So that gets us to the crux of this video, who is GP3 for? If you shoot 35mm, likely not you. It’s far from the cheapest option and some of the lower-priced films, like Kentmere, perform better and are easier to use. If you shoot 120, well, again, also not you as GP3 is almost as expensive as Acros II and is, at best, on par with options that cost half of GP3. If you shoot sheet film or obscure roll films, then very possibly GP3 is for you. SJCT deserves a lot of credit for figuring out how to reintroduce old film formats - 127, 220, and 620 specifically - and make that a niche market for themselves. They are also one of three companies, Ilford and Adox being the others, making sheet film in many obscure sizes. Really all that’s missing is 110 and, honestly, this would be a gas in 110.
GP3 has gotten a lot better in this iteration, and it’s a film I now like. It’s not the easiest film, nor at all the most forgiving black and white film - in fact it behaves a lot like a persnickety slide film. GP3 is like an inconsistent baseball player: It won’t always connect, but when it does, someone in the stands gets a concussion.

Another great installment David! A mountain of useful information. The 220 has been OK on my recent rolls in my GW680, but I still count the 1st frame and 18th as throw-aways. I hate loading that beast in the field, so that's when I use the 220. Agree on 50 ISO. I also typically use a yellow-green filter with 2.5 stops of comp on top of that. DDX 1+9 stand development 1hr to maintain highlights and get more shadow detail has been the most reliable for me. I have also used the 127 in a Yash44. The 127 is solid these days too - I shot a fresh roll last month. I only tripod shoot this stock in either 127 or 220. I would *love* to see them release 126 to feed my A26. Given their manufacturing is China based, I would think they'd be able to get a company to create the cartridges. Happy Holidays!

Seeing this review made my day! Just as an aside, Catlabs X 80 is most likely the same emulsion. It is also a lot cheaper in the US. I really like it, it has a really unique look.

The backing paper are so thin you have to hand spool before putting it into the camera.

Those Rodinal results are shocking. I just had a roll of this through a Werra and then 1 + 50 in Blazinal at ten minutes and it came out OK The negs were indeed on the thin side but I really liked some of the results with landscapes.

Sounds a bit like Rollei Ortho which isn’t that expensive for a b&w film but still I can get gp3 a bit cheaper delivered

The Shanghai GP3 100 127 format rolls I bought appeared to be out of specification for roll length. In pre-war Rollei TLRs, the rolls were extremely tight and by frame 5 the pins sheared off (I thought I damaged the camera, but fortunately the camera is much more rugged than the plastic spool). I measured two rolls with calipers and they are a fraction of a mm (about .15mm) wider than Kodak or Fuji metal spools. The film is likewise wider, which means it doesn't roll smoothly onto Kodak, Fuji, Rera Pan, or Ilford spools. Either the edge frays or bunches up, either of which can lead to light leaks and wears out the backing paper faster (for those who reuse backing paper). I tried fitting the rolls into a 1958 Rollei Baby TLRs, and they were similarly tight. I decided not to force them. I was able to use the film in a Primo JR, and it appears to fit in the Halma 44 and Minolta Miniflex. I have not tried it in the Yashica 44 yet. I haven't scanned the results yet, so I can't comment on the other aspects. I was hopeful this would be usable as it is almost the only 127 format film available in Thailand. Fortunately, in Europe, we can sometimes get new stock Rollei, Ilford, and of course Rera Pan at prices not radically different from 120 rolls. Users with bakelite Kodak cameras will likely find them more forgiving than the all metal baby TLRs. Regardless, I suggest buying a couple of rolls and making sure they work well before buying big lots.

That makes sense. I didn't use 127 GP3 but I did use a lot of 127 Ezox Rera Chrome and, I would guess, they have the same spool supplier. The Rera Chrome spools sheared in a lot of my cameras.

I concur with this gp3 seems slightly wider, I also found it a bit problematic in my baby grey and will only spool in 1 out of 12 Patterson reels I own, measured the three rolls were ever so slightly out of parallel with one end wider than the other.

@@DavidHancock I never tried Rera Chrome. Rera Pan 100/400 has been no problem. I am spoiled here (from Texas, temp in Poland), right now we have Rollei Crossbird and Ilford HP4 (fresh from Ilford!). 127 Heaven for the moment.

Nothing specific, except to treat it as 50 ISO film. Shooting it in full sun should be a-okay with that camera. So have fun, it sounds like a good day!

Known as orthopanchromatic film - have you tried using it in daylight with a red filter? I am just about to try some in 4x5in and 8x10in formats.

I did but the test roll wasn't usable for the video due to poor loading for development on my part, which led to some images having the emulsion touching the film in front of it for development. There is a section in the video, links on the description, for filter performance and while I don't have sample photos I did have some starting point offers ideas for using filters.

Hi David, I watched the rest of the video and saw your very good section on filters. Thanks for the excellent video - I think I'll mainly use a light yellow filter which I use for orthochromatic film when I need cloud detail against a blue sky. I have had absolutely bad luck with this film, and have developed a strong hatred for it after a manufacturing error, in a new batch by the way, where the film was not properly attached to the backing paper, subsequently breaking the internal drive gears in my Salyut-c camera back when the film separated from the backing paper while in use. While not destroying impossible to replace camera backs, it was almost as bad as the old stuff, as it was horrifically inconsistent, and curled like nothing else I have ever used. It’s only saving grace it’s availability in odd sizes for a good price.

Oh, ouch. I had one roll of 220 that tore and some 120 that did not feed correctly (because they use lengths of tape that are shorter than the film, leaving the corners of the leading edged untaped) a couple of times, but nothing that damaged a camera. Ouch.

@@DavidHancock I noticed the tape not going to the edge too, but that didn’t cause any major issues, this one had the tape put on in the wrong place, about 1/16th an inch before the end of the film so it never made any contact with the backing paper. Hopefully they can iron out these issues in the near future.

You say it's better but as of summer 2023 someone I know got a box of sheets that was cut so crooked and small that it fell out of film holders. Still don't trust them enough to buy this stuff over almost anything else.

Isn't it "just" Orwo UN54? If so, a lot from your video would be explained by that.

@@DavidHancock , just look at the development times for UN54+... anyway, ORWO has a facility in Shanghai for packaging into canisters. So, it looks like a fim produced in Germany and package/cut in China.

@@afrikabb I don't think it is ORWO. They don't have the machinery as far as I know to make sheet film. It also has a different look.
