In desperate need of both a decent workbench with vices and workshop storage I decided on the Sjobergs flat-packed Nordic Plus 1450 workbench and am delighted with the result.
The bench was purchased from Axminster Tools and Machinery in the UK in the Easter 2019 sale. www.axminster.co.uk
It comes with 2 steel screw vices which can be mounted in 4 locations on the bench. The bench is ideal for smaller workshop but remains a weighty and sturdy bench for handtool work.
The top is made from solid beech is 28mm in the centre and 70mm at the edges.
I had spent some time looking at workbench ideas, plans and videos trying to decide what I needed. This included traditional english joiners benches, roubo style benches and those swedish benches popular in nordic countries. However in the end I decided I just needed a bench and the Sjöbergs bench seemed to fit the bill.
While Sjobergs do many benches I discounted the Elite 2000, 2500 and 1500 due to its physical size. I have a single-car garage that measures only 6m by 3m. The Scandi Plus benches were a little out of my price range. And the SB119 (SB 119) is new on the market and again dismissed due to size.
The dog holes are 19mm in size compared to the 20mm holes in the Festool MFT and Parfdog / Parfguide system. So beware. However Sjöbergs sell hold-downs (holdfast), bench dogs and clamps. So expect me to accessorise over the coming months.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the video. Take-care Karl.

Hi Karl; I received my Sjöbergs Nordic 1450 plus workbench and storage and I assembled it by following your useful video guide which was very easy to follow. I used a couple of coats of OSMO polyx for finishing the bench and I chose the clear finish. The dowels and holes for assembling the leg sections were very well machined and the dowels needed a few soft taps with a mallet to drive them home. The provided instruction set was unclear at a couple of points but thanks to your video review of the assembly process, the potential head scratching time was shortened by a considerable margin. I felt that the assembly instruction drawing for the storage unit could have been larger for the supposedly isolated views for the detail of each support rail because the coloured lines drawn at the end of the rail were very subtle and could easily have been missed. The support rail assembly was obvious when looking at each rail detail because only two of the rails had the necessary double rebates to take the sliding doors. The fastening system for the storage support rails gave me a small headache. I could not hold the bolt at the correct height to permit the cylindrical threaded metal end to be inserted and stop at the correct position for the bolt to be easily threaded into it. I placed the leg section flat on a work surface and inserted the bolt and its supporting washer from underneath the leg. I moved it onto the work surface so that the bolt would not fall out and then inserted the metal threaded cylinder in the leg. Lifting the leg section I was able to feel when the bolt had slipped backwards far enough to permit the metal threaded cylinder to be inserted to the correct depth and I felt the bolt go forward until it located the start thread of the metal threaded cylinder. I then took a few turns by hand so that the leg was loosely attached to the storage support rail. Rinse and repeat for the other rails then slide all of the hardboard and plywood panels into place. Apply the second leg section and fasten the bolts in the same manner. Stand the storage unit on its legs and adjust any panels needing closer and more accurate fitting and then tighten all of the bolts. All in all, it is a really good product and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a really good workbench. Thank you for taking the time to show how you managed the assembly because it really helped me to put my own bench together. The point you make about the two screws for fixing the worktop to the leg and storage unit is well taken. I would think the rationale was to stop the top moving on the base. The weight of it should prevent the bench from moving, especially with some tools put into in the storage units. I pondered whether to glue the top to the vice supports but decided against it. It would be more useful to be able to divide the worktop from the storage unit if moving home or whatever.

Such a frustrating experience with this Sjoberg Nordic 1450 bench. The very last step in the manual is telling us not to do the very first step in the manual if we want to assemble the bench in it's full capacity with the sliding doors and the drawers. The moment we do step 1 in the manual, no further assembly steps are possible, and you would not now why, if in absolut desperation, you do not decide to skip all following steps and read the very last step on the last page of the manual stating: "N.B. The two original rails (from step one in this manual) supplied with the bench trestle will no longer be required" The very first step in the manual is advising us to start with attaching the rails to the legs... So much FUN!

Question: I have the 1450 bench and have been using it for a couple of years. I just bought the cabinet and want to add it to the bench. Both the instructions and this video indicate that I will have to partially disassemble the bench to assemble the cabinet. I'll have to take the leg trestles apart. Is there any way around having to start almost from the beginning? Help!
@StrawbyteWorkshop
@StrawbyteWorkshop 4 года назад
In the video at aproximately 3 minutes in I've assembled the two leg 'squares'. From that point all the elements in the storage kit, plus the hardboard bottom to the orginal shelf are added to the legs. So, from the point of view of a completed bench you'll need to remove the top from the leg assembly, and then remove the rails between the legs keeping the bottom panel. From there follow the instructions for the storage unit and then re-attach the top. I hope that helps.

Getting closer to buying this bench s o your upload was really useful, particularly the tips during build, a common thread with ratings is the poor quality of instructions. I do have a question, did you consider gluing the dovetails in the drawers, also how has the hardboard stood up, one poster replaced it with 5mm ply to improve it, cheers
@StrawbyteWorkshop
@StrawbyteWorkshop 4 года назад
The drawers have held together well over the last 12 months. To be honest I haven't considered gluing or altering them in any way from the design. What is a bit of a disappointment is the cupboard next to them as I think now I'd prefer more drawers. But looking back i would still buy the bench with the storage unit rather than the one without.
@mikkosrussos
@mikkosrussos 3 года назад
I went without the cupboards and stability was fine, dont think the cupboards would have made it any more rigid... my garage floor was less than level, so that caused quite severe movement if, say planing... didnt matter as i attached it to a much bigger assembly bench. If youve got an uneven floor, i would definitely consider attaching this to a wall or other bench like I did... you could retrofit levelling feet. Highly recommend some grease for the vices before use. Also bought self adhesive cork from amazon at a fraction of the price of Sjobergs soft grips.
@StrawbyteWorkshop
@StrawbyteWorkshop 3 года назад
Hey thanks for you comment. My bench is now 'massive' in the true sense of the word with new cabinet underneath adding almost 75kg to it's weight. It doesn't move an inch now. Good point about having a level floor as it wasn't something I really had to consider as I'd laid a new PVC floor shortly afterwards. But yes to levelling feet I now have them fitted and they make a difference. Cork tape is great stuff the roll I bought has done almost 2 years service and my cork faces get chewed up all the time.

Very helpful video given the somewhat difficult to decipher instructions provided by Sjöbergs. One word of caution, Karl prefers to use wood glue for all of the dowel joints on the base. The Sjöbergs instructions do not call for this, and if you decide to glue them up, be 110% sure of the orientation of all parts, that every piece of the bench is in good condition and you won’t need to be returning anything to your dealer. Why do I say this you ask? First of all, like most people will probably do, I ordered the bench online, which means it is subject to shipping damages. I live in the Los Angeles area, in an easy to deliver to spot and it took not one, not two, not three, but FOUR attempts before I received a bench that was undamaged. (Even then, I combined parts from numbers 3 and 4 to come up with a damage free build) On bench number three, I thought all was well and proceeded to assemble the base first. Because the instructions are terrible, and I was anxious to get going, I didn’t notice in the drawing the small differences between the front and back orientation and where everything needed to be. I had to redo it twice to orient the front dog holes correctly and make sure the small overhang was in the back. This would not have been possible if it had been glued up. Low and behold, when the base was finally oriented correctly and standing, I put the top in place and took a closer look. Almost immediately I found a large crack that I hadn’t noticed when unpacking the box, meaning the whole bench was going to have to go back- again… Had I glued the legs up, it would have become a much different conversation with the store I purchased the bench from… My advice- follow the instructions, as bad as they are, in combination with this video, and proceed with caution. Dry fit everything and make sure it’s correct. Look at every part closely to make sure it’s not damaged. Only then, would I pull out the glue on the base. Honestly, I don’t think I will ever glue it up. The base is the weakest and ugliest part of the bench and I’ll probably make my own out of more substantial stock when I have the time. I’ll use this base for an outfeed table or some other use… All that said, I found Karl’s video essential, and thank him for taking the time. It was a great help.

Hi Pedro. Since building the bench I've been pretty happy with it. I never liked the storage option as both the drawers and the cabinet were a little limited. If you're looking for a general workbench I would say this is a good option but the only complaint is that it's a bit light-weight for hand-tool work. I have subsequently changed the storage in the bench and made my own unit (there's another video on my channel featuring it) which increased the weight of the bench considerably and now it's a lovely bench to work from. One other thing is that the dog holes are 3/4 of an inch and in the UK it's pretty difficult to find bench dogs or clamps in that size (20mm is the norm here) but I've found a few places for clamps and so on and the bench is now really very versatile. The supplied bench dogs are very good, but I'd recommend getting more.

@StrawbyteWorkshop 2 года назад
Hi - great question. And let me start by saying that your observation is correct in that on the 1450 the vice is a basic vice. It has a single screw with no quick release and the guide-bars are supported only by the holes in hardwood mounts. However, overall I am still happy with the bench and for me the vices are adequate for my needs. With items in one end of the jaws the vice will rack as you closed the jaws up on to the work. That said, I've always used a 'racking block' at the other end of a wood working vice. Usually an offcut sometimes a glazing packer. That was how I was always instructed to tighten-up a vice when I was apprenticed to my father in his woodworking shop. I like the 1500 hundred myself, but the 1400 was and is the perfect size for my needs so I was always happy to live with any limitations. And yes - I saw your comment and do try to respond to everyone who gets in touch. Thanks for watching the video and do subscribe. I plan to do a follow-up on the bench soon. Karl.

I'm curious, how have you enjoyed this workbench over the years? I'm debating between getting a Nordic or Scandi. Is the Nordic really sturdy enough for most everything a hobbyist is going to do? Or do you wish you had splurged for the Scandi to get that extra sturdiness?
@StrawbyteWorkshop
@StrawbyteWorkshop 2 года назад
I've certainly enjoyed using the workbench. It's been pretty robust and it's now full of dings, drill holes and saw cuts. The thing I've learned though owning it is that it lacks weight out-of-the-box, (even with the storage unit full), and this would be the key difference between the Nordic and Scandi - The scandi top is 38mm thick vs 28mm for the Nordic and twice as heavy. That said, what has helped considerably is building my own storage box for the bench and using that to store all my shop hardware, screw cases and so on. By adding over 120kg in weight, the bench doesn't move one bit when planing. Something I didn't discuss in the video but was on my mind at the time I made it is that I really struggled with reconciling the expense of a bought bench and I found the additional expense of the scandi or elite (along with similar benches from Axminster and others) really hard to justify. Thanks for the question Josh.

@@StrawbyteWorkshop Thanks so much for the feedback. That's very helpful. My main concern is that since I'm starting out, I'm not sure how to build a workbench without any flat reference. I don't even have sawhorses or saw benches yet, which I do plan on building ASAP. It's just the thought of planing a bunch of boards, somehow jointing them flush, making sure everything is perfectly flat and square, without any working area at the moment seems very daunting. Not to mention, I have a very demanding job that only allows me a couple hours each night to enjoy myself. I also usually work over the weekend. It would take me weeks if not months to build my own workbench. I'd like to just get to the hobby building, and I think getting a workbench would help tremendously. Maybe I should just get the much cheaper Nordic and plan on building a more robust workbench later. Then again, while nearly $3,000 seems outrageous for the Elite Scandi, I'd eventually buy two of their $350 vices anyway, regardless if I build my own. That's $700 alone, and they come with the Elite. Plus I'd expect the Elite Scandi to last me a lifetime, maybe even be used by my children one day, and that makes the $3,000 not seem so terrible.

Thanks Ron. It came together quickly and the only errors were trying to figure out the panels for the storage unit and hence the interjection mid video. What I was hoping for was to show that despite a reputation for poor instructions, it's pretty straightforward and the resulting bench is worth the investment.

@StrawbyteWorkshop
@StrawbyteWorkshop 5 лет назад
Good question +kthornton1 as I spent a good deal of time on February designing my ideal bench based on an English Joiners workbench design from Chris Shwartz. However I've a list of projects that I just need to get done and since this bench was in the Axminster Easter Sale I thought what the hell I'll buy one. I will be building an MFT style table at some point though.
@kthornton1
@kthornton1 5 лет назад
@@StrawbyteWorkshop I figured that it would come down to time & money but its always interesting to check if there are other factors involved. I'm currently building a MFT slab using the Parf Guide system for the dog holes. As I don't have a shop space I need something that I can quickly and easily set up and put away in the yard. After that I plan on building a MFTC based on Timothy Wilmots design so that I have something a bit sturdier to work on but can still easily pack it up and put it in the storage space I have available. I'd also be interested to hear what kinds of issues you had with your shed workshop as that size of space is about the best I can achieve.
@StrawbyteWorkshop
@StrawbyteWorkshop 5 лет назад
@@kthornton1 I'm not sure I've I've shared this on video before but I found there were 2 main limitations with my old space. 1. Time. It was possible for me to have a drill-press, table saw and mitre saw in the workshop, but I could have only 1 out at a time and it takes time to reconfigure the workshop and even a simple project like the dressing table mirror takes twice as long as a result. 2. Limitation on the size of project. The two shop cabinets were the largest things I built in the space. for anything else I'd have to work outside which is cold in the winter months and (since I'm in England) typically wet during the summer months. Beyond that I would have continued to be happy with the space and now I've migrated to the track-saw I would probably be thriving. Having 3 x the room I had before is great but I've now got a way bigger bandsaw and a planer thicknesser so am really at capacity again. But at least I can build bigger projects.

@StrawbyteWorkshop
@StrawbyteWorkshop Год назад
Hey Roland. thanks for the comment. As you know I've had the bench 3 years now and overall I'm pretty happy with it. One thing I touched on in the video and something I've enjoyed is the ability to move the vices from the ends to the side as I want. The bench's small compact form is ideal in my small workshop so it's been useful to move the vices around if the long side is against the wall or the short side. What I have done is make my own storage unit. One of the complaints I've seen people make in the comments is that the bench is too light. There's is no doubt the bench lacks mass - if that's what you're looking for in an Sjobergs bench then you're paying an extra £1000 for the Elite 1500 bench - but my solution was to design a new cabinet that would accomodate all of my screws, nails and other hardware. Fully loaded the bench now weighs around 400Kg. Sure that doesn't give you a thick beech top - but when you're hand-planing you can't move the bench at all.

Hi! How can it stays in place at only 35 kg? Especially when planing...
@StrawbyteWorkshop
@StrawbyteWorkshop Год назад
You're right it doesn't - too light out the box. It's probably the only downside to the bench. However, in a later video I replaced the storage unit in the bench and now I've got around 70kg of fasteners and hardware in the bench too and it's going nowhere.

I can recommend giving all the wood three coats of OSMO POLYX HARD-WAX OIL 3044 RAW 750ML and using TITEBOND ORIGINAL WOOD GLUE - sorry about the Caps - copied it from my invoice. Apply the oil first before assembling - it's much easier that way. It took me about an hour a day for three days to allow for drying. I stacked the pieces on their ends while drying. I supported the worktop on the corners with some folded cardboard to allow air to circulate while drying. Thanks for the video - the instructions aren't great. By the way, that single screw to hold the top on isn't sufficient.
@StrawbyteWorkshop
@StrawbyteWorkshop 4 года назад
Hey thanks for the comment and I can also recommend OSMO too. I used 3062 Clear Matt. I've only used OSMO on the bench top. The legs and storage I've used water based varnish. Your absolutely right it's all much easier before assembly but to be honest it took a few days for me to make my mind up on a finish. I did fix that screw issue in the way described. Much better.

@@simonjohnson2897 I will cover this in a future video in more detail. Castors you've seen, I've added a large amount of 18mm MDF to the back and underside of the cabinet to increase the bench's mass. For the same reason the sandbags I use for my filming equipment are stored under the bench. I've drilled out 4 of the dog holes to 20mm to accomodate festool style dogs so I can use my short tracksaw rail on the bench. I have a t-slot track installed on the back of the bench to allow me to mount wide panels moxon style.

That's a fair point. I made a choice to glue many joints rather than rely solely on mechanical fixings which goes beyond what I would consider mere assembly because I wanted a solid and sturdy bench as I would had I built starting with raw timber. The result benefits from that mindset.

Sorry to hear about issues with your new bench. I think the explanation is poor sure, wood will move due to changes in atmospheric moisture, but always within a range which should be foreseeable if your selling benches to hobbyists. It's a shame as there are few alternatives.
