In this interview, Arshan caught up with skaiwater, a rapper and producer from the UK. Skaiwater started releasing music in 2018 and eventually featured on Lil Nas X’s song, “No Love”. He started gaining more attention with the release of his track “Blakehomie”, which currently has over a million streams on Spotify alone. In 2022, Skai blew up even more through posting on TikTok, where two of his songs “#miles” and “eyes” went viral. He recently dropped the music video for his newest single, “boys don’t cry”, which has over 100,000 views in less than a week.
During the interview, Skaiwater reveals that he’s afraid of dogs but still has one tattooed, before talking about his background growing up. He explains why there’s a song on his Spotify from 2004, the origins of his name, & how his dad used to make music. Skai mentions being influenced by Kanye and says that My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is in the top 3 albums of all time. He then talks about being a huge fan of XXXtentaction & Frank Ocean, before discussing the genre “Jersey Club” and how his sound is evolving. They briefly discuss Drake’s Jersey Club song, “Currents”, and Skaiwater addresses how he switches his accent in his music. Skaiwater also talks about his favorite TV shows, naming “WandaVision” & giving predictions for “Stranger Things”.
Skaiwater goes into detail about how Lil Nas X has been a huge supporter of his, before talking about how he started producing w/ TakeADayTrip. He talks about his relationship w/ Pink Pantheress, mentioning that they could have a possible collab, before talking about his feature on “Bliss” w/ Slump6s. Skai says he wants to work w/ Pi’erre Bourne, explains lessons he learned from going viral, dealing w/ pressure, & gives advice for upcoming creatives: don’t try to go viral. Skai says “Quintana Part 2” is one of his favorite Travis Scott songs before revealing that his new music won’t be Jersey Club. They end their conversation with Skai talking about his goals for the future & wanting a Grammy. Kids Take Over is based in Vancouver, Canada.
