When a Skateistan staff member first encountered a group of young girls in a Kabul park in December 2009, she had no way of knowing that one of them would go on to become one of Afghanistan's best skaters, and Skateistan's most enthusiastic instructor, not to mention a natural artist. This is Faranas' story.
Skateistan is an international NGO connecting youth and education through skateboarding in Afghanistan and Cambodia.

Skateboarding is the greatest thing in the world. And through skateboarding we all learn that anything is possible, you just have to try. Learning to ollie is one of the hardest things to do, but we all do it. ***** is taking the power of skateboarding to kids in Afghanistan. This video isn't new, but it should be watched and shared again.

I dont understand all of theese "skaters" in the comments are putting her, and ride channel down because she "sucks." Skateboarding is about expression, and having fun. Shes probly more of a skater than anyone who hates on her. How anyone with a functioning concince can hate on this is beyond me. Mad respect for her, every other skater in this video, and ride channel.

Man this is why I think skateboarding needs to become an Olympic sport. With kids like these who love the sport and see it as a stress reliever, who else can this sport help kids around the world. Thanks to legends such as Tony Hawk, Cabellero, etc, who are introducing the sport worldwide it's great to see that other parts of the world are picking up skateboarding and look forward to it everyday. I still look forward to riding pools afterwork and I'm in my 40's and my dad introduced it to me when I was 8. This is a great story and inspiring... she will get somewhere in life. If there's anything in life that taught me about skateboarding is that you got to keep getting up no matter how hard it looks, and eventually you'll get it, but at the passion and interest has got to be there. She a prime candidate for this... I hope RIDE follows up with her 5 or 10 years from now just to see what she's become. That would be a great story!!!! And who the hell gives this a thumbs down?

Doge wow Umm, compared to Afghanistan we are. I'm am not one of those, "If you're not happy, then get out" kind of people, and I believe that any modern, western country has a lot of room for improvement, but it's important to have the perspective to understand that if you're born in a modern country, with access to education, medical care, and a government that isn't explicitly sponsored by religion, then you are part of the small minority.

Actually without religion, USA would be nothing. The supreme court have been using laws from prophet Muhammad(PBUH) since 1953 till today. Just saying.

The US certainly has religion running through its history and the influence of religion on the government, either by politicians or the people, is and has been present. However, it's nothing like other governments which actively, literally, and explicitly endorse a religion. Look, it's part of my studies and job to review and examine Supreme Court decisions, and the court separates the government from religion far more than a lot of people think or hear about. For example, could you imagine a court banning all school led (but voluntary) prayers in Afganistan? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engel_v._Vitale I want to reiterate that I don't think the US is perfect, but it is far off countries like Afganistan.

the skatepark is so clean, it make me want to ride there for days and days but something true is the motivation she has to ride a skateboard is the same that any other person who has passion for it, will do. skateboarding no matter language country or anything else

Those weren't exactly approving stares that she was getting outside... Not that you could see the faces of the women behind those burqas. It is hard for me to watch these kinds of videos and wonder how different the world would be with no religion. Something like two thirds of Muslim women never attend school, and the ones that do very rarely continue all the way through their teens. Things are better in Afghanistan right now, college enrollment is up 2600% since 2001, but many people think the Taliban is just waiting in the wings, ready to take power when the US and their allies pull their troops out, and they do not allow women in college, nor any school for that matter. I am sorry, but the way these people treat women is just stupid and cruel, and it will continue to happen as long as people keep believing in supernatural beings with superpowers. Christianity is just Muslim-light, by the way. King James just took all of the parts he found distasteful out, including women not being able to display their cleavage in public.

I think you should at least check out what it is. I think that's more the right for ride channel to promote this kind of realities. As i think you have sometimes also said yourself skateboard is a lifestyle, and it's not only hard tricks that 10 people in the world can do. The fact that a so called american sport like skateboard is used in an arab society to promote education and gender equality is just marvelous and ispirational. Please try to look just a bit outside of your little easy world
