Thank you for this video! I just tried skating outside for the first time and it was a nightmare. I got myself in an unexpected hill and I thought the only way to go downhill was backwards but there was no way I was trying that. I just went forward, gained a lot of speed, got desperate because there were cars passing at the end of the hill and then fell big time haha Had to crawl the rest of the way like a fool.

It's the same in the reverse. If you are more used to outdoor skating, indoor skating feels like you're floating on air and you feel less connected. I have a hard time gauging my abilities indoors.

Skating outside is like a punch in the gut after skating indoors LOL. Question for @skatie - my skates have 85A wheels, which were described as hybrid and fine for outside, but I can definitely feel every slight variation in the surface - making me very wobbly - and pebbles take me down. Basically, I feel like I can't skate at all 😞 In your experience, could I get used to 85A outside relatively (I know it will vary by person, but just on average) quickly, or would a gummier wheel be better when outside since I'm still a beginner?
@Skatie
@Skatie Год назад
I roll on a 84a outside but not all wheels are created equal. My 84a’s are big, 65mm (Roll-Line Helium) the size helps to absorb the vibration and bump over debris. If you’re rolling a small wheel 57mm for example you’ll lose a lot of that shock absorbing power.

Katie where do you buy your skate wheels? I have not been able to find anything softer than 78a.
@Skatie

78A seems to be the general industry standard for outside wheels. I have lots of random wheels accrued over time so some are more unusual and no longer available unfortunately.

I've been checking my local park, just when i thought i found a good spot to try skating, i realise it's really uneven, in fact the only smooth place is the skate park, and i'm just learning to skate. Had to go and get soft wheels for my skates, oh well
@Skatie

Finding a good spot outside can be so tricky. Do you have any cycle paths where you are? I’m in the UK and cycle paths here tend to be quite new so nice smooth tarmac.

I am having a hard time getting past the fear of skating on a really rough outdoor surface. I have 78a's, but when I tried to skate on rough concrete, I felt like I was going to fall. I found a smoother concrete space, but it's very narrow. So all I can really do is skate forward. I haven't advanced to backwards skating yet. But I noticed today that the 78a's seemed to want to catch a bit on that smoother concrete. So I plan on trying some 82a's tomorrow. Does that sound like it may help? Or should I stick with the 78's?
@Skatie
@Skatie 10 месяцев назад
It could be the size of wheel that will make more of a difference. For outside a big wheels 60-65mm will help to roller over those rougher surfaces.
@ASMRTingledPink
@ASMRTingledPink 10 месяцев назад
@@Skatie my 78a wheels are 60mm, but I have a feeling it's more me that's the problem than the wheels. I don't think I'm balanced properly or something. I feel very awkward and unstable.

i just got my first skates and the wheels are 85 on the durometer. im trying to skate on an old basketball court but i still feel like its too rickety. should i save up for soft wheels or is it just up to balance? (i started skating 3 days ago, i can only go forward and do basic bubbles) thanks :)
@Skatie
@Skatie Год назад
If the surface is old it might just be quite rough. Perhaps a softer wheel might help 78a but it could be that it’s maybe just too bumpy as going to a 78 won’t make that much difference. If the wheel is small that can make a difference too, bigger wheels can cope with the lumps and bumps better 60-65mm
@annavanderwal990
@annavanderwal990 2 года назад
I learned it indoors on weels from 78 i want it softer for outside but i don’t feel differens because i learned it inside on soft weels what should i do? Buy even softer weels?

@Skatie
@Skatie 2 года назад
These are really old wheels from the 90s but I’d recommend Roll-line Helium wheels, Airwaves, or Radar Energy for outside skating. For outside, look between 78a to 85a and ideally a larger wheel between 60 - 65mm.

You are showing a stagger stance with your skates TOUCHING, which is going to lead to bad habits with new skaters. This is dangerous in the case that you hit a rock or crack, BOTH of your feet will land your face down on the ground. Also, don't skate outdoors without safety gear, no matter your experience level. Two experienced skaters already died this year from head injuries.
