Sketch like an Architect (Techniques + Tips from a Real Project)

Follow along as I work through a few rough sketches for a new project; I discuss the key style points and techniques you can use to develop your own architectural sketching style. Each sketching vignette includes many tips, but broadly they fall under the following headings:
1) Simply your toolset: fewer tools = fewer decisions
2) Start small: move quickly, be less precise, less precious
3) Line work: architectural sketching is a line art, not a fine art
4) Annotations: helps create a layered esthetic, describes things you're not able to easily show
5) Media + Implements: how changing these from time to time can spur new ideas.
6) Practice: the one thing guaranteed to improve your architectural sketching technique.

I am an engineer, and I like to draw a lot of my ideas out by hand sketch first. Younger coworkers laugh at this, but I find that hand sketching gives me more of a "feel" for what I am designing. This is difficult to explain, but I am sure (based on your video) that you understand what I am talking about. Great video!

During all my design presentations, found that all my hand sketches and renderings are much appreciated by my clients, less so with 2D computer drawn images. Keep up the good work! Young designers and future Architects must learn to draw by hand first.

I´ve made this decision this year that i would sketch at least one thing/ideia a day, not caring for the quality, but more for the process. Now, i´m almost drawing 2 to 3 sketches a day, like you said: to replace this urge to check social media( i even don´t look anymore, just in the bus going or coming back from my university to check the architecture news and the people or office that inspires me hahah) and switching sketching styles. Well, in the end i´m finally starting to get pleased with my sketching now hahahahhah. I know everyone says this, but like always, you inspire a lot! Cheers from Brazil!

As a trained fashion designer I used to tell other students that they had to draw every day, home, travel, sitting outside, anywhere . Some asked of it was really neccesary to 'sacrifice' so much time to this but of course if you have trouble with doing this then you should find another job! I began sketching at about the age of 8 and my pocket money went into paper which for me from a poor family was treasure! One night a few years ago I came across a dumpster full of boxes of paper !!! it was raining but I managed to drag home a box despite the rain and walking two feisty Jack Russells ! I imagined what a difference that paper would have meant to me as a child. Lovely video thank you, my father wanted me to be an architect but I chose fashion so I would never be out of work and I never have ! BUT in a way garment construction and architecture are not so far apart are they!

Stephanie Murray I’ve been drawing for 4 years now and The art I draw would not give that impression due to the fact I perceive things differently. You don’t need to draw everyday. I draw so inconsistently it would make an art major cringe. But the results only show improvement with each and every post. This is why I usually tend to fallout with teachers. They expect too much and waste too much time.

Very good point about making your work for your eyes only. If your like most people we strive to please others and loose focus of what makes our own mind happy

Thats interesting. They always told us to make BIG sketches, to let the world think your ideas are BIG not small... But yes, it slows you down and it is much harder to draw a very long straight line than a short one. Great looking sketches and wonderful tips. Thank you!
