New here - but what made me subscribe is the expert way you make soft edges with gouache. All the others have sharp layers. This is more like an oil painting. Thanks.

Casein can work great as a gouache imprimatura or underpainting. It doesn’t reactivate after it dries and you can paint over it easily.

Hi Teri. I have never used casein because it dries permanently like acrylics which means that once the paint has dried you can’t soften edges in your painting. Edge softening plays a very important role in my painting, so gouache is the perfect medium for me because it can be reactivated with water at any time. I often review the edges before calling the painting finished.

May I ask how long this painting took? I'm curious about the pacing of the painting - if you let each section dry before starting the next?

It must have taken me about two hours to complete this painting. Gouache dries almost immediately, so I didn’t have to pause during the painting session.

Was this painted with normal gouache or acrylic gouache? I ask that because of the way you manage to build up layers of thick paint.

I work only with traditional gouache. I add very little water to my colors as I paint, so my gouache paintings usually have some texture.

@@LenaRivo How do you prevent activating the previous layer? If I try to paint thick over thick layers, the lower layer always reactivates and mixes with the new layer. Do you have a video about this? It might be helpful for us newbies with gouache.
