I feel the same way about pencil smudges, especially over time. It doesn’t feel like a pencil when sketching, but I’ve been using the Sakura micron in light cool grey. It’s the one that’s made me the happiest so far! Hope you feel better soon!

Being sick sucks. I hope you feel better soon! I actually love the way you non-conventionally start portraits. Proportionally, it makes mathematical and logical sense to start with the skull as a base. However , I, too, start in non conventional places. Sometimes, I draw the facial features first. Sometimes, I draw the hair. Sometimes, I draw the skull and start with a circle. I find I get bored doing things exactly the same way every time. Especially since I love to draw people more than anything else. Painting, I prefer landscapes. Drawing / sketching? People. Watching you sketch is so frickin soothing... I love the interaction as well, but you need to zone out, draw, and heal.

Derwent makes a fine liner called Graphik Line on graphite color gets close to a pencil feel for me. thanks for the video😊

Ain stein no smear leads are great! I have a 2B and as long as its just lines and not like shading or anything it barely if at all smears

I got a metal pencil in japan that doesn't smudge and is mostly erasable. Though I found over time it does dull and you cant really sharpen it. At least the one that I bought.

For pencil smudging: spray a bit of hairspray (the cheapest one you can find) one tube of spray will last a long time and protect ur sketchbook pages :)

How do you shade is there a specific way you go about it when lining?

About a pen that looks like pencil: there is a Noodler's ink called "Lexington Gray" that has a nice graphite look if you use it on a Fine or XFine fountain pen, and it's waterproof. There's also the Zebra F-301 BF, a ballpoint pen that lets you do really nice feathery lines like a pencil, but it's not waterproof.
