Spectacular, I love how you combine colour with black and white; love everything about your art. I’m always excited when I see you’ve posted another video.
Oh boy…Wednesday mornings are my favourite time! The anticipation of colour and design is so strong…and yet I try to delay opening your post and just relish the excitement for a while! You never disappoint. Thank you so much!
Love your line, shapes and color! iI's a design extravaganza. Having taken your online sketchbook class has really opened my eyes to all sorts of possibilities. And this video is a sequel to the inspiration. Many thanks!
Oh Marianne thank you so very much for your lovely comment and for taking my class, I really do appreciate your support and Kind words. Wishing you lots of luck with all your creative endeavours. Love Helen x
Marvellous Helen...such a great resource you've built up! Would be interested to see what aspect you will choose for the commission and a peak into the start of the process....
Thank you so much Joni, it's a great idea that I often think about, I'm always a little mindful about sharing my art supplies as I know they are not always available everywhere and I try and have a philosophy that art making is not about the 'perfect pen' or about buying new products... ❤️
Another great share Helen. I am loving the Art Journal Joy course - I cannot stop being inspired! And even surprising myself along the way ... thank you Helen.
Oh wow Gail, I LOVE that. Thank you co much for taking it and for all your lovely comments and support along the way. I love that you're surprising yourself... that's the best! x
I love your use of contrast and color. One of my favorite things in nature is when there is a gorgeous sunset behind a blank empty tree and the trunk looks black and the sunset is in hyper color. And I get the same feeling from looking at your paintings. So that is giving me ideas to explore that. As a beginner artist. You giving me courage to be bold!
Hi Helen, again thank you for your fantastic videos and art. I am an artist/maker since childhood (even went to art school in the UK in my twenties & I’m now in my 60’s - Middlesex Poly (Jewelry design at Cat Hill branch) after it used to be Hornsey College of Art - I believe it’s now called Westminster University- life intervened and I decided on a less precarious form of income, also a complete different direction from art, and so, art was relegated to the back burner for many years. Little by little art came back into my life (once I let it) but strictly in a spare time/hobby form. I experimented and still do with different media, some 3D & some 2D. My art making is on a kind of stop & start basis since I let other areas of my life take precedence over it. I do have quite a few sketchbooks and you’ve given me the idea of photocopying my sketches and reusing them in a new format (the originals are still too precious for me to “ruin”). I forgot to say that I would like art to take a more central part in my life (but not with a commercial angle) as I see it has a very beneficial effect on me. I would be grateful for any input and direction. Thanks again.
Thank you for your lovely message. It’s lovely that you have identified that you want art to be more central in your life, the good thing is you have this as a clear intention, now it’s about making it reality. You may want to think about what your personal obstacles are, what has gotten in the way of this and think about how you will prioritise the time and space to make this happen. And I think it does need time, time for you to explore, experiment and play… I’m a great fan of lists, making a list of all the types of art, material, techniques you are interested in or enjoyed previously, mining your sketchbooks for clues and giving yourself permission to explore until you find a rhythm and a way of making art which feels good to you. Good luck with it x
OMG that was just great, I was transfixed by your lovely work ! Wow, what an inspiration they are. I loved the black and white theme as much as the colour work. Loved all the natural shapes and like me you seem to love the power of a line. Thankyou for sharing, my only complaint was you went so quickly and I wanted to pour over them 🙃
these are sooo beautiful! may i ask where you get your sketchbooks from? do you make the book itself? what kind of paper/thickness is that? are all of these marker or watercolor or both?
Oh thank you. So sometimes I make the books myself and sometimes I use a sketchbook bought from a brand called Fabriano. Either way the paper is usually circa 200gsm. Here in this video I am using all kinds of art materials, pens, watercolour paint and ink. I use a. lot of different art processes. Thanks so much Helen x
Spectacular work. Looking at your pages elicits an emotional happy dance! I wonder if you make your own sketchbooks? If so, what kind of paper do you use? If not, what brands of sketchbooks do you recommend?
Oh thank you so much Chris that's lovely of you. Your like a mind reader next week's video and blog post is all about the sketchbooks I recommend. I'll try and remember to come back and link it here...
Oh thank you, they’re not very organised! In a pile, in a shelf and in a big box. I’m often getting them out to look at so they’re easily accessible. I do date my sketchbooks though with a start date and completion date x
