thanks for this because I accidentally bought water soluble ink and didn’t know what to do with it but now I will try to use it this way! 👍

When I first became serious about learning to sketch, I used water soluble inks (mostly noodler's Antietam) because all I needed was a pen, water brush, and a little sketchbook. It's so small and light. Easy to carry anywhere and get a quick sketch in while waiting for something. I'm moving to a different house so I've been really busy and not sketching, but now that you've reminded me of line and wash style, I'm going to go back to it for a while. I've never tried it with a brush pen or fude nib so that's going to be my next step in my pursuit of learning to draw. Your channel is so inspirational and motivating. Thank you!

Fascinating! Thanks for doing this demo. Your commentary and narrative thought process is just as helpful as seeing the drawing evolve.

Ink wash is one of my favorite sketching techniques. I personally use waterproof ink in a brush pen, then dilute it on the page with a water brush before it dries. Or, I mix it on the opposing page of my sketchbook and apply it prediluted. It's a fun and quick way to have tonal values with waterproof lines. It was fun watching your technique. Great video as usual!

Good timing. I recently sketched along with you on a series of buildings. I used my fountain pen which I thought had waterproof ink in it. As I went to add a watercolor wash over the finished drawing the ink bled and now I can go back and choose some more places to activate that ink as if I meant for that to happen. Thank you!!

I love watching you dissolve the ink lines to create shadows. That Pentel pen is great. I do quite a bit of ink wash with a disposable Le Pen Flex in Dark Grey - the flexible tip creates both thick and thin lines so it's easy to get dark shadows. If I need to darken the shadows more, I'll swipe the tip with a waterbrush and apply more ink that way. Thanks for sharing Teoh.

I believe that this technique requires a lot of practice, difficult to control a soluble ink and especially the shadows on which all the drawing is based. Thanks for sharing Parka !

All inks are water soluble. “Waterproof” inks are waterproof only when COMPLETELY dried. I use my pentel ink brush a lot, and thin lines are waterproof in minutes, while I’ve had to wait at most a day for solid washes to waterproof. When the ink is freshly applied, the solvent is still liquid, therefore can be moved around by a brush (or your palm), and if the brush has water in it, it’ll dissolve and we get diluted ink washes. (Source, experience)

My favorite fountain pen is the TWSBI Eco. It can hold almost 2 ml. of ink. The TWSBI Eco is made in Taiwan and I'm wondering if the pen would cost less if it is purchased in Taiwan than it would be if purchased in the US. That's a very nice demonstration. I have used that technique in the past. It works great for those renderings which I do not want to add color to. I have a bottle of Diamine Ink that is not water resistant; so, I can use that. Most all of my other fountain pen inks are water resistant; some, more than others.

I currently have a Pilot Metropolitan with a chinese nib I got on amazon (since I bent the original nib.) Sometimes it draws smoothly, and sometimes it skips. I'm not sure if it's the nib causing trouble or the paper quality of my sketchbook. I was looking into the TWSBI Eco and I wanted to ask if it draws smoothly. Sometimes I find my fountain pen skipping if I draw too quickly. How is it?

@@whoooisv I have two Ecos with EF nibs and one Eco with a 1.1 mm stub nib. I use Noodler's American Eel black ink in one of my EF Ecos. I live in a dry climate; so, I don't see the drying issues with the Noodler's ink the way some do who live in more humid climates. My Eco seems to perform well no matter what kind of strokes I do. Peter Sheeler has a video on his RU-vid channel where he is actually using a TWSBI Eco for his sketchwork before he lays down watercolor. I don't remember the exact title of his video, though. But, if you go to his channel and watch his videos, you will probably come across it. I also have a Pilot Metropolitan which I have used for sketching; but, once I had to be hospitalized for an extended period, I have discovered that the Metropolitan has become rather problematic; and, I did not need to replace the nib. My Eco, though, was able to be used after 6 months of not being used. It has written well. There are many variables that seem to affect the ink flow out of a fountain pen. There is a wealth of information at gouletpens.com if you have the time to look at all of the links.

@@Donna_G Thanks so much for all the useful information! And for the recs. You're lucky to have multiple Ecos. I've been eyeing them for quite some time now, but my clumsiness is making me hesitant. I think I'll bite the bullet though, since my metropolitan has been driving me crazy.

Strange. My Vpen is not waterproof at all! It's what got my fountain pen obsession going as I had to search for appropriate ink and then pens to use it in.

How long do you let the ink dry before testing for water resistance? I sketch with a Pilot Varsity with medium nib and it isn't waterproof at all. I do not get the same results that you get with your "V" pen. Perhaps there is some difference between the Varsity and "V" pen? Thanks for your videos, really enjoy them.
@teohyc

How fast ink dries really depends on which ink you use. You will have to test them. Some watersoluble inks will be 100% soluble, while some will leave the initial line even if you try to wash the ink away.

Hi, I just passed on inktober because I missed a chunk of days after realising my ink was not waterproof! Now I think why did I do that! tbhI have done a lot of pen and ink work but never used wash at all. Ever. And always felt like my ink or pens were not good if they were at all soluble. Ok, so I am wrong, and have yet again learned something interesting. Sad about missing an opportunity, but glad you gave me a different one. Looking forward to seeing more work from you using this, and maybe using soluble pens in a single additional colour? As with your other recent video? How great to be able to go out with a couple of pens, and a brush pen and get a full on water effect.....

Is the India ink safe to use in my fountain pen ? Or is there a safer kind for fountain pens ?

India ink should not be used in fountain pens. Only use inks that mention specifically fountain pen use.
