Time Stamped Chapter links:
2:05 - our CNC machine - 8’x4’ with 8 tool changer
3:38 - example of a project using a CNC v grooving pattern, demonstrating the precision of CNC manufacturing.
4:42 - Freebird Gaming Table - drawn in detail in SketchUp and machined via Vectric
5:40 - the bulk of production is rectangular carcase parts; doors etc, and it makes sense to speed up this standard work as much as possible
6:26 - the Cabineo as our fixing of choice for rapid production with a flatbed CNC machine
8:27 - Presentation Agenda
9:26 - project overview. Introducing how machining data is embedded in the Sketchup model.
10:37 - the SketchUp model, and how I use my drawing template to isolate different views.
11:42 - basic methods of export from SketchUp to CNC: 2D DXF AND 3D DXF
13:08 - importing those DXFs into Vectric (with an overview of the Vectric work environment)
16:23 - alternative basic way of bringing geometry into Vectric: import SketchUp model directly (as long as it is a SketchUp 2019 file version)
19:05 - How we machined the curved base/ Vectric toolpathing overview easy for G-code export
20:24 - how this was made in real life
21:29 - bear in mind that CNC is just one tool among many and not always the most efficient option for certain tasks.
22:27 - the basic steps from Sketchup to Cnc: Sketchup Pro - Vectric - Gcode - CNC Machine
23:26 - faster more powerful exports to CNC using CabinetSense. Stating with a quick look at Component Options for internal cabinet parts.
25:09 - previewing machining drillpoints
27:06 - introducing the machining database (in Microsoft Access)
30:32 - how to export from CabinetSense to Vectric, including part names, orientations, machining data ready for automatic toolpathing, and edgebanding settings.
36:14 - showing how CabinetSense parts can be shaped with curved edge profiles or through- holes and rebates with native SketchUp tools and still correctly exported to Vectric for CNC machining. Including the use of Cabinetsense cutter components for clean circles.

I can now speak from experience and it has taken me a long to get to this point. I totally agree that the Cabinetsense and Sketchup work very well with each other. And I am now deep down the road of CNC. Transferring to Vetric is very easy. Still getting my head a round another of aspects but the process does work. I think you just have to get into, make mistakes, learn from them and don't be afraid to ask for help. The tunnel is long and I'm still in there but I can see light. I personally have followed Alastair from the beginning of his journey of sharing knowledge and I don't think I would be where I am today without him. I thought I was OK on Sketchup but Alastair is truly 10 steps up on the game all the time! I had never even heard of Cabinet Sense until Alastair had brought it to my attention and I don't think I would even know how to begin in CNC without this extension. Even if you don't have a CNC I would still strongly advise using it. You almost forgot how you use to draw In Sketchup! There will be a lot of swearing to start with and things to figure out but if I can do it, honestly any one can. Will be signing up for future lessons for sure!

Thanks for this comment Nic! I sometimes wonder how others get on with CabinetSense, especially you and Ady Webb who I know are both using it with the Yeti. We also use Polyboard software at Freebird and it's clear to me that any software of this sort has many layers of complexity and it can never be easy to get started. The power and possibilities of the software mean there are many different ways of going about things, and it takes a lot of trial and error and mistakes before you gain full understanding

I'm very interested to hear that Trevor, where are you based? Did you find Cabinetsense hard to master at first?

Hello Thanks first for the great presentation I just bought a new cnc nested routing cutting machine but had problems with making automation and precision work Should I go with cabinetsense from the start ? I am mostly making customised wardrobes and kitchens

Hi, whichever software you choose, it is a steep learning curve and takes a long time to set up. If you already use sketchup, cabinetsense is a great option. Another one to consider is polyboard (www.wooddesigner.org) which copes much better with angled projects. You could find me on Instagram @alastair_freebird or email me via my website www.freebirdinteriors.co.uk so I can give you a more detailed response.

I See you use routered MR for your doors, do you balance these to stop them warping/bowing?

For a while we did them as a double sided cnc operation, recessing 3mm equally both sides. But we had some problems with this method and switched to 2 piece. We find they stay straight if sent straight to spray booth. To be on the safe side I think it’s best to rebate the panel in such a way that it is central to the thickness of the door. Have you got any particular experience and advice on these methods?
