Ski Arlberg (St. Anton): Pros & Cons, and Epic Pass

Ski Arlberg is an Epic Pass partner resort that is the seventh largest ski and snowboard resort in the world. What are the pros and cons of Ski Arlberg?
1) CON: Unlike the Ikon Pass, the Epic Pass requires that you stay at designated hotels at certain partner resorts in Europe in order to use your Epic Pass there. Ski Arlberg is one of them. So make sure you read the restrictions so that you can use your Epic Pass. And you may want to consider whether you'll ultimately save money by booking your own accommodations, buying a pass on your own, and skipping Epic Pass.
2) CON: The layout of Ski Arlberg can be a bit confusing at first, and the different mountains may not be as connected as you assume. There are a few places, like Lech, where you have to walk a bit between the end of a slope and the chairlift, and the Auenfeldjet is an example of a gondola which doesn't take you up. It takes you across, to connect two different areas. The trail map can also be a bit confusing to read in the beginning.
3) PRO: Ski Arlberg has many "extreme" skiing features that are easily accessible from groomed slopes, which is great if you're skiing or snowboarding with people of different levels. The more advanced skiers and snowboarders can explore the extreme features and join right back up with everyone else. It's also perfect for those who are learning to handle more difficult terrain because they can take a quick shot at it and go right back to easier groomed slopes.
4) PRO: Accommodations. There are so many towns at Ski Arlberg that there countless options for accommodations. Lech and Zurs are the most centrally located, so if you want to stay in an area that makes it easy to get around all of Ski Arlberg's terrain, you may want to focus on them.
5) PRO: St. Anton's après-ski scene is extremely lively. If you want to socialize after your day on the mountain, or you're with people who prefer time in a lively town, you may want to stay in St. Anton. There are tons of bars, restaurants and clubs. You won't be disappointed!
6) PRO: If you don't speak German but do speak English, you shouldn't have much difficulty at Ski Arlberg. English seems to be spoken everywhere.
7) PRO: There are so many towns in Ski Arlberg, and the terrain is so spread out, that there seems to be an unlimited supply of mountain restaurants. Perfect for when it's sunny and you want to lounge outside while you eat.

Just a couple comments from a Canadian who has called St Anton home since ‘99. 1. Anything off a marked piste is at your own risk and can be uncontrolled avalanche areas. Beacons, appropriate gear and knowledge are a must if you want to ski off the piste. So your recommendations (particularly the section about Muggengrat)are dangerous. 2. Lech/Zürs may look more rustic but also host the majority of 4 and 5 star hotels so expect the most expensive accommodation and food/drinks. 3. Skiing back to St Anton from Zürs requires a download because the area below that particular gondola is a reserve for mountain goats and Ibex. Thanks for the vid!

Pro - the skiing there is fucking amazing. I agree 144 might be my favorite run i've ever skied on. There was an avalanche on it last year though i think.

Love all your resort reviews, filming and production quality is fantastic. And this one was timed nicely, before my trip from NY to St Anton in February!

We just got back from Arlberg last night and absolutely loved it. You make some great points, especially regarding the shitty trail map. That said, I can highly recommend Arlberg. We stayed in St Anton and had a blast. My wife and I are great skiers in our late 50s and my daughters are 21 and 25 and amazing skiers. I’ve skied all over Europe and think Arlberg is the best total experience. (Terrain, accommodations, apres, food and views.) All that said, we typically ski at Jackson, Whistler and Alta/Snowbird which are all much more difficult.

Great choice to stay at St. Anton. It seems like the best place to stay overall. Totally agree that you can find more difficult terrain at Jackson/Alta/Snowbird. Arlberg is such a great experience - hope the snow was good when you were there!

i think its a troubling thing in general, that these ski resorts get taken over by these massive american companies, since generally you spend a arm and a leg to be able to ski in american resorts compared to european ones.

Thanks so much! St. Anton is a great choice as the base for a trip to Arlberg. The most happening spot and pretty good access to the entirety of slopes. It's so spread out. If I go back, I'll stay at St. Anton again.

I am glad that you mentioned that the piste map of Ski Arlberg is hard to read! I have skied all over Europe but the Ski Arlberg piste map is definitely my least favourite. The "classical" design with piste overlapping / running parallel yet they are actually going to different directions at different altitudes makes it super hard to read, especially at the top of St Anton and Lech. They should just straighten out the lines like the tube map!

Would you say Zermatt or Arlberg were better experiences for skiing and village?
@kevinl8440
@kevinl8440 6 месяцев назад
Zermatt has better village, St Anton has better skiing for experts, advanced, and beginners but Zermatt better for intermediates
@SkiBoyNY.

I'd say St. Anton has a livelier apres-ski party scene, but Zermatt has a nicer town with more restaurant and shop options. For skiing, Zermatt is a lot easier to navigate overall, with Sunnegga having the most advanced terrain but otherwise pretty intermediate. Ski Arlberg is also good for intermediates, but does have more expert terrain scattered throughout.

I'm just over a third of the way through. Wouldn't it have made more sense to get the ski bus to each resort? That's what i did.
@SkiBoyNY.
@SkiBoyNY. 6 месяцев назад
I think the ski bus definitely would have made the transfer to some areas quicker, but I guess I just didn't want to time and wait for a bus. But with my way, I had less time at those other areas.

@SkiBoyNY. Ah, I see. The lift connections didn't exist yet when I was there and the Arlberg was experiencing the heaviest snowfall for either 50 or 100 years. 😮 Can't remember which.

@@SkiBoyNY. Yo, we couldn't get out of the airport at first... Then they put us on a transfer bus to a random small hotel somewhere along the route, where we had to stay overnight. Them the next morning a freaking air raid siren went off in the early hours... 😨 Imagine, you jump out of your sleep and your blood turns cold out of fear. Then I realised that they use it as a regular alarm or something and that it wasn't some kind of Danger Close ish! But yeah, the snow was great once we got there.

Real decent Expose' vids with pretty good insights. The poor snow in St.Anton was a reality check for me; as it made the road = runs look even more shallow and crowded. Most people just wanna skid around and have lunch. Andermatt looked great- especially with the Gemstock's cold snow possibilities. Are You Train-ing or Car-ing to get around the Euro-zone?? It was nice to see a decent skier on some SL skis -You; skiing everywhere. If the snow is cold and loose; Skinny Skis Rock. If I could make a suggestion: Cut the beginner/intermediate crap and take us Real Skiers skiing. I am not here primarily fer lunch. Please spend more seconds on Terrain and Routes. It is All about Local Knowledge. I've watched thousands of yootoob ski vids and less than 1% show Real Skiing for those who have a dozen or more 100+day seasons. Demo-Team or technical gurus; are only doing another damn demo or exercise. Phoaugh! I want vids about rippin' with the boys -and I don't mean a huck-fest or park-rats.

Thanks for the great, constructive comment! Totally agree about the "road" back down to St. Anton. End of day, totally congested. I was car-ing it because I went from Switzerland to Austria to Italy. Too impractical if you try to do the whole thing by train once you're outside of Switzerland. Definitely want to make some more "extreme" terrain vids. Will hopefully get some in this season - really hoping that a planned heliskiing day in Alaska will materialize! The challenge is always that it's more difficult to get good footage when filming yourself on that type of terrain because it's harder to keep the camera steady. But I've resigned myself to using the helmet cam, which makes skiing easier, so we'll see how this season goes.
