Snowmobile season has finally arrived!!!! Time to get some vintage sleds in the powder! The first project to kick off the 2022 season is this wonderful original 1968 Skidoo Super Olympique (or Olympic ... lol) with the 370 Rotax opposed twin cylinder engine. That's right folks, a Boxster engine! Purchased a few years back and never ran, Matt dives into this project head first to access what it will take to get this old survivor back on the snow. Spoiler alert, engine and track damage was detected! If you like old snowmobiles, old motors or wrenching on old vintage iron, you will enjoy this ski-doo video!
If you enjoy mechanics and working on old engines, this Rotax 368cc is a fun one. Made only in 1967, 1968 and 1969, skidoo offered these super 370 opposed engines in Olympique and Alpine models. They put out 18.5 hp at 5000 rpm. They have a single Tillotson carb mounted on the rear cylinder. This particular example, seems to have had a little water damage, but hopefully can be brought back to life. Stay tuned!

The 68 Ski-Doo would ride over deep snow. Travel right past the Cat & Polaris sleds with cleated tracks stuck. I did it alot. I liked turning around and riding past again. I modified the exhaust to dual with round lawn tractor mufflers. It sounded really good.

The sound of that clutch when the engine stalls triggers so many bad memories of my old sleds . Fix, ride, tow, repeat......

Those opposeds are a neat engine, but many were damaged or ruined by water. Once the airbox came off the mess with the carb they then sat out un covered and got water in them. Pistons and cylinders are from what I understand hard to come by. I had a 370 as a teenager, ran like a scalded dog compared to my 12 horse Olympic when it ran. Probably needed crank and case re sealing. I didn't have the tools nor the skills in the day. I now have a 370 chassis running a '67 10 1/2 horse engine I pulled off a machine I parted out when I was about 14. I have a couple vids on my channel with it in them.

My dad bought his new. Allways had problems with the front cylinder often not running. It was a comon issue.

I had the same piece of junk back in the mid 70s when I was a kid that I bought and it also had a bad track and stripped spark plug hole.. got the head helicoiled at napa and the plug blew out again as soon as I started it.. Anyway they installed the helicoil backwards so I fixed that myself got it running and the track started coming apart.. Ran ok but then I found a piston was cracked and rings were broke in back cylinder and nobody carried that and I was told parts weren't available because the machine was to old even though at that point it was only about 7 yrs old .. Well threw it back together and ran it as is cracked piston fitted with Briggs and Stratton lawn mower engine piston rings with missing track chunks for a few years then finally sold it to someone with an identical unit and moved on .. That junker ran damn good with Briggs lawn mower rings and was quite the talk of the farming neighborhood... Probably easy today with Internet to get any parts it needs but back then every part seemed to be obsolete.. Boy things sure have changed and this video brought back some silly memories of that machine ... Lol

Cool video My dad bought one of these new it was the fastest machine around that year in Dauphin MB. As a 9 year old I got in lots of trouble with it. But starting was a bugger for my skinny little arms. lol

That cylinder head would come off relatively easy. I think. And O’Reillys, autozone… Princess auto? In Canada… Don’t know your stores. But they sell a spark plug thread insert kit. It has, the tap. The insert tool, and several inserts. They really work slick. I did a couple of Volkswagen heads. Aluminum. And they worked perfectly. I think I paid $28 for this? Maybe not more than that. But it was well worth the price. And once you have the tools. You can just buy the inserts. Cool old sled. I didn’t know that Rotax made a opposed twin. I know that Evinrude used OMC opposed twins. But I didn’t know that Rotax made one.

I’m looking to pick one of these super olympiques up with the 370. Located it today… sadly the motors stuck but I have also located another 370 to go in it!
