100K of human powered ascending over the month of February has ended with a in depth look at the 2020/2021 K2 Wayback 106 and the Dynafit Superlight 150 binding.
The ski: I didn't get into the technical details of the ski, because anyone can find that on K2s website. I probably should have talked about the camber profile and sidecut more. The former is really nuanced and well done. Just enough camber under foot to help with edge bite, while still having plenty of subtle early rise to the tip and tail to help the ski plane (but not so much it adds drag). The sidecut profile is somewhat normal, but has enough taper to keep the tip and tail from being hooky. I touch on the mount point a bit in the review, and I'd like to see a different variant of this ski with a more forward "McConkey Turn Friendly" mount point.
The Binding: A good binding should be invisible. At 150 grams per foot, this one damn near was invisible. It did its job admirably, and it probably deserves its own review. At 200lbs I never came out of the ski, but I also know this binding is not going to protect my knees like a traditional alpine binding (not expecting it to). For touring, I am very happy with this, and it makes me question why my other pin bindings are two to three times the weight of this one.
If you have questions, please ask. I'm THRILLED with this setup.
Ski: 9/10 (would like a more forward mount, otherwise perfect)
Binding: 8/10 (heel riser won't stay put, plus its not tall enough, otherwise perfect)
