100K of human powered ascending over the month of February has ended with a in depth look at the 2020/2021 K2 Wayback 106 and the Dynafit Superlight 150 binding.
The ski: I didn't get into the technical details of the ski, because anyone can find that on K2s website. I probably should have talked about the camber profile and sidecut more. The former is really nuanced and well done. Just enough camber under foot to help with edge bite, while still having plenty of subtle early rise to the tip and tail to help the ski plane (but not so much it adds drag). The sidecut profile is somewhat normal, but has enough taper to keep the tip and tail from being hooky. I touch on the mount point a bit in the review, and I'd like to see a different variant of this ski with a more forward "McConkey Turn Friendly" mount point.
The Binding: A good binding should be invisible. At 150 grams per foot, this one damn near was invisible. It did its job admirably, and it probably deserves its own review. At 200lbs I never came out of the ski, but I also know this binding is not going to protect my knees like a traditional alpine binding (not expecting it to). For touring, I am very happy with this, and it makes me question why my other pin bindings are two to three times the weight of this one.
If you have questions, please ask. I'm THRILLED with this setup.
Ski: 9/10 (would like a more forward mount, otherwise perfect)
Binding: 8/10 (heel riser won't stay put, plus its not tall enough, otherwise perfect)

Update here: I moved the mount +3 and I like the ski significantly more. I did happen to break one of the toe pieces, dynafit promptly warrantied. Still not happy with the climbing bails. Would 100% buy this setup again.

I just got this ski. I should ask the shop to mount +3?

@@hupoI'm a little weird - I'd say 1.5-2 is a better spot for most people.

I heard nothing of what I actually came here for; was just genuinely smiling and laughing all the way watching you ski deep powder haha! Thank you for the review though; the ski is getting the job done.

You look like you have solid technical training in skiing. No? In any case, it’s great to see a backcountry skier who doesn’t have anything weird going on.

Hey dude! Thanks for the compliment. Though I didn't ski in any Olympic development program, I was around those kids a lot and it transferred pretty well. I competed as a mogul skier for a brief amount of time, then big mountain skier. Moved to Jackson, got hurt which kinda put an end to my "send it big" era, but still ski a ton. It also helps that my three best friends are all Freeride World Tour winners.

Super video. I got the exact same setup, except i mounted the Dynafit ST Rotation. I use it for freetouring. But for big pow days (like we got em now in austria) this ski lacks a bit of pop that would give more floatation and agility in deep conditions. And, my Wayback 88 isn't that far behind in pow conditions. Why don't u like the Maestrale RS? But with wider feet not so many options anyways :-)

@JeffreyJim09 Год назад
Hey Mario. I am sorry it took me so long to reply to this. The Maestrale I should do a review on in and of itself. Maybe that'll be my Friday activity ;) Here are my two main thoughts as to why I don't love it. 1) Not enough forward lean. The boot always "stands me up". Other skiers have similar thoughts. 2) I break them. I've broken 2 (or 3?) lowers.

Still enjoying this binding? Thinking of this binding or the Plum Oazo 8 for a mid 100mm-110mm waist ski. Lots of light bindings to choose from. Would like to be in that 150-250gram per binding range. Love the snow dog footage

Hey. Thanks for the great Review :) I am really thinking of buying the exact same setup and have one question: on which Position did you Mount the binding? (Centeral, like K2s proposal, etc) Would be great to hear
@JeffreyJim09

I went on the line. I wish I went 1-2CM forward, but I do like a more "modern" mount.

I run a 179 with shift bindings. Amazing setup. I ski 70% alpine 30% touring. Would recommend. Perf setup for some east coast touring/all mountain.

Rad video dude - how did this end up performing later on with spring conditions, corn etc.? I know you said you got into it a little bit, but curious if you had any more to add as you got into late season. Looking to get an AT set up, and I think the Wayback 106 has just about everything I'm looking for. Cheers!

I’m 185 cm (6’1) 80kg (175lbs) and undecided between 179 and 186. I will be skiing this 90% in the backcountry. Which size do you recommend? Would you recommend mounting a tad forward even on the 179? Great video, thx!
@JeffreyJim09
@JeffreyJim09 Год назад
You'd likely fit the 186 perfectly. Go forward a bit on the mount and it'll be awesome. I'm 30 pounds heavier than you and often (often) wishing I had more...

@@JeffreyJim09 I'm 6', 165lbs and currently ski on a Rossignol Sender Ti 186cm with a Dynafit Rotation 12 which I'm planning to replace with something lighter. Would you recommend the 179 or 186? What makes it ski long?
@Sk8ter-Dad
@Sk8ter-Dad Год назад
Hey I'm pretty interested in this ski. I'm about 6ft 150lbs do you think I should go with the 186cm length or the 179? I have skied the Salomon QST 106 in a 181cm and I currently own Line Visions in the 183cm. Thinking since this ski is such a traditional mount I could maybe get away with the 179.
@JeffreyJim09
@JeffreyJim09 Год назад
You'd be fine in a 179 - they actually ski long!
@cortex4ever

Did you get to try it in a hard icy piste at all? Very curious on how bad that was... or if it is kind of survivable? Because a lot of times I need to take the piste down the last parts of a slope to get to the lift again. (My current powder skiis (118 mm) are kind of horrible in that respect and also heavy to skin with)
@JeffreyJim09
@JeffreyJim09 10 месяцев назад
I did, I can handle them but I would not make this an in bounds ski personally; simply too light.
@cortex4ever
@cortex4ever 10 месяцев назад
@@JeffreyJim09 Thanks for answering. My main reason for looking at these skis is that I want a pretty light ski for both skitouring (for powder-riding with or without a kite) and also speedriding. My current powder-skis are a tad too heavy for speedriding and gives a lot of unwanted momentum when flying aggressivly. So these ones probably would fit in pretty well. As long as they are survivable in an icy piste. 😆

Kind of. I bent the spring so it "grabs" better but it never was like is should be. Sort of forgot about it till you posted this comment!
