The Sammy C Project Available on Itunes: radi.al/TheSamm...
Teton Gravity Research and 8-time X Games medalist and 3-time Real Ski Champion, Sammy Carlson, introduce The Sammy C Project. The Sammy C Project hopes to inspire those even beyond the realm of snow to go after their dreams with tenacity.
Sammy Carlson, places himself in the record books as the first skier to hit a “ski-flying” long jump with freestyle intent. Carlson not only spun himself from the lip of a jump designed to send skiers upwards of 500 feet, but began several of many descents into the jump switch.
Built in 1970, the ski jump, known as Copper Peak, is the largest ski jump in the Western Hemisphere. Located on Michigan’s upper peninsula and along the shores of Lake Superior, the 24 story, 300-ton steel structure is named for the mineral deposits unearthed during its construction (a 140-pound copper nugget was discovered near the present-day judge’s stand). The ramp itself claims 364-feet of vertical drop and a 35-degree in-run, providing for jumps with distance records stretching over 500 feet.
“When we showed up it was a ghost ramp. It not been hit in twenty years,” declares Carlson. “The people helping me from the community where just as committed as I was to hitting the ramp. It was true team effort.”
The film shares nearly two years of unthinkable freestyle skiing progression, with features, locations and cinematography to rival the groundbreaking segment released today. “The jump is truly enormous,” says TGR co-founder Steve Jones. “Hitting a gap this big in general takes significant confidence and skill, not to mention spinning from its lip or dropping in switch. Sammy is unbeatable when it comes to skiing like this.”

@JoshBlooming
@JoshBlooming 7 лет назад
The STRUCTURE is 260 feet or so above the ground it sits on. If you are on the top and the chain link fence fails, you fall 260 feet to the ground below. The actual jump height is on the small side for ski flying. The difference is that most of the big jumps are built into the side of a mountain... meaning if you fall from the top of it, you drop only 5 to 10 feet before you hit the ground. I have been at the top of Copper Peak. I have walked the last 6 stories from the top of the elevator to the top of the jump... looking down through grated, see through stairs with the only protection from falling of being rotten plywood and chain link fence. Until you make that walk yourself, please reserve any doubts about what it is like. The place is AWESOME!

This isn’t Pine Mountain? Pine in Iron mountain is the 2nd Tallest man made ski jump in the world. Only to be surpassed by China in 2007. Where is it that the super bowl of ski jumping is held again? Oh yea. The Continental Cup is held at Pine Mountain, because it’s the biggest!!

Does somebody feel strange why young people risk their short life for silly things like this? I'm the onlyone here? I mean I've been skiing since my 9th birthday and don't have any problems carving any mountain, but why I'm supposed to risk my entire skiing-life for a blink on youtube,

OMG YES...atop that monstrosity...I can imagine...I recall back in the day we had a pretty big jump at Hiawatha Ski Hill in Sault Ontario that closed in 75. So seeing this guy relive a dream I had and in area that is close to me made me very happy! Also it's rare to see Superior winds calm so that's another aspect to jumping that beast!

Mr Supercynsky got it right. Sammy got lots of sisu, but would have had even more if that failed landing wouldn't have been his last jump. Altogether, amazing performance from this daredevil!

Only in the Midwest would they need to build a structural ramp because they don't even have hills high enough for skiing

As a downhiller , and even at this slower speed, I would have at least put up a safety snow fence using bamboo poles and netting to prevent kissing those steel rods on both sides of the landing! No risk assessment, dudes lucky it wasnt his final days on skiis.

In a world where everything has been discovered, everything has been done and the only frontiers where you can break into uncharted territory is left to elite scientists in research or elite athletes.. people do stupid things in order to feel like they've accomplished something.

People from that region of the world, especially from the upper peninsula of Michigan are mostly of Finnish descent and many still speak Finnish, hence the Yooper(UPer) accent or Yoopanese you hear from the guy saying how big of a sack he has.
