The early expierience of the game for the new player have been greatly improvement in the last weekend, you should go try it now. Progress is a lot faster with these quests, at the end of the day you can go and pvp some players ;>
You lose usually 1 of your equipmement + some of inventory when you die, unless some higher level kills you then you drop much less. Progress is saved on your account.
