+Black Orthodox Christian Girl - I am indeed an Orthodox Christian! I was received into the Church back in October 2009. I used to be agnostic/Pentecostal for most of my life prior to becoming Orthodox :)
The word "Icon" is a Greek word and translates as "image". For the icon to have the power of guidance, defense, etc. it must be sanctified with the prayer of the Orthodox priest. There are also wizard icons with charms on them. The icon must be purchased only from the monastery or church and not be recieved as gift. The word "grace" translates as "the right given by Jesus Christ to priests to offer prayers of release, baptism, communion, etc.", grace can only have the priest and not a icon or anyone else.
Interesting process but I did not feel the sense of reverence in the writing of the icon (and I am an Orthodox Christian.) It seemed like a cold production. Mozart didn't help.
