After 53 episodes of the full grain podcast, I am just beginning to understand the depth and nuance of most of what Skip is saying. What a great video to look back on, especially as Cypress is getting more popular.

Im in my first year of leatherworking so this was really interesting, confusing, and helpful. I've only ever heard of latigo being 10+ oz for armour, and it's almost as stiff as metal sheeting, and hardly takes wet forming at all. Which means it's incredibly strong, hence it's use in armour. So seeing a bag or wallets or belts made with latigo is mind boggling to me. I've only used plain vegtan so far from Tandy, so the lack of hard rules for all these bespoke types of leather is horrifying but also really cool. Thanks for making this video, now I at least know to ask what type of latigo I'm looking at for when I make my plate armour!

Hey! You guys are awesome! I like this interview a lot. He did hint at a question I may have had. I thought going Chromexcel (British Tan) would have been safer for dress shoes as it offers better rain protection and less likely to get strange from moisture. Would I have been better off with veg tan? I don't exactly need the natural patina, I just wanted something that stays nice and consistent. But British Tan Chromexcel might not be the answer?

In my experience a full veg leather will absorb moisture more quickly than a chrome tan or a combo tanned leather. The moisture won't affect the durability and it will dry out. If you are looking for more consistent I think a Latigo is more flat and even in color and it has a slightly more dressy look to my eye. That's also not to say that the British Tan CXL you are referencing can't be dressed up. I wore a pair of CXL boots for my wedding and I thought that they looked killer. The CXL leather has a pullup and a depth in color that may not be as consistent as you are hoping for. CXL is water RESISTANT (the water will roll off of it) but it is not waterproof. Not sure if this helps but let me know and I can try to clarify anything

@@AshlandLeather I would love to find a good boot maker that uses Latigo. I hope Nicks Boots takes up that mantle soon! I will shoot them a request to consider it in the future.

Do you still do fringe or did you let it die as it should have in the '70s

It's all about that cherry raisin color for me, a red like that is hard to find in anything, even cosmetics.

This isn't a criticism, but to make things seem more professional, you should look at the camera setup and angles for other interviews. You're both looking toward camera right, which is very disorienting for the viewer. Also, the low angle shot of you feels VERY intrusive and uncomfortable. Again, not a criticism, but I assume you want this channel to look as professional as you can. Anyway, great content and best of luck!
